The Walrus Audio Eons Five-State Fuzz is a fuzz pedal that puts five different clipping configurations on one Mode knob, then adds a Voltage knob that feeds the circuit anywhere from 3 to 18 volts. Walrus describes it as "a five-state fuzz capable of massively thick sounds ready to test the limits of any amp's grill cloth," with vintage-inspired sounds running "from the stages of Woodstock to chaotic three-chord punk rock"1. MusicRadar reported it out now in September 2022, priced at $229 in the US2.
The two knobs work together. Walrus says the Eons has "tons of gain on tap and a wealth of fuzz sounds with the combo of the mode and voltage knobs," and encourages players to "experiment with the Voltage and Mode knobs for nearly endless styles of fuzz tones"1.
One fuzz, five clipping states
The heart of the pedal is a five-position rotary Mode knob. Each position changes how the circuit clips your signal, which is what shapes the character of the fuzz. Walrus Audio lists these configurations1:
| Mode | Clipping | Character |
|---|---|---|
| I | Silicon | Traditional fuzz, well rounded with a huge sound; compressed and smooth |
| III | Germanium | A feel of "what if a distortion and fuzz had a kid?"; crunchy and dynamic |
| IV | LED diodes | Slight high-end cut; dynamically dark |
| V | Hard clipping silicon transistors with LED and silicon soft clipping diodes | Compressed, loud, and angry; the rowdiest of the modes |
MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley described Mode 1 similarly as "a soft-clipping silicon fuzz in Mode 1, ready and capable for all those big-sounding, compressed fuzz sounds"2. The germanium Mode III sits in the middle of the range as the crunchier, more dynamic option, while Mode V stacks hard transistor clipping with soft diode clipping for the most aggressive voice.
The Voltage knob: 3V to 18V
The control marked with a lightning bolt is the Voltage knob, and it is what sets the Eons apart from a standard five-mode fuzz. It adjusts the voltage going into the pedal's circuit between 3 and 18 volts1.
- Up to 18 volts: Walrus says cranking the Voltage knob gives "massive, open fuzz sounds"1.
- Down to 3 volts: Starving the circuit produces "spatty, gated fuzz," the sputtering, dying-battery texture many players associate with vintage units456.
Because the Voltage knob changes how the circuit behaves on top of which clipping configuration the Mode knob has selected, the two controls multiply each other: each of the five modes can be pushed toward open and huge or pulled toward gated and broken-up16.
Controls and EQ
Alongside the Mode and Voltage knobs, the Eons carries Bass and Treble knobs. Walrus says these "boost and cut the Eons' EQ... for tight control over the fuzz tone"1, so you can tame a dark mode or add low-end weight without reaching for a separate EQ pedal.
Power and bypass
The Eons runs on 9V DC, center negative, with a minimum current draw of 100mA, and it is true bypass1.
Walrus Audio recommends an isolated power supply for all of its pedals and does not recommend daisy chain supplies. No power supply is included with the Eons, so plan on a dedicated isolated output1.
At 100mA minimum, the Eons draws more current than many analog fuzz pedals, which is worth noting if you are budgeting outputs on a power brick15.
Where it came from
The Eons arrived in late 2022. MusicRadar reported it out now on September 27, 2022, priced at £235 in the UK, €269 in the EU, and $229 in the US2. It sits in Walrus Audio's overdrive, fuzz and distortion range6, alongside fuzzes like the Walrus Audio Jupiter and the tube-driven Walrus Audio Silt Harmonic Fuzz that followed it.
The standard Eons comes in a sandy tan enclosure with red, cream and black ink, with artwork of a stoic four-horned Markhor goat illustrated by Adam Forster1. It is covered by Walrus Audio's limited lifetime warranty1.
Versions and pricing
Walrus Audio sells the standard Eons at $249.991. Two other versions exist:
- Blemished units: Cosmetic-only flaws such as scratches or dents in the finish, sold at $212.493.
- Onyx Edition: A limited version from Walrus Audio's Black Friday limited series, made in collaboration with Onyx Coffee Labs as part of the Onyx Series54. It carries the same five-state fuzz circuit and the same power requirements5. Walrus Audio lists it as sold out5.
The Onyx Edition is sold out at Walrus Audio, so it is only available on the secondhand market. The standard Eons remains in the maker's range15.

Questions
What is the difference between the Walrus Eons modes?
The Mode knob is a five-position rotary switch that selects between five clipping configurations. Mode I is silicon clipping for a well rounded, compressed and smooth traditional fuzz. Mode III uses germanium clipping that Walrus describes as crunchy and dynamic. Mode IV uses LED clipping diodes for a dynamically dark sound, and Mode V combines hard clipping silicon transistors with LED and silicon soft clipping diodes for the loudest, most aggressive option.
What does the lightning bolt knob do on the Walrus Eons?
The lightning bolt knob is the Voltage control. It adjusts the voltage feeding the pedal's circuit between 3 and 18 volts. Turned up, it gives massive, open fuzz sounds; turned down toward 3 volts, it starves the circuit for spatty, gated fuzz textures. Combined with the Mode knob it opens up a wide range of fuzz tones.
Can the Walrus Eons run on a daisy chain power supply?
Walrus Audio recommends an isolated power supply for all of its pedals and does not recommend daisy chain supplies for the Eons. The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, with a minimum of 100mA, and no power supply is included in the box, so you need to supply your own.
Is the Walrus Eons true bypass?
Yes. Walrus Audio lists the Eons Five-State Fuzz as true bypass, so when the pedal is disengaged your signal passes through without buffering or coloration.
What is the Walrus Eons Onyx Edition?
The Onyx Edition is a limited version of the Eons released as part of Walrus Audio's Black Friday limited series, made in collaboration with Onyx Coffee Labs. It is the same five-state fuzz circuit in a different finish. Walrus Audio lists the Onyx Edition as sold out.
