The Now We Are Ghosts is a digital reverb pedal from Alexander Pedals, designed by Matthew Farrow as what the maker calls "a synthesizer out of a reverb"1. Where a conventional reverb pedal places your guitar in a space, this one uses the reverb voice itself as the sound source, layering modulated, stereo textures that Guitar Pedal X described as "ghostly, synthy, stereo reverb textures"2. It carries a list price of $399.99 and is currently listed as sold out1.

The pedal is currently listed as Sold Out on the maker's product page, at a list price of $399.991.

A synthesizer made out of a reverb

The concept is the pedal's reason for existing. As Farrow puts it on the product page:

"Now We Are Ghosts started as an attempt to create a synthesizer out of a reverb."

Rather than adding ambience behind your dry signal, the reverb voice takes the lead, with modulation and stereo spread shaping the texture. Guitar Pedal X frames it as a pedal that "channels modulated reverb into a synthesizer format, using a reverb voice in place" of a traditional oscillator2. For a player, that puts it closer in spirit to a synth pedal than to a plate or spring emulation, while still being built around the controls a reverb player expects.

Stereo is central to the design. Spread is adjustable, input can be mono or stereo via TRS with summing supported, and output can be mono or stereo through either TRS or dual TS cables12.

The controls and footswitches

Alexander Pedals states there are no menus or secondary controls: everything is accessible from the face of the pedal1. The knob set covers the reverb basics plus one texture control:

ControlWhat it does
DecaySets reverb length3
BlendBalances dry and wet signal3
LevelSets output level3
DirtAdds saturation and instability for degraded textures3

Three footswitches handle the rest2:

  • Swell / Tap footswitch for swell effects and tapping tempo
  • Preset 1-4 footswitch for the four instant presets
  • Bypass footswitch

Presets and control run deeper than the face suggests. The pedal offers four instant presets, a WYSIWYG live mode, and 32 total presets via MIDI, with full MIDI support over TRS or USB making every control accessible remotely1. That puts it in the same company as other MIDI pedals for players running programmed rigs.

Power needs planning. The pedal requires an isolated DC power supply, DC 9V only, drawing 250mA or greater1. There is no battery option, and the current draw is beyond what many small daisy-chain supplies deliver per outlet.

History and design

Farrow worked on the pedal for more than a year, showing early prototypes in early 2025 and going through three name changes and three graphic designs before settling on the final version1. The enclosure follows the form factor of the Alexander Pedals Forget-Me-Not, chosen for its many knobs and switches to allow real-time control2. As Farrow told Guitar Pedal X:

"I've leveraged the form factor of Forget-Me-Not with lots of knobs and switches to facilitate real-time control"

Farrow leveraged the form factor of the Forget-Me-Not, with lots of knobs and switches to facilitate real-time control, as the basis for the Now We Are Ghosts2.

What reviewers said

Coverage at announcement was positive. Guitar Pedal X's reviewer wrote:

"I am quietly impressed by this Ghostly Reverb, and the demos go a long way towards proving the concept."

The same coverage noted the Forget-Me-Not format and the $399.99 MAP/RRP1, while Delicious Audio highlighted the Dirt control's saturated, degraded textures as the distinguishing feature beyond the standard Decay, Blend and Level controls3.

Questions

Does Now We Are Ghosts have trails?

Yes. It uses a buffered bypass with a choice of fading or forever trails, so the reverb can either die away naturally when you switch it off or sustain indefinitely. Four instant presets, a WYSIWYG live mode and 32 total presets via MIDI are also on board.

Does the Now We Are Ghosts need an isolated power supply?

Yes. Alexander Pedals specifies an isolated DC power supply, DC 9V only, with 250mA or greater current. There is no battery option, and the 250mA draw rules out most small daisy-chain supplies.

Is Now We Are Ghosts stereo?

Yes. It accepts mono or stereo input via TRS with input summing, and outputs mono or stereo using either TRS or dual TS cables. Stereo spread is adjustable, and Guitar Pedal X describes the result as ghostly, synthy, stereo reverb textures.

Who did the artwork on Now We Are Ghosts?

The artwork is by Conrad Keely. Alexander Pedals credits him on the product page, and the pedal went through three graphic designs during its more than a year of development before the final version appeared.

Does it have hidden menus?

No. Alexander Pedals states there are no menus or secondary controls, and everything is accessible from the face of the pedal. Controls include Decay, Blend, Level and Dirt, plus three footswitches for swell, presets and bypass.
