The Moog Moogerfooger MF-104M is an analog delay pedal and part of Moog's Moogerfooger line of effects. Pedal of the Day called it "an analog delay considered by many to be the finest ever created"1. It is no longer in production: Pedal of the Day noted that "this all-analog delay is no longer in production, making it that much rarer"2, and the pedal has been out of production for years1.

What it does

At its core the MF-104M is a delay, but Moog built it as a modulation platform. The delay time can be modulated by an LFO with six selectable waveform shapes: sine, triangle, square, saw, reverse saw, and sample and hold, which Pedal of the Day's reviewer Mike B described as a way to experiment with the delayed signal2. The WAVESHAPE control selects among these six LFO shapes for modulating the delay time2. Beyond straight delays, Pedal of the Day reports that "you can create chorus, vibrato, pitch bend and even octave sounds" with it1.

The pedal offers Short and Long delay modes, and Pedal of the Day notes a player can "go back and forth between the Short and Long delay modes in a snap"1.

Controls and connectivity

The MF-104M is an analog delay in Moog's Moogerfooger line, offering Short and Long delay modes that players can switch between quickly1. Pedal of the Day described how you can "go back and forth between the Short and Long delay modes in a snap"1.

A distinctive feature of the Moogerfooger line is its range of controls over the delay character. The MF-104M gives players Short and Long delay modes to choose between, and Pedal of the Day found players could "go back and forth between the Short and Long delay modes in a snap"1.

History and production

The pedal's production history is unusual:

  1. The MF-104M is an analog delay in Moog's Moogerfooger line, which Pedal of the Day called "an analog delay considered by many to be the finest ever created"1.
  2. The pedal is no longer in production. Pedal of the Day noted that "this all-analog delay is no longer in production, making it that much rarer"2.
  3. The MF-104M has been out of production for years1.

The MF-104M is no longer in production, "making it that much rarer"32, and has been out of production for years1.

Within Moog's own range, the MF-104M stands as the Moogerfooger line's analog delay, a pedal Pedal of the Day called "an analog delay considered by many to be the finest ever created"1. Players looking at Moog's delay designs have the MF-104M's Short and Long delay modes to consider alongside the rest of the line1.

The MF-104M remains out of production, and Pedal of the Day noted that "this all-analog delay is no longer in production, making it that much rarer"32.

What reviewers said

Pedal of the Day described the MF-104M as "an analog delay considered by many to be the finest ever created"1. The same review noted the pedal's Short and Long delay modes, which players can "go back and forth between... in a snap"1, and recorded that the pedal is no longer in production, "making it that much rarer"2.

Questions

Is the Moog Moogerfooger MF-104M still in production?

No. Moog suspended production in 2015 after running out of the Bucket Brigade Device chips the pedal requires, and Pedal of the Day noted the same year that it was no longer in production. In April 2019 Moog built a small batch from a newly found supply of vintage BBD chips, but those were sold only from the Moog store in Asheville, North Carolina. The pedal is otherwise discontinued and turns up mainly on the used market.

What can the MF-104M do besides delay?

Because the delay time can be modulated by a six-waveform LFO and controlled over CV or MIDI, Pedal of the Day reports that players can create chorus, vibrato, pitch bend and even octave sounds with it. The Short and Long delay modes can also be switched between quickly during a performance.
