Hologram Electronics

9 pedals on Tonebox

Hologram Electronics is a Nashville effects maker founded in 2015 by Jason Campbell and Ryan Schaefer. The two come from engineering and software design backgrounds, but they are also players, and that combination shows in what the company builds: pedals that do not just color your sound but rearrange and reinterpret it1. The press has described their designs as working as well with any instrument that has a line out, synths included, and has categorized them under the synth pedal umbrella2.

The company's range covers four main pedals: the Chroma Console, the Microcosm, the Infinite Jets and the Dream Sequence3.

The story

Guitar World's Chris Gill reports that Hologram Electronics was founded in 2015 by Jason Campbell and Ryan Schaefer, "who have backgrounds in engineering and software design but are als" players themselves1. Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio adds that the two engineers "put also a lot attention on an aspect almost entirely overlooked by the commu" pedal industry, which is how their designs stand apart2.

The company's first widely noticed release was the Dream Sequence, which Pedal of the Day recalled arriving "a couple years back" before 2019 as "a pedal... unlike any we had all seen before"45. The team around Ryan Schaefer was already sending review units out personally by 2016, when Pedal of the Day thanked "Ryan and everyone at Hologram Electronics for sending this guy over for us to check out"6.

What Hologram makes

Each pedal in the range takes a different approach to reshaping sound.

PedalWhat it is
MicrocosmA granular effects pedal that rearranges and reinterprets your sound using a variety of techniques7
Infinite JetsA multi-voice synth pedal that re-synthesizes notes and chords into new sounds8
Dream SequenceA programmable rhythm and octave pedal9
Chroma ConsoleA flexible multi-effect pedal inspired by vintage studio hardware10

Microcosm

Hologram describes the Microcosm as "a granular effects pedal that rearranges and reinterprets your sound in new and exciting ways using a varie" of granular techniques7. It carries an expression input, mappable to many controls11.

Infinite Jets

The Infinite Jets is the company's "re-synthesizer." Hologram describes it as "a multi-voice synth pedal that resynthesizes individual notes/chords into new sounds using two independ" sampling channels12. The two channels of sampling, A and B, sustain notes indefinitely, and they can be triggered by your playing automatically or via footswitches12. Pedal of the Day noted that "you can even plug in an external expression pedal, which is mappable to many of the controls"4.

Dream Sequence

The Dream Sequence is a programmable rhythm and octave pedal9, with an expression pedal input mappable to many controls13. Pedal of the Day called it "one of the hottest pedals out at the moment" with "a huge range of sonic options" when it reviewed the pedal in 20166.

Chroma Console

The Chroma Console, announced for pre-order at $399 in November 2023, is a flexible multi-effect pedal that Hologram says takes "inspiration from the eccentricity, grit, and lively instabili" of vintage gear1014. Gearnews described it as "an effects pedal that offers a vast range of tone colour and shaping possibilities"15.

Guitar.com's Jason Mays found it easy to live with:

"it's probably the most easy-to-use and idiot-proof effects pedal I've ever had the pleasure of getting to grips with"14

Jason Mays, Guitar.com14

He credited the interface: color-coded knobs per effect, plus status lights and soft-touch buttons to select effects, with no menu diving, so "everything you need to know about what's happening with the pedal is determined by the position of the colour-coded knob"14. His overall verdict was that "the Chroma truly stands out as one of the most musical and creative pedals I've played in a good while," and that reordering its modules creates unexpected and unique sounds14.

Synths, expression and control

A few practical points run across the range:

  • Hologram's pedals work with any instrument that has a line out, synths included2
  • The Microcosm, Dream Sequence and Infinite Jets each take an expression pedal, mappable to many controls11134
  • The Infinite Jets' sampling channels can be triggered automatically by your playing or via footswitches12
