6 pedals on Tonebox

Tom Quayle is a modern fusion player1 who took up the guitar at the age of 152 and later worked as a reviewer for Guitar Interactive3. His best known gear connection is a signature pedal: the Wampler Tom Quayle Signature Dual Fusion, a dual overdrive he designed and built with Wampler Pedals4.

The Dual Fusion's origin goes back to Quayle's own pedalboard. In mid 2011 he contacted Wampler about their pedals and, after some discussion, bought a Euphoria and a Paisley Drive5. By early 2012, when Wampler first met him, he was already using those two overdrives stacked together to get the tones he required6.

The sound: modern fusion

MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen describes the Dual Fusion as designed for modern fusion player Tom Quayle, putting two overdrives, each with its own input and output, into one box1. The concept was born at NAMM, with Tom's input, and took just over 12 months to be realized5.

Quayle's own verdict on the prototype, quoted by MusicRadar at launch, was about its feel:

"The major improvement is just how amp-like the response is. In that department I have never played a pedal that is as good as this."

Overdrives: Euphoria and Paisley Drive into the Dual Fusion

The Dual Fusion carries two independent circuits based on, but completely modified from, the Euphoria and Paisley Drive6. MusicRadar described the recipe at launch: take those two circuits, highlight the most usable tones, modify them extensively to ensure they stack perfectly, then put them in the same box5.

The switching is what sets it apart from running two separate overdrive pedals. In Pete Thorn's demo for the pedal, he showed that you can run the Euphoria side into the Paisley side, or the Paisley into the Euphoria, either way, using the pedal's switching arrangement. The pedal also has dual inputs and outputs for each channel, so it can be used with a pedal switcher in a rack-based rig, switching each channel in and out independently via a MIDI foot pedal8.

That routing arrangement proved influential at Wampler: the later Paisley Deluxe took a cue from the Dual Fusion's signal routing, allowing each side to run as an individual pedal for switcher-based rigs9. In a Guitar.com interview with Brian Wampler, Dave Hunter noted that the Tom Quayle Dual Fusion was among the pedals that upped Wampler's feature quotient considerably10.

Delay: the Laney BCC-TDE

Quayle also uses Laney's BCC-SPIRAL11 and the BCC-TDE delay, and his own words on the TDE appear on Laney's product page:

"I am amazed at how intuitive and easy this delay unit is to use (no manual required!) and the sound quality is off the charts, especially the incredible analogue tape delays and modulation"
