The Oscillator Devices ABY is a bidirectional MIDI TRS ABY box: a small pedal that switches one output between two inputs, or one input between two outputs, under MIDI control. A, B and Y refer to the IN/OUT connections, so it can put your signal on A, on B, or on both at once. It is developed and built by Oscillator Devices in Germany, and it sits in the switching corner of a MIDI-controlled rig rather than among the MIDI pedals that make sounds of their own.12

What it does and how it is controlled

Because the box is bidirectional, the same jacks work either way round: it either switches one output between two inputs, or one input between two outputs. That covers the usual ABY jobs, sending a guitar to two amps or choosing between two sources into one input, from a single unit.1

Control is by MIDI. You can use CC messages, or PC commands with presets, and the maker says you can configure the ABY individually for all 128 PC commands, so a MIDI switcher or controller can recall any routing state as part of a song preset. Connection is over MIDI TRS: a 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) stereo jack plug is used, with MIDI In and MIDI Thru so the box can sit mid-chain.12

The top button handles setup, testing and visual feedback. Its color tells you the routing at a glance1:

  • Green: A is connected to IN/OUT
  • Red: B is connected to IN/OUT
  • Orange: both are connected1

Signal path and stereo

The ABY is true bypass, which the maker describes as a passive signal path: "There are no buffers in the signal path, just a straight, relay-based signal path."1 For a switcher that sits permanently in line, that means it does not color the signal when it is simply passing audio through.

It works with TRS plugs and can route stereo signals, and it can equally be used with TS cables and mono signals.1

The maker's page gives the footprint as 93 mm x 39 mm and 32 mm in height, while its specification table lists 94 x 39 x 33 mm. The two figures differ slightly, and both come from the same maker page.2

Price and availability

The ABY is listed at 89,00 EUR on the maker's shop page as of 25 October 2026 for international shipping with a 3 to 5 day shipping window.2 The current documentation is the ABY 1.2 user manual, published in April 2026.1

Questions

Can the Oscillator Devices ABY handle stereo signals?

Yes. The maker says the ABY works with TRS plugs and can route stereo signals, and it can also be used with ordinary TS cables and mono signals. Because it is bidirectional, the same TRS jacks serve as inputs or outputs depending on how you set it up, so one unit can cover both mono and stereo routing jobs on a board.

How is the ABY controlled?

It is a MIDI device: you can control it with CC messages or with PC commands and presets, and the maker says it can be configured individually for all 128 PC commands. It has MIDI In and MIDI Thru jacks on 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) stereo plugs, so it chains into a MIDI TRS network alongside your other MIDI pedals.
