The SurfyBear Compact is a spring reverb pedal from Surfy Industries, an Italian company (Surfy Industries SRL) known for spring reverb units and other effects, including DIY kits. What sets it apart from most reverb pedals is what is inside: a real spring reverb pan, driven by a circuit built to the specifications of the Fender 6G15 standalone reverb unit, with JFET transistors standing in for the original tubes1. The whole thing sits in an aluminum body the maker describes as "pedalboard-friendly" in size1.

Delicious Audio describes it as real spring reverb, "as in, with actual springs inside," that recreates the classic reverb sound of the vintage amps from the '60s2. Premier Guitar calls it an analog spring reverb unit with real springs, replicating the tank reverb units of the 1960s in a pedalboard-friendly housing3.

A real spring reverb in a pedal

Most reverb pedals simulate springs digitally or with an analog emulation circuit. The SurfyBear Compact takes the direct route: Surfy Industries says it incorporates a real spring reverb pan1. Guitar.com's Josh Gardner notes the unit features an Accutronics type-8 spring reverb pan5. That is the same approach as the full-size tank units it descends from, which is why players who want the drip and clatter of a genuine spring tank look at this family of pedals.

The trade-off is size and price. Delicious Audio's spring reverb buying guide lists "quite large and rather pricey" among the cons7, and Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson put it more bluntly in his comparison of true spring tank reverberators:

"For my preferences the Surfy Bear Compact is just too large - I would need to sacrifice too many slots in order to accommodate that."
Stefan Karlsson, Guitar Pedal X6

On the other side of the ledger, Pedal of the Day's reviewer found "the sleek look and high-quality design round everything out, making this a spring reverb that can go against the best out there," calling it "a true spring reverb" with "a wonderful control section, authentic sound and a stylish, well-built enclosure"8.

Surfy Industries ships its SurfyBear units with a small piece of foam blocking the spring for transportation. The foam must be removed before using the unit9.

Built on the Fender 6G15 controls

The circuit traces back to the Fender 6G15, a standalone reverb unit Fender developed before amplifiers carried onboard reverb10. Unlike onboard amp reverbs, the 6G15 was placed in front of the amplifier11. Surfy Industries' own documentation calls it one of the first reverb units available for electric guitars, famous for its characteristic bright, drippy sound, and says it set the standard for generations of musicians12. The original Fender unit is now discontinued and collectible13.

The SurfyBear line began as a DIY kit controller built to the same specifications as the 6G15, replacing the tubes with JFET transistor technology141. Surfy Industries describes the Compact as carrying the controls of the original Fender 6G15 with a few more options added1, and the Compact and Compact Deluxe both feature the same specifications as the 6G15 reverb unit, with the tubes replaced by JFET transistors1. The Compact carries those specifications in the smaller aluminum enclosure1.

Delicious Audio notes the controls follow the original Fender 6G15 layout, with a few more options added2. Pedal of the Day describes the unit as "based on the original Fender 6G15 Reverb Tank, with a couple of added bonus features"8.

The left footswitch and its two presets

The headline added feature is the dual mixer control. Surfy Industries describes it as a way to switch between two reverb settings1. In practice, the two mixer controls can be set to different depths and then switched seamlessly via the left footswitch, which Pedal of the Day sums up as "essentially giving you two reverbs in one"8. Delicious Audio frames it the same way: the left footswitch gives you access to two different dry/wet settings2.

For a player, that means one preset can sit at a subtle room depth while the other is dialed deep for full drip, and a single stomp swaps between them mid-song without touching a knob812.

How it differs from the Compact Deluxe

In February 2025 Surfy Industries introduced the Surfybear Compact Deluxe, which Delicious Audio calls an evolution of the Compact, "featuring a lot more features including an added Tremolo effect"15. The Deluxe keeps the same 6G15-based JFET circuit, the real springs, the aluminum pedalboard-friendly body and true bypass16, and adds:

  • A tremolo effect15
  • A dual mixer control with seamless switching between two reverb settings via the central footswitch15
  • External reverb pan support15
  • A clean boost15

The original Compact remains the simpler and smaller option: spring reverb only, with the two mixer presets on the left footswitch21.
