The Origin Effects Halcyon Gold is an adaptive overdrive pedal from British maker Origin Effects, built on the Klon Centaur circuit. Origin describes the Centaur as "an all-time classic" whose "clarity, dynamics and unique clean blend make it an excellent choice for players who like their overdrive pedals to" stay responsive, and the Halcyon Gold is the company's take on that circuit1. What sets it apart from a straight clone is a DRY control that puts the clean blend on its own knob, plus Origin's proprietary Adaptive Circuitry, which changes its voicing in response to pick attack and volume changes1.
Guitar World's Trevor Curwen framed it as a repeat of a formula: "What Origin Effects did for the Tube Screamer with its Halcyon Green Overdrive, it is doing again for the Klon Centaur" with the Gold2.
A Klon Centaur circuit with its own dry control
The original Klon Centaur blends its dry and effected signals in parallel, courtesy of a single Gain control, and uses a concentric gain control arrangement5. The Halcyon Gold takes a different approach to the same idea. As Origin explains it, "The Halcyon Gold splits each of these sections onto its own control, so you have total control over the amount of dry signal in your sound"6.
In practice, the DRY control adjusts the level of the clean signal that makes up part of the drive tone. Increasing it adds body and definition; turning it down suits higher gain tones1. Delicious Audio notes that the center position of the Dry knob represents the setting closer to the Klon standard, so a player can start from the familiar Centaur blend and move either way from there7.
Origin also says it made improvements to the dry path, "changing the overload characteristics when stacking with other pedals"7. Guitar World reported the same point at launch: Origin "adjusted the overload characteristics of the dry path to make stacking pedals a more pleasurable experience"8.
The controls
The control set covers the Klon basics plus Origin's additions12:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Level | Sets output level; Pete Thorn noted there is lots of volume on tap for boosting the amp9 |
| Drive | Sets the amount of overdrive9 |
| DRY | Adjusts the level of dry signal in the drive tone; up adds body and definition, down suits higher gain1 |
| Tone | Tone control9; under Adaptive Circuitry the circuitry also takes control of it6 |
| ADAPT switch | Three positions: 0, I, II2 |
| VOICE switch | KLN or MOD voicing2 |
| Bypass footswitch | Switches the effect in and out2 |
Adaptive Circuitry and the ADAPT switch
Adaptive Circuitry is the feature Origin calls the pedal's "party trick." The ADAPT switch "allows the pedal's mid-forward voicing to gradually fade away as the pedal cleans up"1. Delicious Audio describes the switch as selecting from two modes, one lighter and one heavier, or bypassing Adaptive Circuitry entirely7.
On the Halcyon Gold specifically, Origin says the Adaptive Circuitry "takes control of both the overdrive's voicing and the tone control"6. The maker's designer interview describes the result as pedals that "deliver classic rock tones, with the ability to sympathetically deliver transparency in response to player dynamics"10.
Guitar World's launch coverage explained the practical effect: "This effectively gives you both of the Klon's most revered settings at the same time: transparent boost tones at lower guitar volume settings, and mid-heavy drive at higher levels"8.
In his demo video, Pete Thorn described the adaptive toggle as technology "that allows you to basically roll down the volume on your guitar" while keeping top end and clarity, compared with a dark, woolly sound with it switched out9.
"As soon as I switched in the Adaptive circuitry, I think if you were listening closely you would have heard the top end open up."
KLN and MOD voicings
The VOICE switch selects between two voicings1:
- KLN: The standard voicing, "the classic Klon recipe, with an aggressive mid peak and the clipping characteristics of unobtainable vintage diodes faithfully recreated using modern parts"3. Origin says it matches the response of the unit the company borrowed6.
- MOD: Origin's own voicing, "a more mellow mid-hump with a softer, more compressed clipping character, suited to single-coil pickups and using the pedal with a completely clean amp"6. The maker's product page adds that MOD is particularly well suited to higher gain tones with very clean amps1.
Thorn compared the two in his demo, finding that "the modded sound seems to just be a little less fizzy to me, it's got a little less hash or something on the top end," most audible with the drive turned up high9.
Power and connections
The Halcyon Gold runs on 9V DC through a 2.1 mm center-negative connector and draws 200 mA1.
There is no battery option. The pedal is powered by a mains adaptor only, which is not included, and at 200 mA it is a heavier draw than many compact overdrives, so plan power supply capacity accordingly1.
Connections are a standard input and standard output2. The pedal measures 124 × 58 × 64 mm including knobs and switches and weighs 500 g1. Guitar Pedal X notes the Halcyon pedals use "weapons-grade steel enclosures"11.
What reviewers said
Guitar World's review credited the pedal with excellent build quality2. Pete Thorn found the clean mix feature especially useful for rhythm playing, saying he could blend in some clean signal and keep all the punch and articulation, and describing the blended result as "less pedal-like and a little more punchy and clear" with an amp-like character9.
At launch, Guitar World's news coverage noted Chris Buck's playing in the pedal's demos8.

Questions
Does the Halcyon Gold take a battery?
No. The pedal is powered by a mains adaptor only, which is not included, and Origin Effects left out the usual 9V battery option. It runs on 9V DC through a 2.1 mm center-negative connector and draws 200 mA, so it needs a proper power supply rather than a battery.
Is the Halcyon Gold true bypass or buffered?
It uses a high-quality buffered bypass rather than true bypass. The pedal also has an ultra-high 1 MΩ input impedance, which helps it preserve the character of the guitar feeding it. A single Bypass footswitch switches the effect in and out.
What is the difference between KLN and MOD mode on the Halcyon Gold?
KLN is the standard voicing, matching the classic Klon Centaur recipe with an aggressive mid peak. MOD is Origin's own voicing, with a broader, more mellow mid hump and a softer, more compressed clipping character. Origin says MOD suits single-coil pickups and running the pedal into a completely clean amp.
How much does the Halcyon Gold cost in the US?
At launch in August 2023 the list price was $299 USD excluding tax. A 2026 price report lists it at $253.00. UK pricing at launch was £249 including VAT, and the maker's product page lists £215.83 excluding VAT.
Is the Halcyon Gold good for stacking with other pedals?
Origin Effects says it adjusted the overload characteristics of the dry path specifically to make stacking pedals a more pleasurable experience. The DRY control also lets you dial back clean signal for higher gain tones or add body and definition at lower gain settings.
