The Ampli-Firebox is a compact stompbox from Atomic Amps that models tube amps and loads cabinet impulse responses (IRs, digital captures of real speaker cabinets). Atomic Amps calls it "the world's first tube amp modeling and cabinet impulse response IR loader in a compact stomp-box"1. It is a reduced version of the company's Amplifire, the high-end red amp emulator, and Delicious Audio's Paolo De Gregorio noted it "will provide almost all the features of the original (including reverbs and, of course, cab speaker emulations" at about half the cost2.

The original Ampli-Firebox is listed as sold out on Atomic Amps' product page1. The company's current offering in the line is the Ampli-Firebox MK II.

What it does

The Ampli-Firebox puts amp modeling and cabinet speaker emulation in a pedalboard-friendly format. De Gregorio described it as "a reduced version of Amplifire, the high end, red amp emulator"2, and noted that it keeps "almost all the features of the original (including reverbs and, of course, cab speaker emulations" while costing about half as much2.

What the pedal covers, according to the maker and the press that covered it:

  • Tube amp modeling1
  • Cabinet impulse response loading1
  • Reverb effects2
  • Cab speaker emulation2
  • Presets that work with the AmpliFIRE line of products1

MusicRadar describes the Ampli-Firebox as having "familiar amp controls"3, meaning the front panel is laid out the way a player expects an amp head to be.

Delicious Audio felt the format held up as a genuine pedal:

"we feel totally comfortable calling this a stompbox"

The Ampli-Firebox MK II

Atomic Amps followed the original with the Ampli-Firebox MK II, which the maker describes as "the follow-up to its original Ampli-Firebox, the world's first high-end amp modeler in a stompbox"5. The MK II adds new amp models5 and is positioned as "the perfect amp-modeling centerpiece to a guitarist's pedal board or standalone solution into" an amp, direct to front-of-house, or for recording6.

Where it sits among the alternatives

The original Ampli-Firebox is no longer available from Atomic Amps, which lists it as "SOLD OUT"1. Players looking at the wider family of speaker simulation pedals will find the Ampli-Firebox among them, as a compact stompbox that combines tube amp modeling with cabinet impulse response loading1.
