Zoom MS-200D+

DistortionDigital

The Zoom MS-200D+ is a MultiStomp pedal for guitarists: a single compact digital stompbox holding 200 drives and distortions, which Zoom calls the most ever in one stompbox1. Where a normal drive pedal gives you one circuit, this one covers overdrives, distortions, fuzz, boosts and preamps, plus EQ, a noise gate and a tuner, and it can run two effects at once2. Guitar Pedal X described it at launch as "a compact digital gain workstation with 200 built-in distortions and drives"3.

The pedal was announced at NAMM in January 2024 as part of Zoom's second-generation MultiStomp line, following the MS-50G+4. Its digital signal chain uses 24-bit 128x oversampling A/D and D/A conversion with 32-bit signal processing3. Reviewers found the MultiStomp format easy to get around: as MusicRadar put it, "In terms of ease of use, the MS-200D+ scores very highly."42

The effect list spans overdrive, fuzz, distortion, preamp and boost types, color-coded into categories so you can find a voicing quickly while scrolling12. A few of Zoom's own named effects give a flavor of the range: Ray Drive, an overdrive Zoom says "has an abundance of overtones"; Nebula Distortion, which "features a smooth warm sound"; Bleed Fuzz, whose "heavy sound... is ideal for single note phrases"; and Devil Muff Fuzz, with "thunderous" low frequencies Zoom describes as "demonic"1.

The digital engine converts at 24-bit with 128x oversampling on both A/D and D/A, and processes the signal at 32-bit3. Two effects can run simultaneously, and Effect Routing lets you chain them in series, parallel, or alternate, the last of which lets you tap between two complete tones quickly1. MusicRadar's review lists 240 preset slots for storing what you build2.

The controls, Cross Key switches and display

The front panel is built around four Cross Key switches arranged around a central footswitch, plus four encoder knobs. Zoom says the Cross Key switches "allow you to instantly switch between effects with a tap of your foot"1, and they handle Memory, Scroll, Add, Delete, Library and Menu functions3. The four encoder knobs adjust and tweak the parameters of each drive and distortion5; MusicRadar's reviewer noted they are pushable and set in a slight dip in the pedal to keep them out of the way of your foot2.

The dot-matrix LCD changes color to distinguish each drive and distortion type while scrolling, and it has two brightness modes62. The same backlight doubles as visual feedback for the onboard chromatic tuner, which supports all standard guitar tunings as well as open and drop tunings6. The enclosure is a metal frame Zoom says is "designed to withstand anything you throw at it"1.

MusicRadar's reviewer found the whole surface easy to get around: "In terms of ease of use, the MS-200D+ scores very highly"2.

Power: AA batteries, USB-C or 9V adapter

The MS-200D+ runs on 2 AA batteries, or via USB-C or AC power5. With a 9V DC adapter it draws 500mA7, which is worth noting if you run a shared supply: that is a substantial draw for a single-stompbox board, and it rules out a typical low-current daisy chain. Reported approximate battery run times are 14 hours on lithium AAs, 7 hours on alkaline and 6.5 hours on NiMH3.

Second-generation MultiStomp and Guitar Lab updates

The MS-200D+ is the second-generation MultiStomp, announced at NAMM 2024 alongside the MS-50G+, which was unveiled a couple of months earlier and shares a similar design4. Where the MS-50G+ is a general-purpose MultiStomp covering many effect types, the MS-200D+ concentrates the platform on gain: all 200 of its sounds are drive-family effects rather than a spread of delays and modulations.

Zoom extends the pedal after purchase through Guitar Lab, its desktop software, which connects over USB-C. In November 2024 Guitar Lab delivered 10 additional effects to the MS-200D+1. For comparison, the same update path brought 27 additional effects to the MS-50G+8, so the MS-200D+ library can grow beyond what shipped in the box.

The 200-effect count is the shipped figure. Guitar Lab added 10 more effects in November 20241, and the maker's page also describes the onboard set as 152 originals plus 36 emulations1, while MusicRadar's launch report gave the split as 164 originals and 36 emulations4.

What reviewers said

MusicRadar reviewed the pedal and found it strong on usability, scoring it "very highly" for ease of use and noting it is easy to figure out without manuals2. The review also confirmed the core feature set: 200 drives, 240 preset slots, two simultaneous effects, parallel and series routing, the onboard tuner, color-coded categories and the two screen brightness modes2. At launch, Guitar Pedal X called it "a compelling 200 flavours compact gain workstation" and highlighted the single compact stompbox design as the appeal: a board's worth of gain options in one footswitch-sized box3.

Questions

How many effects does the Zoom MS-200D+ have?

It carries 200 drives and distortions in total. Zoom describes these as 152 all-new originals plus 36 emulations of classic tones, covering overdrives, distortions, boosts, fuzz and more. Guitar Lab added 10 further effects in November 2024, and the pedal also includes EQ, a noise gate and a tuner.

Can the Zoom MS-200D+ run on batteries?

Yes. It runs on 2 AA batteries, or via USB-C or AC power. With a 9V adapter it draws 500mA. Reported approximate battery times are 14 hours on lithium cells, 7 hours on alkaline and 6.5 hours on NiMH.

Can you stack drives on the MS-200D+?

Yes. The pedal runs two effects simultaneously and offers series, parallel or alternate routing, so you can chain two drives or quickly switch between two complete tones. There are 240 preset slots for storing the combinations.

Does the Zoom MS-200D+ have a tuner?

Yes, it has an onboard chromatic tuner that uses the color backlight for visual feedback. It supports all standard guitar tunings as well as open and drop tunings.

How do you add effects to the MS-200D+ with Guitar Lab?

Zoom's Guitar Lab software delivers additional effects to the pedal over its USB-C connection. In November 2024 Zoom added 10 new effects this way, expanding the drive and distortion lineup beyond the sounds the pedal shipped with.
