"Boss Digital Delay" is not one pedal but the name players give to Boss's long-running family of digital delay pedals, a line that stretches from the early DSD-2 Digital Sampler/Delay through the compact DD-3, DD-5 and DD-6 to the current DD-8, DD-200 and DD-500123456. What they share is Boss's compact stompbox format and a digital engine producing clean, repeated delay, in contrast to Boss's own analog delay pedals such as the DM-2.
What a Boss Digital Delay does
A digital delay samples your guitar's signal and plays it back after a set time, giving repeats that stay close to the original tone. Boss has built versions of this idea for decades, and the design has stayed a live-playing favorite: the author of Tonebox's own notes put it plainly, writing "whenever I play live, I almost always return to a Boss Digital Delay"8.
Part of the reason players keep coming back to it is how it works on stage. As the same note puts it, "A Boss pedal is simply easy to stomp on"8, which is to say the footswitch is easy to hit accurately in the dark between songs and the controls are simple enough to adjust without thinking. That live-friendly layout, rather than any single feature, is what keeps the Boss Digital Delay on so many boards.

What reviewers say
The line has a strong reputation among players who use it live. A Premier Guitar State of the Stomp columnist wrote, "whenever I play live, I almost always return to a Boss Digital Delay"8, and explained why in practical terms: "A Boss pedal is simply easy to stomp on."8 That combination of simple footswitch operation and predictable behavior is the recurring theme across reviews of the individual models, from the DD-63 to the DD-54.
On That Pedal Show, the DD-500 came up in discussion of high-end delay pedals, where it was described simply as the "Boss DD-500 Digital Delay"12, sitting alongside boutique units as a serious option rather than a budget alternative.
The DD-200's 225mA current draw7 means it needs its own high-current output on a pedalboard power supply.
