The SoloDallas The Schaffer Replica Classic is an analog preamp and boost pedal that recreates the audio circuitry of the Schaffer-Vega Diversity System (SVDS), the all-analog wireless system used widely in the 1970s and 1980s, without the wireless part12. RockBoard's PedalPedia describes it as a pedal that will "lift your licks up and give them the crunch, bite, and articulation they need to be heard"1. Where most boost pedals simply raise your level, the Classic's compander circuitry conditions the tone as well, which is why reviewers have grouped it with pedals players leave on all the time.

The pedal is a pedal-sized version of SoloDallas' "Gold Tag" Tower, itself a replica of the SVDS, with a high-quality PCB using gold-plated contacts3. It is 100% analog, built in a super sturdy casing, and keeps everything to a two-dial interface13.

A preamp and boost with compander circuitry

What the circuit does for a player is twofold. Pedal of the Day's reviewer found that "the whole pedal adds sustain, shapes your tone, drives amps into sweet spots and makes your sound stand out in any mix you can imagine"3. MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen placed it alongside the Klon and Xotic EP Booster as a tone-conditioning pedal rather than a straightforward boost:

"The Replica is a pedal of a similar ilk: try it and you won't want to turn it off."
Trevor Curwen, MusicRadar2

Premier Guitar reviewed the TSR4 Schaffer Replica Classic as an overdrive pedal with a companding circuit, and found it "can indeed add tonal 'juju' to help you get closer to Angus Young's iconic sound" when paired with a PAF-style bridge humbucker and an EL34-driven amp4.

What the compander does

A compander is a compressor and expander working as a pair. Premier Guitar explains that the TSR4's companding circuit "compresses incoming signals" and expands them on conversion back to analog, aiming to overcome dynamic-range limitations4. SoloDallas describes the equivalent circuit in the family as a soft-knee compressor fed into an expander "to restore amplitude and remove unwanted squish"5. In practice, the player hears added sustain and a more even, present signal rather than the pumping of a straightforward compressor.

The controls

The Classic keeps things to a two-dial interface1. The two knobs are Input and Output, which correspond to the original wireless system's Sensitivity and Monitor controls, and they work together to set how much your signal is boosted2.

ControlWhat it does
InputSets the input side of the circuit; works with Output to set boost amount2
OutputSets the output level; works with Input to set boost amount2

Premier Guitar's reviewer noted that higher output settings on the Classic "conjure mid and low-mid liveliness, and a subtle-but-significant quasi-gating effect"4. The pedal-sized TSR version delivers a 30dB clean boost preamp5.

Power: 9V, 100mA

The Classic runs on 9V DC with a center-negative plug and draws 100mA1. That makes it compatible with standard 9V pedalboard power supplies, unlike some of its siblings: MusicRadar noted of the Schaffer Replica line that "you'll have to use the wall wart if your power distributor doesn't do 12-volt high current"2. The EX Tower goes further afield, requiring 15V DC center positive at 250mA, with its PSU included5.

The Classic's 9V center-negative, 100mA requirement is standard, but check your supply's current budget. The EX Tower in the same family needs 15V DC center positive, so the two cannot share a typical daisy chain or 9V-only output15.

The Schaffer Replica family: Classic, Storm and EX Tower

The Schaffer Replica is available as a pedal or as a "Tower" unit housed in a cabinet nearly the same as the original SVDS2. SoloDallas offers the Replica in two versions, each an exact rebuild of the SVDS' audio circuitry6. The family as it stands:

ModelFormKey featuresStatus
ClassicPedal, two-dial interfaceCompander circuitry, 100% analog1Current
StormCompact pedal, three controlsOptical limiter, harmonic clipping, boost, line buffer; Neutrik jacks; Made in USA78Current
EX TowerTower cabinet, recreation of the SVDS Model 63EX receiver9Illuminated VU meter, 30dB of boost, extruded aluminum enclosure; Made in USA5Available for purchase at SoloDallas.com and through a worldwide network of dealers5

The Storm, the latest stompbox version of the Replica, contains the limiter, overdrive, boost and line buffer from the EX Tower in a compact metal enclosure with true-bypass switching and 100% analog circuitry10117. SoloDallas positions it as complementing clean or cranked Marshall amps, moving from warm, bluesy overdrive to full-on high-gain distortion8. Its LIMITER knob controls the signal amplitude threshold while removing the clipping and distortion generally associated with gain increases7. Guitar.com's Ed Oleszko found the real surprise was "how good the unit sounds out of its assumed comfort zone, with a maple-neck Tele into a clean Fender amp", behaving more like a compressor with added gain controls10.

The EX Tower is a recreation of the SVDS Model 63EX receiver, and it is available for purchase at SoloDallas.com and through a worldwide network of dealers911. The Schaffer Replica Tower line replicates the look of the legendary SVDS Model 63EX receiver6.

SoloDallas built the line by reverse-engineering the original Schaffer-Vega Diversity System wireless unit used by Angus Young, David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen and Joe Perry78. The Storm is available at SoloDallas.com and through a worldwide dealer network11, as is the EX Tower11.

Questions

Is the SoloDallas Schaffer Replica Classic analog or digital?

It is fully analog. The Classic is built around SoloDallas' specialist compander circuitry, described as 100% analog, in a sturdy pedal-sized enclosure. The same analog approach runs through the Schaffer Replica family, with the Storm and EX Tower also listed as 100% analog circuitry.

What power supply does the Schaffer Replica Classic need?

The Classic runs on 9V DC with a center-negative plug and draws 100mA. That is standard pedalboard territory: a typical 9V center-negative power supply with at least 100mA available will run it. The larger EX Tower is different, needing 15V DC center positive at 250mA, with its own PSU included.

What is a compander circuit in a guitar pedal?

A compander is a compressor paired with an expander. In the Schaffer Replica, the circuit compresses the incoming signal, then a soft-knee compressor feeds an expander that restores the amplitude and removes unwanted squish. Premier Guitar describes the aim as overcoming dynamic-range limitations by compressing signals on the way in and expanding them on the way back.

How does the Classic differ from the Storm and the EX Tower?

The Classic is the simple two-dial pedal version of the Schaffer Replica circuit. The Storm is a compact pedal combining an optical limiter, harmonic clipping, boost and line buffer with three controls. The EX Tower is the full recreation of the SVDS Model 63EX receiver in a tower cabinet, with an illuminated VU meter and 30dB of boost.

Where can I find the Schaffer Replica Classic manual?

The manual for the TSR Schaffer Replica Compander Boost is available as a PDF at manuals.plus, linked from the product's RockBoard PedalPedia page. SoloDallas also notes that product images show current versions, and that manuals for older models can be downloaded separately.
