The Skreddy Pedals Hybrid Fuzz Driver is a hand-built pedal that the maker describes as "Amp-like, articulate boost, overdrive, and light fuzz"123. It is an overdrive with a treble-boosted flavor: Skreddy says it distorts with a creamy voice yet retains the guitar's essential nature, running from an articulate boost in its low-gain mode to an aggressive but not too fuzzy voice in high-gain mode4. It sits in the fuzzy-drive territory between a straight overdrive and a fuzz pedal.
What it does and how it is controlled
The Hybrid Fuzz Driver has five controls. Guitar Pedal X's 2021 buying guide listed them as "Controls - Volume, Fuzz, Tightness, Presence, Mid Boost"5. Skreddy's own description of the Mid Boost control gives a sense of how the pedal is voiced: it "Sets the gain of the input stage, and is set to boost mids rather than full range boost," adding aggression, gain and compression while keeping the bass tight, and turning down for more headroom and cleanness4.
Two features set it apart from many fuzz-based drives:
- An impedance-matching input stage that, in Skreddy's words, "works behind wah pedals without squeal or tone suck and does not mind having buffers" in front of it4
- Two gain modes: aggressive but not too fuzzy in high-gain mode, and articulate boost in low-gain mode4
That wah-friendly input stage matters because many fuzz circuits are notoriously fussy about what feeds them. Skreddy states plainly that "this pedal goes anywhere in the signal chain just fine"4, which makes it an easier fit on a board that already includes a wah or a buffer.
Power and battery
The pedal runs on 9v DC and accepts "the industry-standard 9v DC plug (5.5mm barrel x 2.1mm center coax), negative tip"4. It also runs on a 9v battery, but "9v battery is not included"4. Skreddy advises unplugging the input cable when the pedal is not in use to keep the battery from draining, or using a power supply that disconnects the battery4.
Price and availability
The Hybrid Fuzz Driver is built to order. Skreddy lists the stock status as preorder, with a "Lead time of about 2 weeks" and a current wait time of approximately 2 weeks to 1 month4. The maker's current listing shows a price of $301, discounted to a sale price of $270.90 as of October 202642. For comparison, Guitar Pedal X's August 2021 buying guide listed the pedal at $2495.
Hybrid Fuzz Driver vs Hybrid Overdrive
Skreddy also makes a closely related pedal, the Hybrid Overdrive, and the maker is direct about how the two compare. Skreddy says the Hybrid Overdrive sounds nearly identical to the Hybrid Fuzz Driver and uses the same old-school silicon-germanium fuzz stage6. The differences, per Skreddy:
- The Hybrid Overdrive has a stronger tone control, for less high-end fizz and a better ability to darken at minimum
- It has an ever-so-slightly stronger low-midrange
- It stays punchy and cutting even at max gain and never gets mushy
- The Hybrid Overdrive has 3 controls, and Skreddy notes "It has a good range for just 3 controls"6
The Hybrid Overdrive is listed at $205 plus shipping6, against the Hybrid Fuzz Driver's $301 list price61, so the simpler control layout is also the less expensive of the two.
Recognition
Tone Report named the Hybrid Fuzz Driver to its Best Pedals of 2013 list, as noted on Skreddy's product page4.
