Boss announced the EX-4 Effects Expander on September 24, 2026, according to a company announcement dated Los Angeles, CA, September 24, 20261. The unit is a compact multi-effects pedal in the multi-effects category, and Boss describes it as a utility pedal for pedalboards21.

The EX-4 carries 120 Boss effect types, covering overdrive and distortion, modulation, delay and reverb, plus bass-tuned effects and Boss favorites such as Slow Gear and Slicer314. Players can run up to four effects at once, including multiple instances of the same effect345. Utility blocks, among them foot volume, two noise suppressors, send/return and divider/mixer, can be placed anywhere in the chain, and a global EQ shapes the overall sound214. Gear Suite supplies pre-made settings for each effect type, and user settings can be saved14.

The interface is a full-color 2.4-inch LCD with four dedicated FX buttons, a Select knob, a Type/Value knob and three parameter knobs156. Two multi-function footswitches can be assigned per memory or system-wide, with a color LED system around them14. Routing options include series, parallel and wet/dry45. Four audio jacks provide mono or stereo operation, and two can serve as an effects loop for external pedals14. Two footswitches or an expression pedal can be connected, and there are low-profile TRS MIDI in and out jacks14. Sonicstate lists 128 preset memories for guitar and bass plus 128 user memories4; Gearnews gives 128 user memories and 128 factory presets5. Guitar Pedal X lists the dimensions as 117 x 138 mm and current draw as 300 mA6.

"Offering a large selection of classic BOSS effects in a space-saving design, there's no better utility pedal than the EX-4. It's an essential toolbox."
