KittycasterFX has launched the KittycasterFX Mohair, a high-gain fuzz and distortion pedal that pairs a Muff-style circuit with a footswitchable Rangemaster-style booster in front1. MusicRadar reported the launch on April 30, 2024, and Delicious Audio published its own item on October 17, 202421.
The Mohair uses five silicon transistors in a circuit of discrete, through-hole components, and it is designed and built in Portland, Oregon, in a wedge-style enclosure1. Delicious Audio describes it as a modern take on the classic muff sound, not a direct clone of any specific design2. MusicRadar reports that KittycasterFX founder Howard Gee, formerly of Catalinbread, is not a fan of the four-transistor Muff-style circuit, and that his version came close to the Ram's Head Big Muff style1.
There are two footswitches, one for the pedal and one for the boost, plus two oversized dials for Volume and Sustain and controls for Tone and Range1. Tone sets frequency response in both boosted and non-boosted modes; Range works only in Boost mode, where the LED lights red, and acts as a variable high-pass filter, with the sound thickening as it turns clockwise1. Delicious Audio describes the Range control as adjusting boost thickness, from tight riffs to sustaining notes2.
The price is $299, and MusicRadar reported it available now1.
