7 pedals on Tonebox

Tim Lefebvre is a bassist whose credits span David Bowie, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Donny McCaslin, Wayne Krantz, Rudder, Knower, Bryan Adams, Whose Hat Is This? and The Black Crowes12. He played bass on Bowie's album Blackstar3, and he is an Ampeg artist2. He is also one of the few bassists with two pedals carrying his name: the 3 Leaf Audio Octabvre octaver and the Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz fuzz pedal45.

Signature pedals: the Octabvre and the TightFuzz

The Octabvre is an octaver pedal from 3 Leaf Audio, and it gets its name from Lefebvre himself. Bass Musician Magazine's reviewer Jake Wolf described him as "one of the true pioneers in the modern movement of electric bass players seeking righteously synthy bass tones"4. The pedal came out of a direct collaboration: 3 Leaf's Spencer Doren sent Lefebvre a few stomp boxes, they got along immediately, and a few months later Doren started working on the design for the Octabvre4. It was designed around his playing needs, including a second footswitch that cuts the dry signal so the octaver effect can be used more effectively4.

The circuit follows a known blueprint. Wolf's review states the Octabvre "is based on the tonal blueprint of older Boss OC-2 octave pedals, which are widely regarded as the high water mark for processed sub-octave synth bass goodness for electric bass"4. When Premier Guitar reviewed the Octabvre Mini in 2023, its reviewer noted that "the pedal's namesake often uses a Precision-style bass" and tested it with a Nash P-style strung with Thomastik flatwounds10.

His other signature pedal is the Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz, a limited-edition fuzz introduced in 2019511. It starts from the Amptweaker Bass TightFuzz, keeping the Germanium output transistor for what Premier Guitar describes as a warm amp-like breakup, set for the 60's tone of the original5. Premier Guitar reports it is Lefebvre's "always on" tone, and that "sometimes he kicks the Fuzz all the way up for heavier tones"5. Guitar.com adds that having all the knobs at 12 o'clock recreates that always-on setting11.

Effects made for bass: blend knobs and true bypass

Asked in a Guitar World roundtable about bass effects, Lefebvre's advice was to use effects tailor-made for bass, and specifically:

  • Find pedals with blend knobs, so the clean bass tone is still represented
  • Shoot for effects that are true bypass, to protect the low end1

His own signature fuzz follows that thinking. The Lefebvre TightFuzz has special input circuitry that simulates a guitar, so active effects and pickups can be used in front of it, which Premier Guitar calls "very important for bass since many have onboard EQ"5. For players comparing options, this is the practical case for bass pedals over guitar designs: the clean low end stays in the signal and active basses behave predictably.

Lefebvre has also demonstrated this approach on camera for Dunlop, in a clip pairing the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe and Bass Envelope Filter to show the range of deep, expressive tones the two pedals produce together12.

Preamp, D.I. and the rest of the board

Lefebvre's pedalboard carries the Jad Freer Audio CAPO Tim Lefebvre Edition, a preamp and D.I. box that packs three parallel preamps into a pedalboard-friendly format: a clean preamp and two high-dynamics saturators, with an active 3-band EQ plus DEEP and BITE buttons, a loop section that can alternate with the preamp signal in Tim mode or run in series in Original mode, and two D.I. outputs7. Jad Freer Audio describes it as "a powerful preamp and D.I. capable of studio-grade clean sounds, harmonic saturations and everything in between"7. Lefebvre was the very first CAPO preamp user, owning serial number 0017.

Beyond his signature pedals, JAM Pedals lists the Red Muck Bass among the pedals he uses8, and he rates the Empress Effects Bass ParaEq, an EQ pedal9:

"It's an amazing pedal that shapes not only bass but anything you wanna seriously pinpoint frequencies with. 10/10."

Questions

What is the Octabvre pedal?

The 3 Leaf Audio Octabvre is an octaver pedal for bass, named after Tim Lefebvre and designed around his playing. It is based on the tonal blueprint of older Boss OC-2 octave pedals, and a second footswitch cuts the dry signal so the octave effect can be used more effectively. Bass Musician Magazine's reviewer called the Boss OC-2 circuit the high water mark for processed sub-octave synth bass tones.

What bass does Tim Lefebvre play?

Premier Guitar's reviewer notes that Lefebvre often uses a Precision-style bass, and tested the Octabvre Mini with a Nash P-style strung with Thomastik flatwounds on that basis.

What amps does Tim Lefebvre use?

He is an Ampeg artist, listed by Ampeg alongside Wayne Krantz, Rudder, Tedeschi Trucks Band, David Bowie, Knower, Bryan Adams, Whose Hat Is This? and The Black Crowes. His pedalboard carries the Jad Freer Audio CAPO Tim Lefebvre Edition, a preamp and D.I. box with three parallel preamps, which he describes as a godsend live.

Does Tim Lefebvre use a Red Muck fuzz?

Yes. JAM Pedals lists the Red Muck Bass among the pedals Tim Lefebvre uses. He also has his own signature fuzz, the Amptweaker Lefebvre TightFuzz, which he keeps as an always-on tone, sometimes turning the fuzz up for heavier tones.

Why use bass-specific pedals instead of guitar pedals?

Lefebvre's advice to bass players is to use effects tailor-made for bass, find pedals with blend knobs so the clean bass tone is still represented, and shoot for true bypass effects to protect the low end. His own signature pedals follow this thinking: the TightFuzz has input circuitry that simulates a guitar so active effects and pickups can be used in front.
