The Van Weelden Royal Overdrive is an analog overdrive pedal built the way an amplifier preamp is built, made by Van Weelden and designed by Peter Van Weelden, a designer who specialises in Dumble-styled amps, notably the Twinkleland, and can count Joe Bonamassa among his customers1. It is promoted as a "Dumble-in-a-box", and Van Weelden describes it as "a true Dumble like tone in a box that has enough options that it can get a great sound with any guitar or amplifier", working across gain modes, bright options and midrange boosts with passive single coils or active humbuckers12.

MusicRadar's reviewer Trevor Curwen heard it a little differently: "This pedal is being promoted as a 'Dumble-in-a box' and, while certain Dumble-style characteristics are in there, there's" also, in his description, more than a bit of Brit Marshall-style flavor in the circuit lineage2. Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson has called it "the long-since defunct Van Wealden Royal Overdrive (Mick Taylor favourite) which featured 6 of those skirted knobs", placing it among the Dumble-style pedals players chase3. It also appeared on That Pedal Show's roundup of seven of the best D-style pedals, in a demo loaned by Andertons Music4.

At 650mA1, the Royal Overdrive draws far more current than a typical overdrive. It will not run from a battery or a daisy-chain output, and it needs a power supply outlet rated for that draw.

The controls and switches

The Royal Overdrive carries six skirted knobs3 laid out like an amp's front panel. MusicRadar's review describes the layout: the Gain knob works in conjunction with the Master knob to respectively dial in the drive and set the level of boost you send to your amp, while the rest of the knobs are the same Presence, Bass, Middle and Treble controls you'd find on a guitar amp2. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio describes the same arrangement as "a four-band EQ of Bass, Middle, Treble and Presence with a three-way Bright switch to set your color"6.

ControlWhat it does
GainDials in the drive, working with the Master knob2
MasterSets the level of boost sent to your amp2
Bass, Middle, Treble, PresenceFour-band EQ, the same controls you'd find on a guitar amp2
A/B toggleFirst of two toggles working in tandem, offering A and B modes2
Bright toggleSecond toggle, offering three Bright settings; together with the A/B toggle that gives six options to pre-shape the tonal balance to work with any amp2
Gain Boost toggleA toggle switch for a more saturated sound2

The pedal is wired like an amplifier preamp rather than a traditional distortion circuit, which is where the extra control set comes from: instead of using a traditional distortion circuit and adding extra pots and components for more control, Van Weelden treats it as a complete solid-state guitar preamp with a set of features designed to work with any amp21.

The Mid Boost footswitch

Alongside the main footswitch there is a second one. MusicRadar found the pedal particularly convincing "if you step on the Mid Boost footswitch, which is naturally set for rhythm to lead transitions"2. Between the different gain modes, bright options and midrange boosts, RockBoard's PedalPedia says you will always have a great sound1. For players who use it as a foundation rather than a solo effect, Curwen's overall verdict was that "this is one excellent 'always on' pedal that offers a classy tonal foundation, whatever your rig"2.

Designed by Peter Van Weelden

Peter Van Weelden specialises in Dumble-styled amps, notably the Twinkleland, and can number Joe Bonamassa among his customers2. The Royal Overdrive carries that same Dumble-style approach into pedal form, and a demo by John Nathan Cordy is available on the maker's PedalPedia page1.

Price and where it sits

Guitar World lists the Royal Overdrive at $749 in the US, with a UK price of £4995; MusicRadar's review puts it at nearly £500 in the UK2. That places it among the more expensive Dumble-style overdrives, a category that also includes pedals covered in Delicious Audio's roundup of the best Dumble-style pedals6. Questions

Does the Van Weelden Royal Overdrive sound like a Dumble?

It is promoted as a Dumble-in-a-box, and Van Weelden describes it as a true Dumble-like tone in a box with enough options to get a great sound with any guitar or amplifier. MusicRadar's reviewer, Trevor Curwen, found that while certain Dumble-style characteristics are in there, the pedal also carries more than a bit of Brit Marshall-style flavor. So the Dumble DNA is there, but it is not a pure Dumble clone.

What power supply does the Royal Overdrive need?

It runs on 9V DC, center negative, like most pedals, but it draws 650mA according to Van Weelden's PedalPedia listing. That is well beyond what a standard daisy-chain output or most pedalboard power supplies' individual outputs deliver, so it needs its own high-current outlet on a suitable power supply.

What does the Mid Boost footswitch do on the Royal Overdrive?

The Mid Boost footswitch is set up for rhythm to lead transitions. Stepping on it lifts the midrange for soloing, and MusicRadar's reviewer noted it naturally adds sustain as you move from rhythm parts to leads. It works alongside the pedal's gain modes and Bright options rather than replacing them.

Is the Royal Overdrive analog?

Yes. Van Weelden's PedalPedia listing gives the circuit type as analog. The pedal is built as a solid-state preamp-style circuit rather than a digital modeler, and it is wired like an amplifier preamp rather than a traditional distortion circuit.

How much is the Van Weelden Royal Overdrive?

Guitar World lists the Royal Overdrive at $749 in the US, with a UK price of £499. MusicRadar's review describes it as costing nearly £500 in the UK, which is consistent with that figure. It sits at the upper end of the overdrive pedal market.
