The Boss DD-8 is a digital delay pedal from Boss, released in 2019 as the replacement for the DD-7 in the compact series. Boss describes it as the most wide-ranging and feature-rich compact series delay the company has made, with eleven delay modes, a built-in looper, stereo inputs and outputs, and support for external footswitches or an expression pedal12. It arrived alongside the DD-3T, the two pedals replacing the DD-3 and DD-7 respectively and adding features such as tap tempo34.

Where a basic delay pedal gives you one or two repeat flavors, the DD-8 covers everything from a standard digital delay to pitch-shifted shimmer and glitch effects, plus a looper with unlimited overdubs. One reviewer went as far as calling it a miniature multi-effects engine rather than a simple delay4.

Eleven delay modes and a looper

The DD-8's eleven modes span what Boss calls delay colors from basic to exotic1. Three of the types were newly developed for this pedal: Warm, +RV, and GLT1. The full set as documented by Delicious Audio:

ModeWhat it does
StandardBasic digital delay
AnalogClassic analog BBD delay sound7
WarmNew type for softer echo tones8
+RVDigital delay with reverb added, blending the two in a dedicated Boss delay pedal for the first time27
GLTRhythmic delay creating glitchy machine-gun effects when the pedal switch is pressed7
ShimmerPitch-shifted delay for lush, shimmering textures7
WarpHolding the pedal switch increases feedback and level, allowing ambient swell effects79
LoopLoop recorder with overdub capability7

The GLT mode deserves a note of its own: pressing the pedal switch produces the machine-gun glitch effect, and the Feedback and Time knobs shape a wide variety of sounds from there7. Warp works differently, swelling the effect's level and feedback as you hold the footswitch9. Both modes were demonstrated on That Pedal Show, in an episode that also includes a chapter walking through the different modes in the DD-810.

The looper mode records up to 40 seconds in mono, or 20 seconds with stereo input, with unlimited overdub capability28. That makes the DD-8 usable as a standalone looping pedal for practice and layering, not just as an add-on to the delay.

A Carryover switch on the pedal sets whether delay trails continue or stop when you bypass the effect17. That is a practical choice: trails off gives clean, immediate cutoff, while trails on lets repeats fade naturally under your dry signal.

Boss also publishes suggested settings for using the DD-8 with other instruments. For acoustic guitar, the company suggests keeping Time between 300 and 400 ms, enough to add depth without overshadowing the original melody, and Feedback at 2 to 3 repeats so the delay fades gracefully11.

Stereo outputs and external control

The DD-8 has true stereo I/O with three selectable output modes1:

  • Independent: the default, providing linked parallel delays on the left and right channels7
  • Panning: ping-pong delay effects bouncing between outputs712
  • Wide Stereo: enhanced spatial depth112

External control is supported with two footswitches or an expression pedal1. Adding one or two footswitches unlocks more creative possibilities, including on-demand tap tempo, extended looper control, and a Twist effect13. Tap tempo is also available without anything extra: you can tap in tempos with the onboard pedal switch13, and up to 10 seconds of delay time is available when using the tap tempo function2.

The pedal comes in the usual tough Boss enclosure with the rubber footswitch setup14, and the sockets are Input A/B, Output A/B, and EXP In6.

History: from the DD-3 and DD-7 to the DD-8

The DD-8 is the end of a long line. The DD-3 appeared in 1986151 and was itself identical to the DD-2, with the name changed after a drastic price reduction that year16. The DD-3 offered 12.5 to 800 ms of delay9 and went through at least three distinct versions over its long production run17. It was later replaced by the DD-618, a pedal with four delay modes reaching maximum times of 80 ms, 300 ms, 800 ms, and 2600 ms respectively19.

The DD-7 followed in 2008, with the maximum delay time increased to 6.4 seconds2. When the DD-8 arrived in 2019, it took over from the previous-generation DD-7 as the most advanced delay in the compact series8, extending the maximum delay time to 10 seconds with tap tempo2.

A timeline of the compact series:

YearPedalDelay time
1986DD-312.5 to 800 ms915
2008DD-7Up to 6.4 seconds2
2019DD-8Up to 10 seconds with tap tempo2

At launch in 2019 the DD-8 sold for £140 street, approximately $17514. By January 2026 the listed price was $159.00 USD4.

What reviewers said

Reviewers have treated the DD-8 as more than a straightforward delay. In gearnews.com's best delay pedals guide, Julian Schmauch wrote that the DD-8 feels more like a miniature multi-effects engine4. George Loveridge, in a budget delay roundup, noted that this digital delay pedal is one of Boss's most extensive compact pedals, with 11 different types of delay and a looper function to work with5. Pedal of the Day highlighted the stereo output options, including the Independent, Wide Stereo, and Panning Delay choices12.

Questions

Does the Boss DD-8 run on a battery?

Yes. The DD-8 runs on one 9V battery or a 9V DC power supply, with the supply sold separately. Players who leave the pedal powered up on a board will usually want the supply, since a looper and long delay times draw more current than a battery comfortably delivers.

Is the Boss DD-8 true bypass?

Published sources disagree on this. GuitarPlayer's buying guide lists the DD-8's bypass as buffered, while a gearnews.com budget delay roundup describes it as a true bypass switch indicated via an LED. Boss's own product page does not state the bypass type, so treat this as unresolved.

What is the longest delay time on the DD-8?

Up to 10 seconds of delay time is available when using the tap tempo function, according to Boss's own history of its delay pedals. That is a step up from the DD-7, whose maximum delay time was 6.4 seconds.

How long can the DD-8 looper record?

The looper mode offers up to 40 seconds of recording time with mono input, or 20 seconds with stereo input, and unlimited overdub capability. Overdubs can be layered for as long as you like within that loop length.

Does the DD-8 have tap tempo?

Yes. You can tap in tempos with the onboard pedal switch, and adding one or two external footswitches unlocks on-demand tap tempo along with extended looper control and a Twist effect.

What does the GLT mode on the DD-8 do?

GLT is a newly developed delay mode that creates glitchy machine-gun effects when the pedal switch is pressed. Adjusting the Feedback and Time knobs yields a wide variety of sounds from the effect.
