The NUX Mini SCF is a mini modulation pedal from NUX that packs three effects into one small box: chorus, pitch modulation and flanger. It is a digital tribute to the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger, a pedal NUX calls "one of the best modulation pedals ever made since 1976"1. Where the original was an analog bucket brigade design, the Mini SCF uses NUX's DSP with an analog dry signal, and it adds things the original never had: stereo over a single TRS cable, Smart Tap Tempo and switchable true or buffer bypass1.

The three modes cover the same ground as the original SCF. Chorus mode mixes multiple delayed signals with the original signal for what NUX describes as a soft, wide modulation effect. P.M. mode blends chorus with pitch vibrato for a lighter chorus sound. FLG mode is a flanger, where the signal can be regenerated, like adding feedback on a delay, for a more distinctive effect1.

Where it comes from: the TC Electronic SCF

The original SCF is an analog pedal, and the modern reissues keep that circuit: Pedal of the Day's review of the SCF Gold Stereo Chorus Flanger says it "replicates its predecessor's analog modulation effects to a T"2. The Mini SCF takes a different route: rather than a bucket brigade chip, NUX's engineers "had to develop an algorithm that mimics the principles of BBD chips, the key component of Analog Chorus"1. Delicious Audio's review identifies it as a stereo DSP-based take on the TC design3.

Controls and how it works

The Mini SCF keeps the original's control layout in miniature: Delicious Audio's review lists "knobs for Speed, Width, and Intensity" alongside the mode selector3. Speed sets how fast the modulation cycles; Width sets how deep it sweeps; Intensity sets the character of the effect, and in pitch modulation mode it works as a blend between chorus and vibrato, the same behavior the original SCF's Intensity control had in that mode3.

The single smart footswitch does double duty. It engages and bypasses the pedal, and it also handles tap tempo, so you can tap modulation speed in time with the music3. NUX calls this Smart Tap Tempo1.

Bypass mode is chosen at boot-up, not with a switch. Hold the footswitch while powering the pedal on: the footswitch indicator flashes green for Buffer-bypass (Trails) and red for True-bypass1.

Stereo, bypass and power

Two features separate the Mini SCF from most mini pedals. First, it supports stereo input and output over a single 1/4" TRS cable, with a Stereo mode to select in the pedal1. Second, it offers both true bypass and buffer bypass with trails, so you can keep modulation tails ringing after you disengage it, or keep the signal path fully passive when the pedal is off1.

Delicious Audio's reviewer, Paolo De Gregorio, admitted he initially overlooked NUX's mini pedals3:

"They seemed like the rehashing of Mooer models from the early ’10s. Then I realized something: these little babies are stereo!"3

He also found the mini SCF offers wider dynamic range than expected, and noted the USB connection allows for firmware updates3. NUX lists firmware version 1.0 for the pedal1.

Power is 9V DC with a negative tip, using the optional NUX ACD-008 adapter, with a current draw of less than 100mA1. That draw rules out battery power and means it should share a well-regulated isolated supply rather than a cheap daisy chain.

Within NUX's own range, the Mini SCF sits alongside other mini modulation pedals like the NUX Voodoo Vibe, a stereo mini Uni-Vibe and chorus pedal, and larger multi-modulation pedals like the NUX MOD Core DELUXE. Players who want the original analog circuit rather than a digital interpretation can look at the TC Electronic reissues, including the SCF Gold SE456.

What reviewers said

Published coverage of the Mini SCF itself is limited to Delicious Audio's 2022 review, which added the pedal to its best chorus pedals coverage3. The reviewer's overall point was that stereo in a mini enclosure at this price is the pedal's real story, and that the smart footswitch doubling as tap tempo and the USB firmware connection round out a feature set unusual for the size3.

The pedal it tributes has a much longer review history. Pedal of the Day (www.pedal-of-the-day.com) called the original SCF "a classic, 3-in-1 pedal with a bunch of little options that make it really versatile and a great addition to your sound overall"7, and its review of the SCF Gold praised the reissue's "near-endless headroom, colossal dynamic range, muscular low-frequency response, and whisper-quiet operation"2. Those are judgments about the analog TC circuit, though, not the Mini SCF's DSP take on it.

Questions

Is the NUX Mini SCF analog or digital?

It is digital. NUX says its DSP processing runs at 48KHz/32-bit with 48KHz/24-bit converters, and that the dry signal stays analog. The algorithm is written to mimic the principles of BBD (bucket brigade device) chips, the key component of the analog chorus pedals it tributes.

Does the NUX Mini SCF work in stereo?

Yes. It supports stereo input and output using a single 1/4 inch TRS cable, with a Stereo mode to select. Delicious Audio's reviewer noted that having stereo at this size and price is what sets the mini SCF apart from other mini pedals.

Does the NUX Mini SCF have true bypass?

Yes, and buffer bypass too. You can choose between True-bypass and Buffer-bypass (Trails) by holding the footswitch while the pedal boots up. The footswitch indicator flashes green for buffer bypass and red for true bypass.

What power does the NUX Mini SCF need?

It runs on 9V DC with a negative tip, using the optional NUX ACD-008 adapter. Current draw is less than 100mA, so it needs a proper power supply rather than a battery.

Does the NUX Mini SCF have tap tempo?

Yes. It has Smart Tap Tempo, and the single smart footswitch doubles as the tap tempo control, so you can set modulation speed in time with the music without a separate switch.

What is P.M. mode on the NUX Mini SCF?

P.M. stands for pitch modulation. NUX describes it as a combination of chorus and pitch vibrato that creates a lighter chorus sound. It sits between the full Chorus mode and the FLG flanger mode on the three-way mode selector.
