The Beetronics Royal Jelly OD/Fuzz is an overdrive and fuzz blender pedal that runs the two gain circuits in parallel rather than making you choose between them. Beetronics describes it as "an overdrive/fuzz blender like no other pedal," one that "can cover any ground from overdrive to fuzz, running two circuits in parallel and giving you the possibility of blending it or having them separately"1. Where a typical fuzz or overdrive pedal gives you one flavor, the Royal Jelly lets you dial in any mix of the two, keep your dry signal underneath, and store two blend presets you can switch between mid-song.

Beetronics calls the Royal Jelly "the first of its kind, blending overdrive and fuzz in a way no pedal had done beefore"2. It was developed by Filipe Pampuri in collaboration with Howard Davis, the circuit designer behind the Deluxe Memory Man2, and every unit is hand made in California3. The pedal is sold in limited edition runs and one-off Custom Shop finishes, and the maker's listings for it are currently sold out32.

Overdrive and fuzz in parallel, blended

The core idea of the Royal Jelly is that overdrive and fuzz are two separate circuits running side by side, and you decide how much of each reaches your amp. MusicRadar's Michael Astley-Brown described it as a pedal "which runs overdrive and fuzz circuits in parallel for blending or running separately"5. You can run pure overdrive, pure fuzz, or any blend of the two, and an adjustable dry mix keeps the tone tight and articulate under all that gain2.

The parallel design is what sets it apart from a stacked or cascaded approach. Instead of pushing a fuzz into an overdrive (or the reverse), the two voices coexist, so the dry signal and each circuit keep their own character. On guitar, Beetronics says the DRY control "is great to create unique clean tones with a fuzzy background"1, which is a sound a single-circuit pedal cannot easily make.

Pedal of the Day's review explains how the blend control behaves on each side of the pedal10:

"Each of these sides features an Overdrive/Fuzz control knob, with full OD to the left, Fuzz to the right, and a sweet blending of the two at numerous intervals along the way."10

The controls: Dry, Hi and Lo EQ, Buzz, Queen and King

The Royal Jelly's control set is built around the blend. Each channel carries its own overdrive/fuzz knob, and the EQ is shared: HI and LO controls give 10 dB of cut or boost each, which Beetronics says makes it possible to shape your tone in many different ways714. Gearnews described the same arrangement at launch as "each with +/- 10 dB of boost and cut Hi/Lo EQ" on the King and Queen channels11.

ControlWhat it does
Overdrive/Fuzz knobFull overdrive to the left, full fuzz to the right, blends in between, on each side10
DRYBlends in clean signal; on guitar, creates clean tones with a fuzzy background1
HI and LO EQ10 dB of cut/boost each, for shaping lows and highs741
BUZZ switchAdds a high-end boost to the fuzz for extra bite and presence3912
Queen and KingTwo presets of the overdrive/fuzz blend1314

The Buzz switch is the pedal's vintage fuzz accent. Beetronics says it "adds that nasty high end usually found on the vintage fuzz boxes to its fuzz circuit"14, or in the Custom Shop listing's words, it "adds a high-end boost to the fuzz for extra bite and presence"1439. Guitar.com's review, by Michael Watts, listed the pedal's three footswitches as "Channel selection, Buzz Off added gain and effect on/off footswitch"15.

Queen and King are the two blend presets. They are not digital presets; Beetronics describes them as "two customizable voicings"2 that offer two distinct overdrive/fuzz blends. The practical point, per the maker, is that the presets "allow you not only to have two different sounds on the fly, but also make for a very natural transition" between them, because the change mixes overdrive and fuzz levels rather than swapping pedals1. In a Sweetwater demo, Don Carr walked through the layout, noting that "the right foot switch is the bypass switch"16.

Power and connections

The Royal Jelly requires a 9V DC power supply with a center negative plug, and no power supply is included with the pedal6. There is no battery option in the maker's specifications, so it needs a spot on a pedalboard power supply. The pedal measures 6-1/8" x 5-1/16" x 2-3/4" and weighs 2 lbs (1 kg), with a package weight of 2.5 lbs (1.25 kg)1, so plan board space accordingly: it is a full-size enclosure, not a mini pedal.

Beetronics covers the pedal with a 14-day money back guarantee2. Returns in new condition in the original packaging get a full refund; the maker notes a worn unit or one missing accessories may instead carry a 15% restocking fee or store credit6.

Design, limited editions and Custom Shop units

Beetronics builds the Royal Jelly in small runs, and the finish is part of the appeal. Alongside the standard limited edition, the maker has sold named runs such as the Royal Jelly OD/Fuzz Limited Edition All Blue, the Royal Jelly OD/Fuzz Limited Edition "Memorial" (a 10-piece run), and The Blackbee Edition, each hand made in California and each now sold out3417.

Beyond the numbered limited editions there is a Custom Shop program producing one-off units, including the Royal Jelly Fuzz/OD Blender Custom Shop 420 edition, the Custom Shop Ouija Silver, and individually serialized pieces such as RJ2364, RJ2857, RJ3247 and the "Revenge of the Fuzz" RJ325791819. Custom Shop units carry the same circuit: parallel overdrive and fuzz, Queen and King presets, the two-band EQ, the Buzz switch and true bypass5137.

Pricing on the maker's store is listed in pounds sterling: the limited edition showed a regular price of £178.00 (with £223.00 shown as the sale price)1, while the Custom Shop 420 edition listed £270.00119. Both listings are sold out, so current availability is a matter of the next run or the secondhand market.

What reviewers said

Sweetwater published a demo video in which Don Carr presents the pedal as a collaboration between Beetronics and Howard Davis and walks through its controls, including the right footswitch as the bypass switch16.

Questions

Is the Beetronics Royal Jelly true bypass?

Yes. Beetronics states the Royal Jelly is true bypass, for a pure signal when the pedal is bypassed. The right footswitch is the bypass switch, with the other footswitches handling channel selection and the Buzz/gain function.

Who designed the Beetronics Royal Jelly?

Beetronics says the Royal Jelly was developed by Filipe Pampuri in collaboration with Howard Davis, the circuit designer behind the Deluxe Memory Man. A Sweetwater demo also describes the pedal as a collaboration between Beetronics and Howard Davis.

What do the Queen and King modes do?

Queen and King are two presets of the overdrive/fuzz blend, giving two distinct sounds you can switch between on the fly. Beetronics describes them as two customizable voicings rather than digital presets, and the transition between them is natural because it mixes overdrive and fuzz levels.

What does the Buzz switch do on the Royal Jelly?

The Buzz switch adds a high-end boost to the fuzz circuit for extra bite and presence. Beetronics describes it as adding the nasty high end usually found on vintage fuzz boxes.

Where is the Royal Jelly made?

Beetronics says every Royal Jelly is hand made in California. The company offers a 14-day money back guarantee on its pedals.
