The Eons Five-State Fuzz - Onyx Edition is a limited version of Walrus Audio's five-state fuzz pedal, released as part of the maker's Black Friday Limited Series in collaboration with Onyx Coffee Labs1. Like the standard Eons Five-State Fuzz, it puts five different clipping configurations on one rotary knob, and adds a Voltage knob that sweeps the circuit between 3 and 18 volts for everything from gated, starved fuzz to big, open fuzz sounds1. Walrus Audio describes it as "a five-state fuzz capable of massively thick sounds ready to test the limits of any amp's grill cloth"1.

The Onyx Edition is sold out at the maker's own page1. The standard Eons remains the same circuit in a different finish, so the two pages cover the same controls and behavior.

Five clipping modes in one fuzz

The core of the Eons is a five-position Mode knob that selects between clipping configurations1. Each mode changes the diodes and transistors doing the clipping, which changes both the feel and the frequency response of the fuzz.

ModeClippingCharacter (maker's description)
ISiliconTraditional fuzz, well rounded with a huge sound; compressed and smooth1
IISilicon with added bass boostBoosts the low end at the beginning of the circuit; compressed and crunchy1
IIIGermanium"What if a distortion and fuzz had a kid?"; crunchy and dynamic1
IVLED diodesSlight high-end cut; dynamically dark1
VHard-clipping silicon transistors plus LED and silicon soft clippingThe rowdiest mode; compressed, loud, and angry1

MusicRadar's Jonathan Horsley described Mode 1 as "a soft-clipping silicon fuzz in Mode 1, ready and capable for all those big-sounding, compressed fuzz sounds"3. Walrus Audio says the pedal covers "vintage-inspired sounds emanating from the stages of Woodstock to chaotic three-chord punk rock"1.

Controls: the Voltage knob and EQ

Alongside the Mode knob, the Eons carries a Voltage knob, marked with a lightning bolt, a Gain control, a Volume control, and active Bass and Treble knobs13.

  • Voltage (lightning bolt): adjusts the voltage into the circuit from 3 to 18 volts. Turned down, the circuit is starved for "spatty, gated fuzz"; turned up toward 18 volts, it produces "massive, open fuzz sounds"1.
  • Bass and Treble: active boost and cut EQ for tight control over the fuzz tone4.
  • Gain and Volume: set the amount of fuzz and the output level3.

The Voltage knob is the feature that sets the Eons apart from a single-voice fuzz. Because it changes the voltage the circuit actually sees, the same Mode setting can go from a sputtering, dying-battery texture to a full, open fuzz without touching anything else. Walrus Audio says the pedal has "tons of gain on tap and a wealth of fuzz sounds with the combo of the mode and voltage knobs"4.

Power and bypass

The Eons runs on 9V DC, center negative, with a minimum current draw of 100mA1. MusicRadar's launch coverage advised players to "just feed it a minimum of 100mA via a 9V DC pedalboard power supply"3.

Walrus Audio recommends an isolated power supply for all of its pedals and does not recommend daisy chain supplies. No power supply is included with the pedal1.

The pedal uses true bypass switching, so it leaves the signal chain untouched when disengaged1. The circuit is analog2.

Where it came from

The standard Eons Five-State Fuzz arrived in late 2022, and MusicRadar reported it as the third pedal in Walrus Audio's Five-State series of multi-voiced dirt pedals, "following in the hoof prints of the Eras high-gain distortion and the Ages overdrive"3. The Onyx Edition followed as a limited run in the Black Friday Limited Series, a collaboration with Onyx Coffee Labs1.

The Onyx Edition shares its enclosure size and artwork with the standard pedal: a sandy tan finish with red, cream and black ink, featuring a four-horned Markhor goat illustrated by Adam Forster1. It sits in Walrus Audio's Onyx Series alongside the maker's other limited collaborations2.

The Onyx Edition versus the standard Eons

The Onyx Edition is a variant of the Eons Five-State Fuzz rather than a different circuit2. The differences that matter to a player:

  • Availability: the Onyx Edition is sold out at the maker1; the standard Eons is the ongoing product.
  • Circuit and controls: the same five Mode positions, the same 3 to 18 volt Voltage knob, and the same EQ, gain and volume controls14.
  • Finish: the Onyx Edition carries the Black Friday limited-series treatment tied to the Onyx Coffee Labs collaboration1.

Players comparing fuzzes in the Walrus Audio range can also look at the Silt Harmonic Fuzz, a tube-based design, or the Jupiter Multi-Clip Fuzz V2, another multi-clip fuzz from the same maker.

Questions

What does the voltage knob on the Eons do?

The Voltage knob, marked with a lightning bolt, adjusts the voltage feeding the pedal's circuit between 3 and 18 volts. At the low end you get spatty, gated fuzz textures; cranked toward 18 volts the fuzz becomes massive and open. It works together with the Mode knob to shape the overall fuzz character.

What is the difference between the five modes on the Walrus Eons?

Mode I is silicon clipping, a traditional, compressed and smooth fuzz. Mode II adds a bass boost at the start of the circuit for a compressed, crunchy sound. Mode III uses germanium clipping, described as crunchy and dynamic. Mode IV uses LED clipping diodes with a slight high-end cut, dynamically dark. Mode V combines hard-clipping silicon transistors with LED and silicon soft clipping diodes for the loudest, most aggressive setting.

Is the Eons Onyx Edition still available?

No. The Onyx Edition was a limited run in Walrus Audio's Black Friday Limited Series, made in collaboration with Onyx Coffee Labs, and the maker's product page lists it as sold out. The standard Eons Five-State Fuzz is a separate product.

Does the Walrus Eons need an isolated power supply?

Walrus Audio recommends an isolated power supply for all of its pedals and does not recommend daisy chain power supplies. The pedal runs on 9V DC, center negative, with a minimum of 100mA, and no power supply is included in the box.

Is the Eons Five-State Fuzz analog?

Yes. The Eons Five-State Fuzz is an analog fuzz pedal with true bypass switching, listed by RockBoard's PedalPedia with an analog circuit type.
