SoloDallas SVDS Mini Boost

The SoloDallas SVDS Mini Boost is a small, one-knob boost pedal that reproduces the analog boost circuit found inside the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System (SVDS), the wireless system for guitar originally introduced in 1975¹². Where a typical clean boost just makes you louder, SoloDallas positions this one differently: the maker says it "adds vintage coloration and harmonics that instantly transport you to the gr"eat vintage tones the original system produced, spanning the distance between boost and overdrive¹³.

The full-size version of the circuit is sold as the SoloDallas SVDS Boost; the Mini Boost is the same idea in a pedalboard-friendly mini enclosure³².

What it does to your sound

The single knob is the only control. Premier Guitar's reviewer described how it behaves: unity gain sits in the earliest third of its range, and above that the pedal adds increasing volume, compression, saturation and growl⁵. That behavior is what separates it from a clean boost: turn it up and it colors the tone, not just the level.

SoloDallas says the pedal "delivers harmonically rich vintage overdrive with legendary latency, adding unparalleled character and depth to your sound"⁷. The maker also builds in a fixed EQ voicing it calls the "Goalpost" EQ.

The Goalpost EQ

The Goalpost EQ is the pedal's tonal signature, and it is not a control you adjust: it is how the circuit is voiced. SoloDallas says it "enhances harmonics and extreme ends of the frequency spectrum, while maintaining midrange"¹. Pedal of the Day described the same shape in its review of the Mini Boost, noting that it enhances the extreme ends of the spectrum while maintaining the integrity of the mid-range².

For a player, that means the boosted signal gets more sparkle on top and more weight on the bottom without the mids dropping out, which is what keeps a boosted tone from sounding thin when it hits the front of an amp¹².

Where the circuit came from

The SVDS Mini Boost traces back to the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System, an all-analog, tone enhancing wireless system introduced in 1975²⁸. The system had internal gain controls to boost the signal⁹, and players discovered an unofficial trick: by connecting their instruments to the system's quarter-inch headphone output, intended for monitoring, they could boost their signal by up to 30dB².

SoloDallas, which Paul Riario of Guitar World describes as "a company of passionate tone connoisseurs," reproduced that exact circuit for the SVDS Boost line³. The Mini Boost is the mini-format version of that reproduction².

Guitar World's Paul Riario called it "a novel gain boost with vintage coloration and up to 30dB of boost"³. In Guitar World's boost pedal buying guide, the verdict on the SoloDallas SVDS Boost was:

Pedal of the Day, reviewing the Mini Boost in November 2024, wrote that "this small but HUGE-sounding boost will punch your amp right in the…uh, mouth, with big, fat tones and an intriguing EQ" unlike any other they had heard². The same review noted the pedal is precision-built to withstand the rigors of professional touring².

Premier Guitar gave the SVDS Boost a Gear Award, with the reviewer writing that its "Minimalist controls, one knob, that's it, make this boost no less delicious"⁵.
