The Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz is a limited-edition fuzz pedal built by Amptweaker in collaboration with bassist Tim Lefebvre, released in December 2019 for $2501. It is based on the germanium transistor circuitry of the Amptweaker Bass TightFuzz, tweaked to Lefebvre's tastes, with the headline feature that all knobs set straight up at 12 o'clock reproduce his "always on" tone12.

For a player, that means the pedal is voiced so its default position is a working sound rather than a starting point. Premier Guitar described the design intent plainly21:

"The Lefebvre TightFuzz fuzz is tweaked to give the user Tim's favorite setting when the knobs are all straight up."

Where it came from

The Lefebvre TightFuzz sits at the end of a family tree that started with the original Amptweaker Tight Fuzz, a combination silicon/germanium fuzz first released in 2012 and designed by James Brown3. That pedal carried several toggle switches, changing between silicon and germanium transistors, '60s/'70s EQ, and a sharp or smooth fuzz tone, with a tone stage Aion FX describes as "a heavily modified Big Muff-style tone control"3.

The line grew from there:

  • The TightFuzz Pro, announced in August 2015, added a 3-band EQ, dual-knob boost, octave-up effect, three effects loops, a noise gate and a hidden "More Fuzz" switch4.
  • The Jr. versions, including the TightFuzz Jr, shrank the circuit into a smaller, lower-priced format4.
  • The Lefebvre TightFuzz arrived in December 2019 as a limited edition voiced for one player12.

Amptweaker also has a history of small limited runs, including the BluesFuzz anniversary model, which grew out of a tweak session for the TightFuzz.

Controls and the Tight knob

The pedal carries Volume, Tone, Fuzz, Tight and Dry Low controls1. The Tight control is the feature the whole TightFuzz line is named for: Aion FX's circuit trace identifies it as a pre-gain bass cut, meaning it removes low-end content before the fuzz stages rather than after5. Guitar.com notes it is "handy when it comes to minimising the flabbiness that is common with fuzz-type effects"1.

ControlWhat it does
VolumeAdjusts output volume1
ToneEQ control, described as great for producing small tube amp-like tones1
FuzzSets fuzz amount, with an auto bias feature that makes low-gain tones easy to dial in1
TightPre-gain bass cut that tightens the fuzz attack15
Dry LowBlends in dry signal to make up for the low end distortion typically loses1

The auto bias feature on the Fuzz control comes straight from the wider TightFuzz line; Delicious Audio describes it on the TightFuzz JR as keeping "the sweet spot at hand, and is especially nice for cleaner tones"6.

The 'always on' setting

The pedal's core idea is the preset at its center. With every knob at 12 o'clock, the pedal recreates Lefebvre's "always on" setting1. From there, Premier Guitar notes that Fuzz kicked all the way up takes the pedal into heavier tones2. The pedal starts with the germanium output transistor, for what Premier Guitar calls "a warm amp like breakup," and is set for the '60s tone from the original Bass TightFuzz2.

Effects loop

The Lefebvre TightFuzz includes an effects loop with a Pre/Post switch, so other effects can sit either before or after the fuzz circuit inside the pedal1. This is an Amptweaker signature: the Pro series carries three effects loops4.

How it differs from the Bass TightFuzz

The Lefebvre TightFuzz is based on the Bass TightFuzz's germanium transistor circuitry and keeps its '60s tone, but it is tweaked to give the user access to Lefebvre's settings, and it adds the Dry Low blend knob to restore low end1. Vintage Guitar reviewed the original TightFuzz and Bass TightFuzz pair together in February 2014, noting both carry knobs for Volume, Tone, Fuzz and Tight7; the Dry Low knob and the 12 o'clock preset are what mark out the Lefebvre version.

Questions

What is Tim Lefebvre's 'always on' setting on the TightFuzz?

The Lefebvre TightFuzz is tweaked so that with every knob straight up at 12 o'clock, the pedal produces Tim Lefebvre's favorite setting, the tone he keeps on all the time. Kicking the Fuzz control all the way up takes it into heavier territory from that same baseline.

Does the Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz have an effects loop?

Yes. The pedal includes an effects loop with a Pre/Post switch, so other effects can be placed either before or after the fuzz circuit inside the pedal. This follows Amptweaker's habit of building loops into its pedals, which the larger Pro series takes further with three loops.

Is the Lefebvre TightFuzz a limited edition?

Yes. Amptweaker announced it in December 2019 as a limited-edition collaboration with bassist Tim Lefebvre, and it was available at launch for $250. Amptweaker has a history of limited runs, including the 49-piece BluesFuzz anniversary model.

What does the Tight knob do on a TightFuzz?

The Tight control is a pre-gain bass cut. Rolling it in removes low-end content before the fuzz stages, which tightens the attack and minimises the flabbiness that fuzz effects commonly add, especially useful for bass players or downtuned guitars.

How much does the Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz cost?

At its December 2019 release, the Lefebvre TightFuzz was available for $250. It was sold as a limited edition, so availability after the initial run depended on remaining stock.

What is the difference between the Lefebvre TightFuzz and the Bass TightFuzz?

The Lefebvre TightFuzz is based on the Bass TightFuzz's germanium transistor circuitry and keeps its '60s tone setting, but it is tweaked to Lefebvre's preferences and adds a Dry Low knob that blends in dry signal to restore low end lost to distortion.
