The ZVEX Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid is a fuzz pedal from ZVEX: a version of the company's Fuzz Factory circuit built into a vertical, pedalboard-friendly enclosure, with a hybrid transistor setup that pairs germanium and silicon parts. ZVEX lists it at $289.00 and, as of October 2026, shows it as sold out1.

A more aggressive Fuzz Factory

The Hybrid is one of several transistor variations on the Fuzz Factory circuit, which Guitar Pedal X describes as "the classic modded and feature-extended Fuzz Face"3. Where the standard pedal uses germanium transistors and the Silicon Fuzz Factory uses carefully selected silicon ones4, the Hybrid mixes the two. Delicious Audio reported that the 2018 Vertical Hybrid used a NOS 1960s 2N404 germanium transistor alongside a modern PNP silicon transistor, and quoted the description of the result:

"which, when combined, provide a more aggressive tone than our standard Fuzz Factory model."

That aggression sits on top of the Fuzz Factory's usual range. Delicious Audio described the pedal as packed with knobs that let you control everything from tight, radically fuzzy sounds that gate off instantly, to inter-modulating oscillations, shortwave radio sounds, ripping Velcro fuzz and octave-like fuzz2. The vertical Hybrid also added an on/off LED and a DC power jack, features earlier hand-painted Fuzz Factory builds lacked2.

ZVEX's own listing for the fire-distressed Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid gives a different transistor set: gt308 and mps751, built with odds-n-ends parts1. The two sources disagree on the transistors, which fits how ZVEX's hand-assembled runs work: each build uses the parts on the bench at the time, so the Hybrid name covers a germanium-plus-silicon approach rather than one fixed pair.

Hybrid versus Germanium and Silicon

The vertical line launched with a Germanium version in 2018, and Guitar Pedal X notes that Silicon and Hybrid versions followed3. Each addresses a different player:

VersionTransistorsCharacter, as described in the press
Fuzz Factory Vertical (Germanium)GermaniumThe classic Fuzz Factory sound3
Vertical Fuzz Factory SiliconSiliconPreserves the classic germanium texture while adding temperature stabilization4
Vertical HybridGermanium plus siliconMore aggressive than the standard Fuzz Factory2

The silicon version exists because germanium circuits drift with heat. Gearnews reported that designer Zachary Vex built it to eliminate the temperature-related madness of germanium while keeping the original's texture5. The Hybrid goes the other way: it keeps a germanium transistor in the circuit and leans into a harder-edged result2.

Availability and the limited-run question

The Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid is sold out at ZVEX1, and it is not alone: the Vertical Fuzz Factory EVFF01, the Silicon Fuzz Factory, the Fat Fuzz Factory and the Reverse Fuzz Factory builds on ZVEX's site are all listed as sold out as of October 202616. The EVFF01 is a one-off with engraved artwork by Lisa McGrath (LJM) and arcade knobs6, which gives a sense of how ZVEX's hand-assembled vertical runs are produced: small batches or single pedals, each with its own artwork.

Delicious Audio called the 2018 Vertical Hybrid a limited edition outright2, and Gearnews described the vertical models generally as a pedalboard-friendly limited run7. For a player shopping now, that means finding one second-hand rather than new from the maker.

What reviewers said

The Fuzz Factory line has a long track record with the press. Reviewers have credited the original pedal's quality build8. ZVex describes the vertical Hybrid edition as producing "a more aggressive tone than our standard Fuzz Factory model," and the maker says its knobs let you control everything from tight, radically fuzzy sounds that gate off instantly to inter-modulating oscillations, shortwave radio sounds, ripping Velcro and octave-like fuzz2. The vertical editions were designed by Zachary Vex, who has also worked to eliminate the temperature-related instability of germanium transistors in the Silicon version54.

The Vertical Hybrid's reputation rests on the Fuzz Factory circuit it carries and on Delicious Audio's description of its more aggressive hybrid character2.

Questions

What transistors are in the ZVEX Vertical Hybrid Fuzz Factory?

It depends on which run. The 2018 Vertical Hybrid Fuzz Factory that Delicious Audio covered used a NOS 1960s 2N404 germanium transistor paired with a modern PNP silicon transistor. ZVEX's own listing for the fire-distressed Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid describes it as made with gt308 and mps751 transistors, so the two sources give different transistor sets for pedals sold under the Hybrid name.

Is the Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid still available?

No. ZVEX's own product page lists the Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid as sold out, at a list price of $289.00. Other one-off Fuzz Factory builds on the ZVEX site, including the Vertical Fuzz Factory EVFF01, are also shown as sold out, so these hand-assembled runs generally disappear once the units are gone.

What is the difference between the Hybrid and Germanium Fuzz Factory?

The Germanium Fuzz Factory uses germanium transistors throughout, while the Hybrid pairs a germanium transistor with a silicon one. According to Delicious Audio, the combination in the Hybrid provides a more aggressive tone than the standard Fuzz Factory model. The all-silicon version, by contrast, was designed to preserve the classic germanium texture while adding temperature stability.

Where is the ZVEX Vertical Fuzz Factory made?

ZVEX states that the Vertical Fuzz Factory Hybrid is hand-assembled in Minneapolis. The company is based there and builds its hand-painted and engraved pedals in-house, which is part of why these vertical runs tend to be small and sell out.

Is the Vertical Hybrid Fuzz Factory a limited edition?

Yes. Delicious Audio described the 2018 Vertical Hybrid Fuzz Factory as a limited edition pedal, and ZVEX's own listing for the fire-distressed Hybrid shows a single sold-out unit with artwork by Thomas Rehbein. Guitar Pedal X notes that Silicon and Hybrid versions of the Fuzz Factory were released alongside the vertical format.
