The Valeton Surge EP-2 Mini is a compact 2-in-1 mini pedal that works as both a volume pedal and an expression pedal. Valeton describes it as "a flexible 2-in-1 mini pedal that offers both volume and expression functionality," and lists it as a passive volume and expression pedal from the company's Surge series12. Because it is passive, it needs no battery and no power adapter, which makes it a simple addition to any board: plug in two cables and it is ready to go123.
What it does
The pedal covers two jobs in one small footprint. In volume mode it acts as a simple volume foot controller for swells and quick mutes. In expression mode it sends control signals to an effects unit, for example to sweep a parameter on a multi-effects pedal. RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the circuit type as analog1, and Valeton describes the EP-2 as a passive vol/expression pedal2.
Power and practicality
The passive design is the headline feature for most players. Valeton states that the pedal "works without battery or power adapter"2, and RockBoard's listing repeats that its passive design means no need for a battery or power adapter1. In a February 2026 buying guide, Gearnews's Julian Schmauch called it "an ultra-compact, passive expression and volume pedal that requires no power"3. For a crowded pedalboard, that means no current draw and no extra power supply output used.
Build and what reviewers said
Valeton's product page describes the EP-2 as having a lightweight casing2, and Gearnews describes the housing as plastic3. The same review offers a balanced view of how that build feels underfoot:
"The plastic housing and small sweep range may make the foot control feel less smooth"
On the positive side, Gearnews notes that reviewers generally appreciate the pedal's lightweight and small size, finding that it functions well as either an expression controller or a simple volume foot controller, and that it suits tight rigs and occasional performances3.
Price
Gearnews listed the EP-2 Mini at $33.00 USD as of 2026-02-02, alongside a UK price of £30.00 and a European price of 35.00 euros3.

Questions
Does the Valeton Surge EP-2 Mini need a battery or power supply?
No. The EP-2 Mini is a passive pedal, which means it works without a battery or a power adapter. Valeton describes it as a passive volume and expression pedal, and the maker notes that its compact size means there is no need for extra batteries or a power adapter. That also means one less power connection to plan for on a pedalboard.
Is the Valeton EP-2 Mini analog or digital?
RockBoard's PedalPedia lists the circuit type as analog. Because the pedal is passive and needs no power, it simply passes your signal through mechanically as you rock the treadle, rather than processing it digitally.
