The Moog MF-104M Analog Delay is an all-analog delay pedal built by Moog as part of its Moogerfooger line, a range of effects boxes based on Moog synthesizer functions. It uses the same vintage analog bucket-brigade delay (BBD) chips as the original MF-104, which Bob Moog designed back in 2000, and it delivers up to 800 milliseconds of delay time with a six-waveform modulation section, tap tempo, spillover mode and full MIDI control12.

The MF-104M was introduced in 2012 as the mass-production successor to the MF-104 and MF-104Z, sold for a limited time at $699321. It is no longer in regular production: Moog ran out of the vintage BBD chips the circuit needs, suspending production in 2015, and a short 2019 batch built from a newly discovered cache of chips was sold only from Moog's store in Asheville, North Carolina4256. That scarcity has pushed prices on the secondhand market sharply upward4.

The controls

The top panel splits into a delay side and a modulation side. Time and Feedback are the main delay controls, both with wide ranges, and a Short/Long switch toggles the delay time between 40 to 400 ms and 80 to 800 ms modes14. Down the middle sit the Drive, Output Level and Mix controls1.

ControlWhat it does
TimeDelay time, 40 to 800 ms range4
Short/Long switchToggles between short (40 to 400 ms) and long (80 to 800 ms) delay modes1
FeedbackSets the number of repeats4
DriveAdds gain, from -7 to +28 dB; can add grit or low-fi tones in the manner of tape echo, and works as a preamp on its own with the effect controls at zero1
Output LevelOverall output volume4
MixBlends dry and wet signal1
AmountControls the overall amount of LFO modulation of the delay time4
LFO waveform selectorSix waveforms: sine, triangle, square, saw, reverse saw, and sample and hold1
Tap TempoAssignable to delay time or LFO rate by holding the switch; the Time or Rate LED flashes green to show the assignment4

The Drive control deserves a note of its own. Premier Guitar's reviewer found the -7 to +28 dB range "really handy," describing its ability to dirty up a signal like a tape echo, and noting that with the effect controls at zero it functions as a standalone preamp1.

The modulation section is what separates the MF-104M from a plain analog delay. Six LFO waveforms, including sample and hold, modulate the delay time for chorus, vibrato and more experimental wobble, and the tap tempo switch doubles as a rate switch for the modulation when pressed and held14.

Power and connections

The MF-104M runs on a +9V DC center positive barrel power adaptor, which Moog included in the box, and it needs 400mA minimum43.

The center positive polarity is the opposite of most modern 9V pedals, which are center negative, and the 400mA draw rules out a battery. Check any power supply's polarity and current rating before plugging in.

The rear panel carries the audio and control connections4:

  • Audio In: 1/4" TS jack accepting any instrument level to line level signal4
  • Mix Out: 1/4" TS jack with adjustable output level for instrument or line level output4
  • Delay Out: 1/4" TS jack supplying wet-only output4
  • Feedback Insert: 1/4" TRS jack for inserting other effects into the delay's feedback loop, at line level4
  • Expression/CV jacks: Feedback, Time, LFO Rate, Mix and LFO Amount, all 1/4" TRS jacks accepting Moog EP-2 or equivalent expression pedals, or 0 to 5V DC control voltages4
  • MIDI In: 5-pin DIN input for controlling the MF-104M via MIDI4

Spillover mode is engaged by pressing and holding the bypass switch: with it active, delays trail off and decay naturally after the effect is switched off, rather than stopping cold, and each mode is shown by a different color LED14.

Where it came from

The MF-104M's story is really a story about chips. Bob Moog originally designed the MF-104 Analog Delay in 2000, an authentic analog delay with a range of 40 milliseconds to 0.8 seconds, used by players including Stereolab and Air72. It was discontinued in 20012. In 2012 Moog introduced the MF-104M for mass production, adding the six-waveform LFO, spillover mode, tap tempo, MIDI and CV/expression control32.

The pedal's dependence on vintage bucket-brigade chips then caught up with it. Moog announced in 2015 that it had depleted its supply of the chips used in its delay models and would not make any more, which shot the MF-104M's price "up into the stratosphere, where it still remains, with no signs of slowing down," as Pedal of the Day put it4. In 2019, a recently discovered cache of vintage BBD chips allowed Moog to build a short run again, hand built at its factory in Asheville, NC, but sold only on-site at The Moog Store56.

What reviewers said

Reviewers have been consistent in rating the MF-104M among the best analog delays made. Premier Guitar's review called it "One of the finest analog delays on the market," crediting the modulation section and tweakability with "limitless tonal possibilities"1. On its sound, the same reviewer found the echoes "rich, organic, and not at all harsh," and praised the build: "The hardwood sides and high-quality switchwork are all classically Moog"1.

"the fact that it is also considered one of the finest delays ever made doesn't hurt its reputation, either"
Mike B, Pedal of the Day4

Pedal of the Day's 2019 review of the Vongon VF-104 controller went further still, describing the MF-104M as "an analog delay considered by many to be the finest ever created"8.

Questions

Why did Moog stop making the MF-104M?

The pedal depends on vintage analog bucket-brigade delay (BBD) chips, and Moog ran out of them. Production was suspended in 2015 when the chips could no longer be sourced, and a small 2019 batch was only possible because a cache of the old chips turned up. That scarcity is also what pushed secondhand prices sharply upward.

Does the Moog MF-104M have tap tempo?

Yes. The tap tempo switch can be assigned to delay time or to LFO rate by holding it down, and the Time or Rate LED flashes green to show which one it is controlling. Premier Guitar's reviewer noted that many players now consider tap tempo indispensable for syncing effects on the fly.

How long is the delay time on the MF-104M?

The Time control covers a range of 40 to 800 milliseconds of analog delay time. A Short/Long switch toggles between two modes: short, covering 40 to 400 ms, and long, covering 80 to 800 ms. Gearnews described the pedal as offering 800+ milliseconds of delay.

Is the Behringer BM-14M a copy of the MF-104M?

Behringer announced the BM-14M in September 2025 as a new analog delay pedal recreating the Moog Moogerfooger MF-104M, with added features including a MIDI input. It is a separate product from a different maker, not a Moog release.

What does spillover mode do on the MF-104M?

Press and hold the bypass switch for about a second to engage or disengage spillover mode. With it on, your delays trail off and decay naturally after you turn the effect off, instead of stopping cold. Each mode is indicated by a different color LED.

Can the MF-104M be controlled by MIDI?

Yes. The pedal has a 5-pin DIN MIDI In jack for full MIDI control, and it can sync to MIDI Clock. The Vongon VF-104, a dedicated MIDI controller reviewed by Pedal of the Day in 2019, adds nine presets across three banks to the MF-104M.
