The Sushi Box FX Finally v3 is a tube D.I. pedal built around a high voltage 12AU7 preamp and an Unagi Magnetics E4305 D.I. transformer custom-made to Sushi Box's spec. Sushi Box FX describes it as "the next evolution of tube D.I.", developed in conjunction with Philip Mann of With Bass In Mind.1

What it does to your sound

Because the preamp is a real tube stage, the character of the pedal depends largely on the tube fitted. Sushi Box FX describes two distinct behaviors1:

  • Stock 12AU7: the preamp runs clean, and the Gain control acts as a saturation control, choosing how much "tube sound" you are getting.1
  • Higher gain tube (12AT7 or 12AX7): the Finally can be pushed into a smooth tube overdrive with the gain turned up.1

The pedal also carries a low-cut filter Sushi Box FX calls a "12+12" design: a fixed -12dB/octave rolloff below 30Hz, plus an additional -12dB per octave at a variable frequency from 30Hz to 120Hz. For bass players, that second stage is what lets you dial out mud without thinning the fundamental entirely.1

Power requirements

Sushi Box FX recommends a 9-12VDC power supply capable of delivering at least 500mA, and states that "Using less than this can damage the power supply and/or the pedal."1 This is well above what a typical daisy-chain output provides, so the Finally v3 needs its own supply output rated for the draw.

The product page offers an "Include Power Supply?" option with Yes or No choices, so a suitable supply can be ordered with the pedal.1

Finally v2 compared to v3

The Finally line has run through several versions. The Finally v2 was sold in a With Bass In Mind edition, which Sushi Box FX describes as the evolution of the original Finally tube D.I.; that edition is now listed as Archived on the maker's site.2 Like the v3, the v2 carried the Unagi Magnetics E4305 D.I. transformer custom-made to Sushi Box's spec.2

The v3 keeps the high voltage 12AU7 preamp of the previous version, but differs in its output arrangement: Sushi Box FX contrasts it with "the shared output design used on the Finally v2".1

Where it sits in the Sushi Box range

Sushi Box FX builds several tube preamp pedals. The More v2 is a related current design, a preamp pedal pairing "a carefully selected NOS 12AV7 paired with a 12AT7" to deliver, in the maker's words, "the warmth, punch, depth, and touch sensitivity of a real tube preamp stage".3 The Finally v3 differs by being a D.I. design with a dedicated output transformer, aimed at players who want the tube stage to carry their signal to the desk as well as the amp.

Questions

What is the Sushi Box FX Finally v3?

The Finally v3 is a tube D.I. pedal made by Sushi Box FX, built around a high voltage 12AU7 preamp and an Unagi Magnetics E4305 D.I. transformer custom-made to the company's spec. It was developed in conjunction with Philip Mann of With Bass In Mind and is the next evolution of the Finally tube D.I. design.

Can I swap the tube in the Finally v3 for a 12AX7?

Yes. Sushi Box FX says that with the stock 12AU7 the preamp runs clean and the Gain control acts as a saturation control, choosing how much tube sound you get. With a higher gain tube like a 12AT7 or 12AX7 installed, the Finally can be pushed into a smooth tube overdrive with the gain turned up.

What happens if I power the Finally v3 with less than 500mA?

Sushi Box FX recommends a 9-12VDC power supply capable of delivering at least 500mA and warns that using less than this can damage the power supply and/or the pedal. A standard low-current pedal supply output is not suitable for this pedal.

Who helped develop the Finally v3?

Sushi Box FX developed the Finally v3 in conjunction with Philip Mann of With Bass In Mind. The earlier Finally v2 was also sold in a With Bass In Mind edition.

Does the Finally v3 come with a power supply?

It can. The maker's product page offers an Include Power Supply? option with Yes or No choices, so you can order the pedal with or without a suitable power supply.

What is the difference between Finally v2 and v3?

The v3 moves away from the shared output design used on the Finally v2, according to Sushi Box FX. Both versions use the Unagi Magnetics E4305 D.I. transformer custom-made to Sushi Box's spec, and the v3 keeps the high voltage 12AU7 preamp of the previous version.
