The Mr. Black DoubleTracker Stereo is a stereo double-tracking pedal that creates a second guitar track alongside your own. Double tracking is a recording technique from the 1950s in which a part was recorded twice and the two nearly identical takes were overlaid, thickening the sound and widening its depth. The DoubleTracker Stereo does that in real time on a pedalboard: it generates a second voice, detuned by up to half a semitone and delayed by 3ms to 178ms on the primary/left channel, and blends it with your dry signal1.

Mr. Black describes the result as sitting near familiar territory without being either of its neighbors: "It's almost like chorus, almost like slap-back, and yet at the same time: its neither of those effects, nor a combination of them"1. The design is a Jack Deville original, built as an analog pedal12.

Where it came from

The DoubleTracker Stereo is a Jack Deville original design for Mr. Black1. It offers an expanded doubled-signal delay on the primary/left channel, ranging from 3ms to 178ms1.

The pedal's manual is published by Mr. Black and covers its controls and operation1.

The controls: SYNC and COMP modes, mix and preset

The pedal has two modes of operation, SYNC and COMP, shown by LED color1.

ModeLED colorWhat it does
SYNCRedThe 2nd voices are matched in tune with the original
COMPGreenAs one voice raises in pitch, the other lowers, and vice versa

In COMP mode, Mr. Black says the stereo field widens dramatically, a direct result of the Haas Effect, the phenomenon where a sound arriving at each ear at slightly different times is perceived as spacious rather than as two separate sounds. With a modest or extreme Spread setting, the maker describes the sound as "Ampitheatric. Almost like an instant arena"1.

Three controls set the intensity, latency and variance of the second track, and there is a full, lossless wet/dry mix control that can run 100% wet1. RockBoard's PedalPedia listing confirms the wet/dry mix and the short delay times of 3 ms to 178 ms2.

One on-board preset is available: dial in your settings, press the SAVE button once, and the Preset LED blinks three times to confirm the preset is stored. The PRESET footswitch toggles between your live settings and the saved preset1.

Power and connections

The DoubleTracker Stereo runs on standard 9VDC pedal power through a 2.1mm negative center-pin jack, drawing about 73mA. Mr. Black recommends a regulated supply rated over 100mA, so plan for it on an isolated output rather than sharing a low-current daisy chain. Power is not included1.

Routing is flexible across the two inputs and two outputs1:

  • Mono-In/Mono-Out: one input, one output
  • Mono-In/Stereo-Out: one input, both outputs
  • Discrete True-Stereo-In/True-Stereo-Out: both inputs and both outputs, with the two channels kept separate

An EXP jack takes an external expression pedal wired Tip to Wiper, Ring to High, Sleeve to Ground. Controls turned to the "EXP." marker on the panel are assigned to expression pedal duties1.

B-Stock units carry the standard 1-year Mr. Black Warranty and use the same internal components as a standard pedal, but they have minor cosmetic defects and all B-Stock sales are final, with no returns, exchanges, or refunds1. The Black LTD. Double Tracker listing states the same all-sales-final policy3.

Questions

Is the Mr. Black DoubleTracker Stereo true bypass?

No. Mr. Black lists the DoubleTracker Stereo as buffered bypass. When the pedal is off, your signal passes through its buffer rather than a true-bypass switch. The pedal runs two discrete, isolated signal paths for its primary/left and secondary/right channels.

Can the DoubleTracker Stereo run mono in and stereo out?

Yes. Mr. Black specifies three routing configurations: Mono-In/Mono-Out, Mono-In/Stereo-Out, and Discrete True-Stereo-In/True-Stereo-Out. The pedal has a Primary Input and Secondary Input plus a Primary Output and Secondary Output, so you can feed one input and take two outputs.

What is the difference between the DoubleTracker and the DoubleTracker Stereo?

The original compact DoubleTracker, released in 2023, was a mono pedal. The DoubleTracker Stereo adds True-Stereo Double Tracking with two discrete, isolated signal paths, an expanded doubled-signal delay range of 3ms to 178ms on the primary/left channel, and detuning of the doubled track by up to half a semitone.

What expression pedal works with the DoubleTracker Stereo?

The pedal has an EXP jack for an external expression pedal. Mr. Black gives the wiring as Tip to Wiper, Ring to High, and Sleeve to Ground. Any expression pedal following that wiring can be used, and controls turned to the EXP marker on the panel are assigned to expression pedal duties.

Are Mr. Black B-Stock pedals covered by warranty?

Yes. Mr. Black states that B-Stock units carry the standard 1-year Mr. Black Warranty. B-Stock units have minor cosmetic defects but the internal components are the same as a standard pedal. B-Stock sales are final, with no returns, exchanges, or refunds.
