The PastFX Elastic Mattress Deluxe Flanger is an analog flanger pedal from Australian maker PastFX, released in September 2025 at a list price of $2091. PastFX describes it as its original spin on the Deluxe Electric Mistress pedal made by Electro-Harmonix in the late 1970s and 1980s, built around a Matsushita / Panasonic MN3007 bucket brigade device (BBD), the analog delay chip that creates the flanging effect2. Where the original EHX pedal had a fixed set of controls, the Deluxe Elastic Mattress adds a negative feedback pushbutton and a voicing switch, giving a player more shaping options than the vintage circuit offered1.
The pedal is the fourth major iteration of PastFX's Electric Mistress circuit, following the Elastic Mattress V2 and V3, and it sits alongside the Reticon Flanger and Hot for Flanger in the maker's flanger range1.
An Electric Mistress take with added controls
The Deluxe Elastic Mattress is based on the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress, the green 1980s version of EHX's classic flanger, itself an outgrowth of the 1970s Electric Mistress2. The earlier standard Elastic Mattress takes a different slice of the same history: PastFX built it on the mid to late 1970s 18-volt V2 Electric Mistress, a circuit the maker describes as characterized by "liquidy, gracefully modulated tones"45. The original V2 Electric Mistress was famously used in live and studio recordings by David Gilmour, both as a solo artist and with Pink Floyd4.
The Deluxe model differs from the standard Elastic Mattress in both circuit and features. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, who owns the V2, V3 and Deluxe editions, notes that the V3 and Deluxe "are considered different circuits"6. The Deluxe also omits the stereo output port that the Elastic Mattress V2 introduced1.
The controls
PastFX gives the Deluxe Elastic Mattress the classic Mistress control set plus two new pushbuttons21.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rate | Sets the speed of the modulation |
| Range | Sets the sweep of the flange |
| Color | Sets the intensity of the effect |
| Blend / Mix | Balances dry and wet signal |
| Mini Level | Output level control |
| Filter Matrix switch | Static LFO bypass, freezing the sweep for filter matrix sounds1 |
| +/- Negative feedback | New pushbutton shaping the feedback path1 |
| 70's / 80's voicing | New pushbutton switching between two audio filtering designs2 |
The voicing pushbutton switches between the two different audio filtering designs used in the circuit: the early, darker circuit and the lighter filtering of the classic green Deluxe Mistress2. There is also an internal high / low impedance switch2.
By comparison, the standard Elastic Mattress V2 carried Rate, Filter (LFO off), Range, Blend, Bright, Color, an internal volume trimmer and an internal treble trimmer, with the V2 update adding an external mini level knob and stereo output7. Earlier versions used an internal volume trimmer rather than an external level control, which Guitar Pedal X noted was "not quite as convenient" but worked just as well8.
History and versions
The Elastic Mattress line has evolved through several versions:
- Original Elastic Mattress: a PastFX take on the vintage EHX Electric Mistress8
- V2: added an external mini level knob7
- V3: owned by the Guitar Pedal X reviewer6
- Deluxe (V4): the 4th major iteration of the PastFX circuit and the 3rd Elastic Mattress, listed at $2091
The Deluxe Elastic Mattress is the 4th major iteration of the PastFX circuit and the 3rd Elastic Mattress1. The Guitar Pedal X reviewer owns the V2 and V3 Elastic Mattresses, and the Deluxe model completes that trifecta6. PastFX lists the Deluxe Elastic Mattress at $2099.
What reviewers said
Guitar Pedal X reviewed the Deluxe Elastic Mattress in October 2025. Stefan Karlsson found that "the pedal sounded gorgeous from the start" without any internal adjustment, and that overall he favors the Positive Feedback setting and the 80s lighter voicing6. He also found the Deluxe "particularly lush sounding with a slightly richer and denser texture than the original Mistress Mattress"6.
Earlier in the line's history, the same reviewer judged the Elastic Mattress V2 "possibly the most special one in the Trifecta" with its stereo output, calling it "the ultimate of this genre with no direct equivalent"7. In a 2024 retrospective he found both of his Elastic Mattress variants sound exceptional, with the second iteration getting the most out of the bright and sparky flanger sound9. The Deluxe Elastic Mattress went on to win a Silver award in Guitar Pedal X's 2025 best new modulation pedals of the year10.

Questions
What pedal is the PastFX Elastic Mattress based on?
The Elastic Mattress line is based on the Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress. The original PastFX Elastic Mattress takes the mid to late 1970s 18-volt V2 Electric Mistress as its circuit, while the Deluxe Elastic Mattress is a spin on the Deluxe Electric Mistress of the late 1970s and 1980s, the green version with its lighter filtering.
Does the Deluxe Elastic Mattress have a stereo output?
No. The Elastic Mattress V2 added stereo outputs, but the Deluxe Elastic Mattress omits the stereo output port of its predecessor and runs mono only. The mono output is unchanged from previous versions of the standard Elastic Mattress.
What BBD chip does the Elastic Mattress Deluxe use?
It uses a Matsushita, also known as Panasonic, MN3007 bucket brigade device. PastFX fits NOS (new old stock) MN3007 chips, the same BBD family used across its flanger range, which keeps the delay line fully analog.
Is PastFX related to Buffalo FX?
No. Beginning in Spring 2020 people contacted PastFX asking whether it was a new offshoot of Buffalo FX that could fulfill outstanding orders, but PastFX is a separate Australian maker with its own line of vintage-inspired analog pedals.
What does the negative feedback button do?
The Deluxe Elastic Mattress adds a plus/minus negative feedback pushbutton. It works alongside the Color control to shape the intensity and character of the flanging, letting the player push the regeneration in either direction rather than being limited to the fixed feedback of the original circuit.
