The Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone Germanium Gold Micro is a compressor, sustainer and distortion effect in a micro pedal enclosure12. It takes the optical sustain engine from the original Philosopher's Tone and lets you mix in a layer of germanium-enhanced distortion1. Pigtronix announced it as a return of their original compressor/sustainer/distortion effect in micro form1.

The pedal traces back to the Philosopher's Tone Germanium Gold, a limited-edition take on Pigtronix's acclaimed Philosopher's Tone compressor with added germanium clipping diodes3. The Micro keeps that idea, but shrinks it for the pedalboard: despite its size it carries four dedicated control knobs, labeled Volume, Blend, Sustain and Grit2.

An optical sustainer with germanium distortion

The GGM takes the original Philosopher's Tone optical sustain engine5. Optical compression uses a light-dependent resistor to control gain reduction, which many players find smoother and more transparent than a VCA or FET design. The "clean" side of the Germanium Gold Micro remains identical to Pigtronix's original Philosopher's Tone, with the same optical sustain engine at its heart6.

On top of that sits the distortion layer. It is powered by germanium diodes that add a dash of usable distortion2. Pigtronix describes the result as a distortion with "smooth top end and rich midrange response," tailored to match the characteristics of the optical sustainer16.

"It's a distortion with 'smooth top end and rich midrange response,' according to Pigtronix."

The lineage is worth knowing. The original Germanium Gold was a limited-edition take on the acclaimed Philosopher's Tone compressor with added germanium clipping diodes3. Aion FX's documentation of the family notes that the Germanium Gold edition featured a single germanium diode in place of one of the silicon diodes in the clipping section7. The Micro carries that germanium clipping forward in a smaller box.

Guitar.com's reviewer Richard Purvis rated the Germanium Gold Micro 9/103. MusicRadar's reviewer Trevor Curwen highlighted the Blend knob as a reason to buy, alongside the Grit circuitry8.

The controls

The pedal has four knobs2:

ControlWhat it does
VolumeNormal compressor output control2
SustainSets the amount of compression82
BlendBrings in some of your unaffected clean guitar signal2
GritAdds the germanium-diode distortion part of the circuit2

Volume and Sustain are your normal compressor controls2. The Blend control is the one that sets this pedal apart for many players: it allows you to bring in some of your unaffected clean guitar signal2, so heavy compression and sustain never swallow your original attack and tone. MusicRadar's review called the Blend knob a reason to buy8.

The Grit knob is the other half of the story. That Grit knob is coupled to germanium diode circuitry8, and it adds a gritty drive to the compressed portion of the sound, from a raw edge to full amp-like raunch8. Because the grit affects only the compressed portion, the Blend knob lets you keep clean low end underneath a driven top, or push the whole thing into amp-like breakup.

Setting the Sustain knob for the minimum amount of compression is one way reviewers used the pedal, leaning on the Grit side as a drive instead8.

How it differs from the pedals around it

The Philosopher's Tone family is wide, and the Germanium Gold Micro sits at a specific point in it. Aion FX notes the Philosopher's Tone underwent several revisions and new editions, including the Germanium Gold edition, the Philosopher's Rock, the Philosopher's Bass, and a miniature pedal reusing the Philosopher's Tone name7.

Power and switching

The pedal runs on a 9V power supply, which is doubled internally to increase headroom, clarity and output4. It also comes with true bypass switching4.

The internal voltage doubling means the pedal runs at higher headroom than a standard 9V pedal, so check your power supply's capacity against the pedal's manual before adding it to a crowded board.

Questions

What does the Grit knob do on the Germanium Gold Micro?

The Grit knob controls the germanium-diode distortion side of the circuit. It adds a gritty drive to the compressed portion of your sound, ranging from a raw edge to full amp-like raunch. Because it only affects the compressed signal, you can keep your clean tone intact using the Blend knob while dialing in as much grit as you want.

Is the Germanium Gold Micro the same as the Philosopher's Tone?

Not quite. The clean side of the Germanium Gold Micro is identical to the original Philosopher's Tone, using the same optical sustain engine. The difference is the added germanium-diode distortion layer, controlled by the Grit knob, which the original Philosopher's Tone does not have. It also comes in a smaller micro pedal enclosure.

What diodes are in the Pigtronix Germanium Gold Micro?

The distortion side of the circuit is powered by germanium diodes. The lineage goes back to the limited-edition Philosopher's Tone Germanium Gold, which put a single germanium diode in place of one of the silicon diodes in the clipping section. Pigtronix says the result is a smooth top end and rich midrange response.
