The TolRed Pedal Germanium Fuzz is a germanium fuzz pedal from TolRed Pedal, a maker Pedal of the Day describes as building effects "designed for guitarists who seek classic analog tones with the reliability required in modern stage and studio conditions." At its core it is a take on a classic fuzz circuit: Pedal of the Day's review calls it "a redesigned version of the classic Tone Bender" MK2, the three-transistor fuzz design that shaped the sound of 1960s British rock, rebuilt with NPN germanium transistors and a few circuit changes of its own12.
What it does
Like any fuzz, the Germanium Fuzz clips the signal hard for a thick, sustaining distortion voice, and germanium transistors give that clipping a softer, vintage-flavored character than silicon designs. Where the TolRed departs from the vintage blueprint is the third knob. The original Tone Bender MK2 layout carried volume and attack; TolRed adds a Bias control, which Pedal of the Day calls "an extremely useful parameter to bring this sound into modern times"1.
The Bias knob does real work rather than acting as a trimmer. According to Pedal of the Day, it "adjusts both the output character and the tonal balance of the pedal." At lower settings the tone leans toward a softer, vintage-style distortion; as the Bias is turned up, the pedal transforms into a more aggressive and cutting fuzz1. In practice that gives one pedal a range from a blunt overdrive-adjacent voice to a full fuzz, without touching the guitar's volume knob.
Pedal of the Day's summary of the pedal was favorable on presentation as well as tone: "Three knobs, cool graphics and killer tones"1.
How it compares
Germanium fuzz is a crowded field, and the Bias control is what sets the TolRed's layout apart. Other recent germanium fuzzes take different approaches1:
| Pedal | Approach |
|---|---|
| TolRed Pedal Germanium Fuzz | Tone Bender MK2 redesign with added Bias control1 |
| Chase Tone Red Stardust Germanium Fuzz | NOS Allen Bradley carbon resistors, trapezoidal enclosure3 |
| Benson Amps Germanium Fuzz | Fuzz pedal built by Benson Amps4 |
| ThorpyFX Hanami Germanium Fuzz | NOS germanium transistors plus one NOS germanium diode5 |
| Red Noise Germanium Stone Blender | Tone Bender style multi-clipping design6 |
| Catalinbread Fuzzrite Germanium | Recreates a vintage Mosrite fuzz7 |
| Hartman Pedals Vintage Germanium Fuzz | Fuzz control ranging "from slightly buzzed to all-out hammered," with an LED indicator8 |
| Tex Mex Effects Crushed Velvet Germanium Fuzz Pedal | Vintage style fuzz with a bass switch and external bias control9 |
The closest relative in that company is the Tex Mex Crushed Velvet, which also puts bias adjustment in the player's hands, though as an external control rather than a panel knob9. The Hartman takes the opposite route of a single wide-range fuzz control8. For more on the effect type itself, see Fuzz Pedals, and for the brighter, tighter end of the clipping family, Distortion Pedals and Overdrive Pedals.
Germanium transistor pedals are typically more sensitive to temperature and transistor grading than silicon designs, which is why makers lean on NOS (new old stock) parts and bias adjustments. The TolRed's Bias knob exists precisely to let the player dial the circuit back into its sweet spot1.
