The Boss OD-200 Hybrid Drive is an overdrive and distortion pedal from Boss, built on a hybrid analog/digital design. It packs 12 primary drive modes and 15 boost types into one enclosure, which Boss says delivers "any drive tone you can imagine"12. Guitar Pedal X counted roughly 180 permutations of drive and boost together3.

The "hybrid" in the name is the core idea: Boss brings analog and digital clipping circuits together in one pedal, aiming for what the maker calls its "advanced hybrid design"1. All pedals in the 200 series use 32-bit internal processing2, and Guitar Pedal X reports the OD-200 uses Boss MDP, the maker's fourth-generation DSP3.

Twelve drive types and fifteen boosts in one pedal

The OD-200's main dial selects from 12 drive types, and a separate boost section offers 15 more. Guitar Pedal X's review lists the boost types as Mid (mid/solo boost), CLn (clean/transparent boost), trb (treble/bright boost), plus ten of the main drive types usable as boosts: oVd, bLS, SCr, Cnt, Hdr, dSt, HdS, StK, FAt, MZn, MCr and FuZ3. That last group includes MZn, the MT-2 Metal Zone as a boost3.

The drive modes also map to classic Boss pedals. Guitar Pedal X lists OVERDRIVE as the equivalent of the Boss OD-13. MusicRadar described the pedal as having "200 overdrives from the stompbox legend packed in here" alongside its hybrid circuitry4.

Delicious Audio summed up the range as "a universe of expressive drive colors," noting enhanced definition, clarity and dynamic response in the X modes5.

"The list of features is as impressive as you can imagine and can be found at the bottom of this post, but what really counts for the BOSS OD-200 is its sound."

The controls and footswitches

The front panel keeps things simple. In Pete Thorn's demo video for the pedal, he walks through a level control and a drive control for the main drive sound, plus bass, metal and treble controls for the EQ6. Delicious Audio describes the same layout: dedicated controls to dial in gain and overall level for any selected mode, with wide-ranging low, mid and high EQ5.

ControlWhat it does
DriveSets gain for the selected drive mode6
LevelSets overall output level6
Bass, Metal, TrebleLow, mid and high EQ shaping6
Mode dialSelects one of the 12 drive types3
Boost sectionSelects one of the 15 boost types3

The two footswitches are multi-function. By default they control bypass, boost on/off and memory scrolling, and Boss says they can be reassigned to alternate functions1. Delicious Audio lists them as customizable for bypass, boost, memory selection and more5.

MIDI, expression and presets

The OD-200 stores setups in onboard memories for instant recall2. Like the other 200 series pedals, it supports external control via footswitches, an expression pedal, or MIDI2. Delicious Audio notes the MIDI I/O sits on mini TRS jacks, with the BMIDI-5-35 adaptor cable available separately5.

The boost can also run in series or parallel with the main mode. Boss says the boost circuit "can also be used in parallel with the main mode, enabling side-by-side blending for an unlimited range"1. Guitar Pedal X's reviewer, Stefan Karlsson, suggests one combination he liked: BROWN drive type plus BLUES boost in parallel mode, which he calls the JB-2 Angry Driver equivalent3.

Guitar Pedal X found one quirk worth knowing: when you cycle back to manual mode from a preset, the values you had dialed in on the boost section reset to their defaults3.

Part of the Boss 200 series

The OD-200 belongs to Boss's 200 series, which Premier Guitar covered at launch as bringing "next-level tone, feel, and flexibility to overdrive and distortion"7. Pedal of the Day notes the OD-200 followed in the footsteps of the DD-200 Digital Delay, another pedal in the series8. The series shares the same 32-bit internal processing and the same external control options across its pedals2.

Pedal of the Day also praised the enclosures across the range as ergonomic, comfortable and pedalboard-friendly8. The same reviewer flagged that the OD-200 rewards reading the manual, calling it "a manual reader"8.

What reviewers made of it

Guitar Pedal X's long-term review went deep on the mode list and the boost permutations, and Karlsson reported the pedal sits in his current chain, used supplementally rather than as a primary drive3. Delicious Audio pointed readers to the sound itself over the feature list5.

In his demo video, Pete Thorn highlighted the Stack Drive mode, calling it "a really really good sounding sort of a Marshall in a box style drive sound"6. Guitar Pedal X also pointed to significant demos of the pedal from Rabea, Joss Allen, The Super Fun Awesome Ozzy Guys and Leo Gibson3.

Pete Thorn's demo covers the control layout, the drive modes and the boost section, with examples of the Stack Drive sound and the EQ shaping in use6.

Questions

Is the Boss OD-200 analog or digital?

It is a hybrid. Boss combines analog and digital clipping circuits in one pedal, so the drive character comes from both worlds. Guitar Pedal X also notes it uses Boss MDP, the maker's fourth-generation DSP platform, and all 200 series pedals use 32-bit internal processing.

How much current does the OD-200 need?

It runs on 9V DC with a center negative plug and draws 220mA. That is well beyond a battery or a small daisy chain tap, so plan on a proper isolated or high-current power supply output.

Can the OD-200 run the boost and drive in parallel?

Yes. Boss says the boost circuit can be used in parallel with the main mode, enabling side-by-side blending. Guitar Pedal X's reviewer suggests BROWN drive plus BLUES boost in parallel mode as one useful combination.

Which classic Boss pedals does the OD-200 cover?

Its drive modes include equivalents of classic Boss pedals, such as the OD-1 in the OVERDRIVE mode, and the boost types include the MT-2 Metal Zone as a boost. Ten of the fifteen boost types are the same as the main drive types.

Why do the OD-200 boost settings reset?

Guitar Pedal X found a quirk: when you cycle back to manual mode from a preset, the values you had dialed in on the boost section reset to their defaults. It is worth knowing before you build sounds around a custom boost setting.
