Behringer VT911 Vintage Tube Overdrive

Overdrive

The Behringer VT911 Vintage Tube Overdrive is a compact overdrive pedal, an effect type covered in more detail at Overdrive Pedals. What set the VT911 apart from most overdrives was its circuit: it used an actual vacuum tube running at 9V, in a design the circuit-tracing site Guitar FX Layouts described as "quite nice and relatively simple"1. Tracing the board, the same source found an IC with a pinout matching the TL074, guessed against the original Coolaudio quad opamp, many SMD components, and a Behringer-labeled tube of unknown real brand1.

What is inside it

The pedal's gain stages are built around a quad opamp IC. When a builder traced the circuit for a DIY reproduction, the IC pinout was found to match the widely available TL074, since little published information exists about the original Coolaudio quad opamp Behringer fitted1. The original production board used many surface-mount components, and the tube itself carried a Behringer label with no obvious real brand behind it1.

The VT911 is a discontinued, secondhand-market pedal. Owners' reports of its sound come from individual builders and owners rather than the maker's own documentation.

What players reported

The fullest published account of the pedal in use comes from a builder who reproduced the circuit and reported on it in April 20131:

"Sounds really good in the lower half of the gain adjustment although flat out is quite a wild ride if your in the mood for that."
Guitar FX Layouts, builder's report on a modified build1

That report describes a pedal that responds strongly to picking dynamics and works best below maximum gain, with the full-gain setting described as a wild ride1. The same owner, writing about the original pedal, was measured in his verdict:

"really would not pay anything more than the 10 euros I paid for this. Not that it sounds bad, is just 'another' overdrive"
Guitar FX Layouts, owner of the original pedal1

The 10 euros there is what that owner paid secondhand, not a list price. His summary was that the pedal offered super cheap value for money and sound, but did not stand apart from other overdrives1.

Where it sits among Behringer's overdrives

The VT911 belongs to Behringer's earlier line of tube-based overdrives, at a time when the company was building pedals around real vacuum tubes rather than only solid-state circuits1. For other takes on the type, see Distortion Pedals and the Boss SD-1 vs Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer comparison.
