The Reeves Electro Twin Sound is an Octavia-style octave fuzz, a fuzz design that generates an upper octave over the note you play. It was launched on 25 November 2023 in a limited run of 10 units, priced at £310 each1. The circuit is loosely based on Tim Escobedo's Push Me Pull You design from the 1990s, but builder Markus Reeves' version is much evolved from that classic, with different parts and values and different controls1.

Controls

The Twin Sound keeps things simple with two knobs1:

AttackIntensity of the fuzz and octave effect1

Sound

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson, who reviewed the pedal at launch, described it as "a really rather mellifluous octave fuzz overall"1. The two controls shape very different characters:

  • At lower degrees of Attack, Karlsson found it "does those cool brassy / saxy tones"1.
  • With the Attack maxed out, he reported "wonderful harmonic oscillation occurring on double stops in particular"1.

Transistors

The pedal uses three new-old-stock silicon transistors, each a different vintage and type1:

  1. First: a 1968 Micro Electronics BC1371
  2. Second: a 1980 white ceramic CIL BC1081
  3. Third: a 1980s Philips BC549C silver face1

Where it sits in the Reeves Electro range

The Twin Sound is part of Reeves Electro's line of limited, hand-built pedals, offered in a launch run of 10 units at £3101. Other pedals in the same family include the Facet IZ, the ZO Fuzz, the IZZrite, the Voltone Sub-Octave Fuzz and the Z11.

Questions

What does the Reeves Electro Twin Sound sound like?

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson described it as a really rather mellifluous octave fuzz overall. At lower Attack settings he found it produced brassy, sax-like tones, while maxing the Attack brought harmonic oscillation on double stops in particular. It is an Octavia-style fuzz, meaning it generates an upper octave over the played note.

Is the Twin Sound a copy of the Push Me Pull You?

No. Guitar Pedal X reports that the circuit is loosely based on Tim Escobedo's Push Me Pull You design from the 1990s, but that Markus Reeves' version is much evolved from the Escobedo classic, with not just different parts and values but different controls as well.

How many Twin Sound pedals were made?

The launch run was limited to 10 units, which went up for order at 8pm GMT on 25 November 2023 at £310 each, according to Guitar Pedal X.

Which transistors are in the Twin Sound?

Guitar Pedal X lists three NOS silicon transistors: a 1968 Micro Electronics BC137 first, a 1980 white ceramic CIL BC108 second, and finally a 1980s Philips BC549C silver face.

What does the Attack knob do on the Twin Sound?

The Attack knob, labelled Intensity, works alongside a Level (Output) knob. Lower Attack settings give the brassy, sax-like octave tones, and pushing the Attack to maximum produces harmonic oscillation, most noticeably on double stops.
