The Redbeard Effects Bearded Vulture Direct Drive is a distortion pedal built around two independent circuits: a straight drive circuit and an octave circuit, each with its own footswitch, usable on their own or blended together1. It is a solid-state mono pedal, so there are no tubes inside, but it is designed to recreate the character of a tube saturator, specifically the celebrated 1998 Thermionic Culture Vulture rack unit1.

Guitar.com's Richard Purvis explains the origin: Mikey and Adrian "decide to create a compact stompbox inspired by the heavily saturated tones of that preamp," a high-end rack unit billed as "the only studio unit dedicated to just adding valve-produced harmonic distortion"2. The Bearded Vulture is the fifth Redbeard pedal, following four previous variations on the theme of high gain2.

What it does to your sound

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson describes the pedal as ranging "from overdrive and distortion into fuzz, with lively, searing, tube-saturation-style sustain and harmonics"1. In his words, the pedal is "best described as 'Lively' and 'Searing'", with tube-saturation-style character and fairly lengthy singing sustain1. Where the octave circuit is concerned, Karlsson found it equally adept as an octave overdrive and octave distortion, and best used as a searing high-octane octave fuzz4.

The two circuits can be used independently or mixed. As Guitar.com puts it, "you're getting two independent distortion circuits in one box: yes, the octave effect can be added to the standard drive"2. The octave circuit itself is a new addition to this format and was not present on the original rack unit1.

The controls

The pedal splits its controls between the two circuits14:

CircuitControlWhat it does
DriveVolumeSets overall output level1
DriveDriveAmount of drive4
DriveBiasHighly interactive with the Drive control4
DriveTimbreDual filter / midrange character4
OctaveLevelOctave circuit level4
OctaveDriveOctave circuit drive4

Two footswitches, one for Drive and one for Octave, let you bring each circuit in separately on the fly1.

What reviewers said

Guitar Pedal X reviewed the pedal in March 2025 and it "was highly recommended", described as an absolute must buy and one of the stars of the show at the recent Birmingham Guitar Show1. Revisiting it in December 2025 for a roundup of the year's best new fuzz pedals, Karlsson was still emphatic: "My favourite Redbeard Effects pedal now, and one of the best pedals Thorpy has engineered to date!"4 The pedal took a SILVER award in that roundup4.

ThorpyFX's write-up of the pedal describes its character as best suited to 'Lively' and 'Searing' sounds, with a tube-saturation style character and fairly lengthy singing sustain1. The same write-up notes that Thorpy added an Octave circuit to the design and wholly recreated the Culture Vulture's style of output in solid state mono format1.

Price and availability

Guitar Pedal X priced the Bearded Vulture Direct Drive at £219 ($285) from the Redbeard Effects webstore in March 20251. By December 2025 the same publication listed it at £219 / $2904. In the UK it is sold through the Redbeard Effects webstore1.

The pedal is a UK-made product priced in pounds, with a US dollar figure quoted by reviewers. The dollar price moved from $285 in March 2025 to $290 by December 202514.

Where it sits in the Redbeard range

The Bearded Vulture's circuit carries Thorpy's fingerprints: he added an Octave circuit, inspired by Mikey Demus's direct-guitar discovery, and recreated the Culture Vulture's style of output in solid state mono format1. Questions

What is the Bearded Vulture based on?

It is inspired by the Thermionic Culture Vulture, a high-end 1998 rack preamp billed as the only studio unit dedicated solely to adding valve-produced harmonic distortion. Redbeard Effects built the Bearded Vulture as a compact stompbox take on that preamp's heavily saturated tones, recreating its character in a solid-state mono pedal format.

Does the Bearded Vulture Direct Drive have an octave?

Yes. The octave circuit is a new addition for the pedal format and was not present on the original rack unit. It can be used on its own or blended with the standard drive circuit, and it has its own Level and Drive controls plus a dedicated footswitch.

Is the Bearded Vulture a fuzz or an overdrive?

It covers all three. Guitar Pedal X describes it as ranging from overdrive and distortion into fuzz depending on how the Drive, Bias and Timbre controls are set, with tube-saturation-style sustain and harmonics. Guitar.com lists it as a distortion pedal.

Is the Bearded Vulture a tube pedal?

No. Although it recreates the character of a tube saturator, Guitar Pedal X describes the Bearded Vulture as a solid-state mono pedal. The tube-style saturation comes from the circuit design, not from valves inside the box.

How much does the Bearded Vulture Direct Drive cost in the US?

Guitar Pedal X listed it at $290 as of December 2025, down from the $285 the same reviewer quoted in March 2025. In the UK it is priced at £219 through the Redbeard Effects webstore.
