The REVV G8 is a compact noise gate pedal from REVV, the Canadian amplifier and pedal builder. Released in October 2021, it was the company's first pedal that was not a gain effect1. Its circuit is taken directly from the noise gate in REVV's Generator 120 MK3 amplifier head, which the maker describes as "legendary"23.

REVV says the G8 is "engineered to provide surgical noise reduction that removes the hum, hiss & high-gain feedback without damaging your guitars natural characteristics"2. In other words, it is aimed squarely at high-gain players who need the noise floor between notes silenced without the gate chopping off sustain or tone. Delicious Audio summed up the design goal as a "Totally transparent feel - like plugging straight into the amp - but without the noise!"1

What the G8 does and how it is controlled

A noise gate mutes or attenuates the signal when it falls below a set level, so hum, hiss and feedback between phrases disappear while the notes themselves pass through untouched. The G8 gives the player three knobs for shaping that behavior3:

ControlWhat it does
ThresholdSets the exact level at which the gate engages; REVV describes it as dialing in the exact engagement point2
HoldHolds the gate open for a set time after the signal drops, so sustained notes are not cut short
ReleaseSets how quickly the gate closes; Guitar World notes it "allows users to adjust the gate so as to not interrupt their sustain"6

The Hold and Release controls are what separate a gate like this from simpler one-knob units. On Gearnews, Julian Schmauch wrote that "most noise gate pedals give you either speed or control, but the G8 gives you both," and that its threshold closes pretty much instantly7. That combination of instant closing and adjustable hold and release times is the practical appeal for players using heavy gain, where a slow gate lets noise through and an abrupt one kills sustain.

REVV also says the G8 "targets and refines particular frequencies" rather than acting on the whole signal at once3, which is how it can remove hiss and hum without dulling the guitar's character.

Wiring: two cables or four

The G8 has four 1/4" jacks: an input, an output, and a send, giving it an FX loop31. Delicious Audio notes the "4 jacks allow super simple 2-cable setups or sonically precise 4-cable setups"1.

  • Two-cable setup: guitar into the G8, G8 into the amp. The gate acts on the guitar signal before the preamp1.
  • Four-cable setup: the G8 sits in the amplifier's effects loop, so it gates the already-amplified signal, where high-gain noise is at its loudest1.

The four-cable method is the same approach used by loop-equipped gates such as the Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor and the ISP Technologies Decimator II G-String, and it is generally the more effective placement for high-gain rigs.

The gate from the Generator 120 MK3

The G8's circuit is not a fresh design. REVV says it is "extracted from the legendary REVV G120"2, and the maker's own account of the pedal's origin is straightforward: "We weren't really planning on designing a gate until the response to Generator 120 MK3's gate was so positive"3. GuitarPlayer's buying guide likewise calls it "based on the revered gate from the REVV Generator 120 MK3 top unit"8, and Gearnews puts it plainly: "Revv took the gate circuit out of its Generator 120 MK3 head and put it in a box"7.

The pedal was designed by Dan Trudeau, President and Head Designer of Revv Amplification Inc.1, and it is manufactured in Canada with a two year limited warranty upon registration2. It ships in a black metallic graphic enclosure with a bright LED for on/off confirmation1.

Power and bypass

The G8 runs on a 9V DC supply drawing 50mA3. Delicious Audio's specification adds that it accepts 9 to 12V center negative external power supply operation, 50mA minimum1, so a standard center-negative pedalboard supply covers it.

The bypass specification is reported two ways. REVV's current product page says the G8 is "equipped with buffered bypass"3, while Delicious Audio's 2021 writeup listed it as true bypass1. The maker's page is the more recent source, so the buffered description is the one to rely on, but the two sources disagree and both are recorded here.

What reviewers said

The G8's reception so far rests on what REVV itself says about it. The maker describes it as having a "Totally transparent feel - like plugging straight into the amp - but without the noise!"1, and its Thresh knob "dials the exact level of noise reduction you require"1. As a newly released pedal, it carries a list price of $198.00 USD7.

At launch, Guitar World reported the G8 was available immediately at $1996; Gearnews listed it at $198.00 USD as of July 20267.
