The Valeton Coral Amp is a mini digital amp modeling and preamp stompbox from Valeton. It packs 16 carefully selected vintage and modern amplifier types, ranging from clean to high gain, into a small aluminum-alloy die cast enclosure, and Valeton describes it as a quality amp modeling/preamp pedal that delivers great tone with a low noise level1. RockBoard's PedalPedia entry classifies it as a preamp with cab sim, overdrive and distortion functions2.

The pedal is discontinued. Valeton's own product page carries the "Discontinued" label, so it is no longer in production and is mostly found secondhand1.

What the Coral Amp does

The Coral Amp is a preamp pedal that models complete amplifiers rather than a single gain stage. Its 16 amp types span vintage and modern designs across the whole gain range, so a player can dial in a clean platform, a crunchy edge or a high-gain lead voice from one box1. Because it is digital, each amp type is a modeled circuit rather than an analog clipping stage of the kind found in a dedicated overdrive or distortion pedal.

RockBoard's PedalPedia entry lists the pedal's functions as preamp, cab sim, overdrive and distortion, which places it alongside dedicated speaker simulation pedals as a tool for going straight to a mixer or interface2.

Bypass and buffering

The Coral Amp uses a buffer bypass rather than true bypass. Valeton says its "special design buffer bypass circuit keeps your sound pristine"1. For a player, that means the pedal always passes signal through its buffer when bypassed, rather than hard-wiring the input to the output. This is worth knowing when placing it on a board alongside true bypass pedals, and it is covered in more detail on the buffer pedals type page.

Not every Coral pedal took this approach. The first-generation Coral Mod, Coral Echo and Coral Verb all used true bypass footswitches, while the second-generation Coral Mod II, Coral Echo II and Coral Verb II, like the Coral Amp, moved to buffer bypass circuits345678.

Power and hardware

The Coral Amp runs on DC 9V and draws 200mA1. That is a substantial draw for a mini pedal, closer to what a digital multi-effects unit pulls than what a simple analog boost pedal needs, so it is worth checking that a power supply's 9V output can deliver at least that much current.

The enclosure is an aluminum-alloy die cast casing that Valeton says withstands wear and tear, and the pedal measures 93.5mm deep, 42mm wide and 52mm high, weighing 150g1. That footprint is small enough to sit in a tight corner of a pedalboard.

The discontinued Coral series

The Coral Amp was one pedal in a whole series of compact Coral units from Valeton, and the entire line has now been discontinued1. The series covered most of the effect families a small board needs:

The Coral Cab is the closest companion to the Coral Amp for players feeding a mixer or recording interface: Valeton describes it as a professional IR cabinet simulator system featuring 28 legendary guitar and bass cabinets, with GT/BASS channel and A/B group switching9. Like the Coral Amp, it is discontinued.

Every pedal in the Coral series listed above is discontinued, including the second-generation units. Replacement parts, manuals and warranty support may be limited to what Valeton still hosts on its site.

The manual

The English manual for the Coral Amp is available as a PDF from Valeton, version V01, linked through RockBoard's PedalPedia entry for the pedal2. Manuals for other Coral pedals, such as the Coral Echo and Coral Mod, are also still hosted on Valeton's site, which can help a secondhand buyer confirm controls and settings1415.

Questions

How many amp types does the Valeton Coral Amp have?

The Coral Amp offers 16 carefully selected vintage and modern amplifier types, ranging from clean to high gain. Valeton describes it as a quality amp modeling and preamp pedal in a mini digital stompbox format, so a player can move between amp characters from one small enclosure.

Is the Valeton Coral Amp still made?

No. Valeton lists the Coral Amp as discontinued, and the same applies to the rest of the Coral series, including the Coral Mod, Coral Echo, Coral Verb, Coral Tuner, Coral Cab, Coral Looper and the second-generation Coral Mod II, Coral Echo II and Coral Verb II. Units can still be found on the secondhand market.

Does the Coral Amp use buffer bypass or true bypass?

The Coral Amp uses a buffer bypass rather than true bypass. Valeton says its special design buffer bypass circuit keeps your sound pristine. This differs from some other Coral pedals, such as the original Coral Mod, Coral Echo and Coral Verb, which use true bypass footswitches.

What power does the Valeton Coral Amp need?

The Coral Amp runs on DC 9V power and draws 200mA. That current draw is on the higher side for a compact pedal, so it is worth making sure a power supply can deliver enough current on its 9V output before building it into a board.

Does the Coral Amp include a cab sim?

The Coral Amp is listed as a preamp with cab sim, overdrive and distortion functions. Valeton also made a separate pedal in the same series, the Coral Cab, a professional IR cabinet simulator system with 28 guitar and bass cabinets, though that pedal is also discontinued.

Where can I find the Valeton Coral Amp manual?

The English manual for the Coral Amp is available as a PDF from Valeton, linked through RockBoard's PedalPedia entry for the pedal. It is version V01 of the English manual, so it covers the pedal as originally released.
