The Universal Audio Flow Vintage Tremolo is a compact tremolo pedal from Universal Audio that puts three flavors of tube-era tremolo in one box, each running through an emulated tube preamp. Universal Audio describes it as giving you "the warm, complex sounds of a tube preamp," in this case from early and mid-'60s American combo amps, and says the pedal evolved from its flagship Astra Modulation Machine1.

The pedal is currently listed by the maker as limited availability, while supplies last1.

Three tremolo modes: Dharma, 65 and Square

The Flow's core idea is three distinct tremolo circuits in one pedal, each modeled on a different tube-era source. Universal Audio names them Dharma, 65 and Square1:

ModeCharacterWhat UA says it does
DharmaHarmonic tremoloThe "chewy throb of early '60s American 'brown' amps," with volume fluctuation and phase shifting, aimed at vintage soul, surf and Uni-Vibe textures1
65Round, sine waveAn "exhaustive end-to-end emulation of a classic 1965 American tube amp's optical tremolo circuit"1
SquareChoppier, square waveSquare waveforms built from UA's own virtual optical photocell, for modern pop and R&B through blues and indie rock1

Gearnews described the same three modes as "three tube-based tremolo flavors (harmonic Dharma, smooth '65-style sine, and hard square-wave chop), each paired with an emulated preamp circuit and a handy volume boost"2. When the pedal was announced in October 2023, Gearnews framed the range as early Fender-style harmonic tremolo, a later '65-style round tremolo and square wave trem-tones3.

For a player, the practical difference is texture. Dharma is the harmonic tremolo mode, which UA associates with Uni-Vibe textures. The 65 mode is the round, sine wave pulse most players picture when they think of amp tremolo. Square is the choppier, square wave option1.

Tremolo with an emulated tube preamp

What separates the Flow from a basic tremolo circuit is the preamp modeling in each mode. Universal Audio says the pedal gives you a "perfectly captured tube preamp for fat, three-dimensional tremolo tones," drawn from early and mid-'60s American combos1. Gearnews called this "studio-grade modeling" brought to the tremolo conversation2.

The Volume control carries what UA calls "make up gain," so you can boost the tremolo effect rather than lose level against it, and the maker suggests syncing your trem with tap tempo and adding boost effects with the Volume control1.

"UA's Flow is an exceptional value tremolo that also has harmonic and two amplitude modes, super versatile and dead easy"
That Pedal Show, on the Flow and the Jam Pedals Harmonious Monk4

That Pedal Show's write-up grouped the Flow's three modes as one harmonic and two amplitude tremolos, and found it both versatile and simple to use4.

Power and connections

The Flow is a compact UAFX pedal with a single footswitch, and Universal Audio's power requirements are specific1:

  • Voltage: Isolated 9V DC, center negative1
  • Current: 250 mA minimum for compact single-footswitch UAFX pedals (full-sized two-footswitch UAFX pedals require 400 mA)1
  • Connector: 2.1 x 5.5 mm barrel, the same as standard Boss connectors; the power supply is sold separately1

The isolated 9V DC, center negative, 250 mA requirement rules out a battery, and the maker's call for an isolated supply means a shared daisy chain is not recommended. Budget for a proper pedalboard power supply.

Connections are 1/4" unbalanced TS jacks, with a maximum input level of 12.2 dBu and a maximum output level of 12.1 dBu1. The USB Type-C port handles registration and firmware updates via computer1.

Bypass, Bluetooth and firmware

The Flow's bypass is switchable between true and buffered (trails) operation, so you can match it to the rest of your chain1. Gearnews highlighted this in its tremolo buying guide: "Tap tempo and selectable true or buffered bypass make it easy to integrate into modern boards without sacrificing feel"2.

Universal Audio says dual footswitch UAFX pedals have Bluetooth for control via the UAFX Control mobile app, downloadable from the Apple App Store1. Firmware updates work through a computer: connect the pedal with a USB-C cable to a compatible machine and run the UA Connect application1. Registration can be done through either the UA Connect desktop app or the UAFX Control mobile app1.

Where it came from

Universal Audio positions the Flow as having evolved from the Astra Modulation Machine, the company's flagship modulation pedal, bringing three of its tube-driven tremolo flavors down to a compact format1. The Flow was announced in October 2023 as one of the additions to the UAFX compact pedal series, alongside the Brigade Chorus and the LA-6A compressor, offering what Gearnews called three flavors of vintage tube-driven tremolo3.

Questions

Does the UAFX Flow have tap tempo?

Yes. Universal Audio gives the Flow onboard tap tempo for syncing trem effects, and the Volume control adds make up gain so you can boost the effect in the mix. Reviewers have noted that tap tempo plus switchable bypass makes it easy to fit into a modern pedalboard.

Is the UAFX Flow true bypass?

It is switchable. The Flow offers true or buffered bypass, which Universal Audio also describes as a true/trails bypass option. You can choose whichever suits the rest of your signal chain, and the setting can be changed from the pedal.

How do you update the firmware on a UAFX Flow?

Connect the pedal to a compatible computer with a USB-C cable and run the UA Connect application, which handles firmware updates. The USB Type-C port is also used for registering the pedal. You can register through the UA Connect desktop app or the UAFX Control mobile app.

Does the UAFX Flow have Bluetooth?

Yes. Universal Audio says dual footswitch UAFX pedals have Bluetooth for control via the UAFX Control mobile app, available from the Apple App Store. The Flow is a compact single footswitch pedal, so check the app support for your specific unit.

Is the UAFX Flow discontinued?

Universal Audio lists the Flow Vintage Tremolo as limited availability, while supplies last. That is short of an official discontinued label, but it means stock is not guaranteed, so a player wanting one may need to look around for remaining units.
