The Tubesteader Gainlord is a high-voltage, 12AX7 tube preamp built into a compact die-cast aluminum pedal enclosure, voiced after classic British stacks of the Plexi and JCM800 kind12. It is a dual-channel design: one lower-gain channel and one higher-gain channel, each with its own control set, giving what Delicious Audio calls "two distinct voices for the price of one"1. Premier Guitar describes it as built on real high-voltage tube circuitry, all in a compact pedal format3.
What it is and what it does
The Gainlord sits in the preamp pedal family rather than being a simple overdrive pedal. Its two channels are voiced after two eras of the same British amplifier lineage: a Blue Plexi channel and a Red JCM800 channel24. Each channel carries its own Volume, Treble, Mid, Bass, Gain and Bright switch2.
Delicious Audio describes the two voices in playing terms. The low-gain channel:
"serves up that sweet spot of open, gritty breakup..."1
while the high-gain channel is:
Flip to the high-gain channel and the character changes: Tubesteader describes it as tighter and more aggressive, with cutting bite that still cleans up when you roll back your guitar's volume1. A Bright switch on each channel adds presence where it counts1.
Guitar Pedal X's reviewer Stefan Karlsson heard the same split, characterizing the Plexi channel as "beautifully punchy, and chunky / beefy, with quite a bit of bass in the core signal," and the JCM800 channel as "more focused and searing, exactly as you would expect"2.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Volume, Treble, Mid, Bass, Gain | Full control set, one set per channel2 |
| Bright switch (each channel) | Adds presence; on the high-gain channel it can also provide a subtle gain boost3 |
| Tone Cut switch | Selects preamp mode or front-of-amp overdrive mode3 |
| Tone Bypass switch | Bypasses the tone stack for the Direct Out, on the side of the pedal2 |
The Bright switch is worth a second look for gain-staging: Premier Guitar notes that on the high-gain channel it can act as a subtle gain boost, and Delicious Audio adds that the high-gain channel "even works as a subtle boost" in its own right13.
Power and connections
The Gainlord runs on 12V DC at 500mA, through a 2.1mm center-negative barrel connector12. Its rear panel carries a TS In, a TS Out, and a Mini Remote Switch Port for the remote footswitch2.
A 500mA draw at 12V rules out batteries and most compact single-pedal supplies. The pedal needs a 12V output rated for at least 500mA; Guitar Pedal X notes a Cioks power supply as the ideal pairing2.
The remote switch port is what makes the two channels practical on a live board: rather than bending down to a toggle, you change channels from a remote footswitch. Guitar Pedal X reviewed the Gainlord together with Tubesteader's FS-2L remote switch, and a later writeup notes the FS-2L delivered a third channel on the Gainlord 224.
History and design
The Gainlord was designed by Tubesteader's Olly Balan, and it continues a line of tube preamp pedals from the Canadian builder. Guitar Pedal X places it as the successor to the Vox AC30-style Tubesteader ROY, calling the Gainlord "the even more instantly satisfying Plexi and JCM800" follow-up2. Earlier entries in the builder's range include the Orange-voiced Sunkeeper preamp, the Beekeeper and the D-style LIGHTKEEPER V2.
Tubesteader built the Gainlord around classic British stacks, the amps the maker says defined decades of hard rock, with two distinct voices in one pedal: a Blue Plexi channel and a Red JCM800 channel14. Guitar Pedal X noted the circuit's lineage, observing that after Tubesteader's Vox AC30 style Roy, the Plexi and JCM800 voicings felt like a natural follow-up, and the pedal went on to take Gold as the site's number one overdrive of the year2. In that year-end verdict, the reviewer wrote that the Gainlord delivered the most satisfaction of the bronze contenders, in a very close run against the Fuzz Fields overall4.
What reviewers said
Guitar Pedal X's year-end verdict was unambiguous:
"#1 GOLD : Tubesteader Gainlord"5
In the site's overall "best of the best" roundup across all pedal types, the Gainlord placed among the bronze contenders, with Stefan Karlsson writing4:
"overall I think I derived the most satisfaction from the Gainlord, while it was a very close run thing in the end"4
That roundup lists the Gainlord 2 at $349, with Plexi and JCM800 channels, its FS-2L Remote Switch delivering a third channel4.
Guitar Pedal X's review also documented preferred settings for both channels, with the Blue Plexi channel set around Volume, Treble and Gain at 3 o'clock, Mid at 2 o'clock, Bass at noon and Bright off, and the Red JCM800 channel run slightly hotter on Mid and Gain2. The same review recorded the practical details a board builder cares about: a die-cast aluminum enclosure measuring 4.7" x 5.7" (120mm x 145mm) with a height of 2.75" (70mm) including the tube protectors, and a weight of 1.6 lb (800 g)2.

Questions
Can the Tubesteader Gainlord be used as a preamp into a power amp?
Yes. With the Tone Cut switch in its full-output preamp mode, the Gainlord is designed to drive power amps or cab simulators directly. Flip the switch the other way and it drops to a lower-level overdrive mode with scooped high-mids, voiced for sitting in front of a normal guitar amp.
What does the Tone Cut switch do on the Gainlord?
It selects between two operating modes. One is a full-output preamp mode for feeding power amps or cab simulators. The other is a lower-level overdrive mode with scooped high-mids, intended for use in front of an amplifier rather than as the whole preamp stage.
Does the Gainlord need a 12V power supply?
Yes. It runs on 12V DC with a 500mA current draw, through a 2.1mm barrel connector with center-negative polarity. That draw is well beyond what a 9V pedal supply or a battery can deliver, so it needs a 12V supply rated for at least 500mA.
Can I switch Gainlord channels remotely?
Yes. The pedal has a Mini Remote Switch Port on its rear panel for a remote footswitch, and Guitar Pedal X reviewed it together with Tubesteader's FS-2L remote switch. A later writeup notes the FS-2L can also deliver a third channel.
