The AMT B1 is a JFET guitar preamp pedal from AMT Electronics, part of the company's Legend Amp series12. It is a preamp with amp and cab simulation features, built to deliver what AMT describes as superior high gain distortion of the kind found in the Bogner Sharp Channel Amplifier13. AMT characterizes the sound as "monstrous in tone, aggression, and provides massive amounts of gain. Thunderous lows, screaming highs, and scoopable mids"1.
What the B1 does
The B1 is a metal-oriented preamp: AMT's media center groups it under the heading "AMT Legend Series, Metal (B1 / E1 / P1)", alongside the AMT E1 and AMT P14. Its feature set, as listed by AMT, covers the stages of an amplifier chain in one box:
- Analog Preamp with Clean / Low gain / High gain modes2
- Compressor2
- Noise Gate (global setting)2
- Power Amp with 9 types2
- IR cabsim with 1 IR for both L/R channels per preset5
A 2015 demo video on AMT's media center, "B1, modern metal tone demo", also lists the Power Amp with 9 types among the pedal's features6.
The controls
The B1's knobs are the classic preamp layout: LEVEL, GAIN, LOW, MID, and HIGH1.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| LEVEL | Sets the pedal's output level |
| GAIN | Sets the amount of preamp distortion |
| LOW | Bass EQ |
| MID | Middle EQ |
| HIGH | Treble EQ |
On top of the knob controls, the analog preamp offers Clean, Low gain and High gain modes, and the power amp section offers nine types, so the pedal can be shaped from a clean platform through to a modern high gain voice2.
Outputs: amp or direct
The B1 carries two signal outputs, and which one you use depends on where the pedal sits in your setup1:
In practice, the Direct Amplifier Out feeds the front of a real amp, while the Cab Simulation Out carries the pedal's IR cab simulation, letting the B1 go straight into a mixer or audio interface without a speaker cabinet125.
Power and bypass
The B1 runs on a 9V battery or adapter. For an adapter, AMT recommends its own DC 12V/1.25A or DC 9V/0.85A unit1.
The Legend Amp Series preamps use passive true bypass circuitry, according to AMT Electronics, so the pedal is out of the signal path when bypassed1.
