Nordvang Custom announces Mid-Air overdrive pedal

Nordvang Custom announced the Mid-Air on April 20, 2023, the three-year anniversary of its trio of dual overdrive pedals, Gravity, '83 Drive and Wingman. The maker said the most requested single version of its dual overdrive circuits was the TS10, "so that is of course where we started out"¹.

The Mid-Air is a overdrive pedal built around the TS10 circuit, which the maker describes as staying true to the original and delivering classic mid-pushed tones. On the front are drive, tone and level knobs, plus an "air" knob that controls the cutoff frequency of the overdrive section and pushes the mid-hump to higher frequencies. A "lows" toggle switch offers two additional levels of low-end boost. Inside, a 4-way dipswitch adjusts the tone of the TS side, including a clean output boost, an open clipping setting that removes the clipping diodes, and symmetrical or asymmetrical clipping diode options¹.

The boost circuit is pre-drive and can be used independently of the main drive circuit. The maker calls it a "clean" boost built around an op-amp, with the boost knob controlling gain from unity at minimum to 18dB at maximum. A three-position "eq" toggle switch offers full frequency, low-mids and high-mids voicings¹.

The pedal uses a switchable buffer: an NPN transistor input buffer with an input impedance of 510K Ohm followed by an op-amp output buffer stage with an output impedance of 100 Ohm. A dipswitch inside selects buffered or true bypass, and the pedal switches automatically to true bypass if power fails. The maker lists Vishay metal film resistors, WIMA capacitors, Taiway switches and Pure-Tone jacks¹.
