The Boss SDE-3 Dual Digital Delay is a compact stereo delay pedal from Boss that condenses the vintage digital character of the Roland SDE-3000 rackmount delay into a pedalboard-friendly enclosure1. Where a rack unit from the 1980s needed its own space in a flight case, the SDE-3 fits a standard Boss compact footprint, measuring 73 x 59 x 129 mm and weighing 0.45 kg2.

What makes it a "dual" delay is that it runs two parallel delay lines rather than one. Boss's own masterclass article describes it as a pedal that "doubles down on the original Roland SDE-3000 sound with two parallel delay lines"3, letting you dial in everything from clean rhythmic repeats to spaced-out trails. Delay time reaches 1600 ms in mono mode and 800 ms in stereo4.

What it does: two delay lines with an '80s digital voice

The SDE-3's voice is its main draw for players chasing older digital delay sounds. Guitar World's reviewer notes that "it has a distinctive voice, akin to the original 80s DD-2 delay, which also used the same bespoke IC chip as the original SDE-3000"2. In other words, it aims for the warm, slightly colored repeats of 1980s rack digital delay rather than the cleaner, more transparent sound of many modern digital pedals.

The two delay lines can work in several configurations:

  • Basic mono delays, including retro single delays19
  • '80s-style mod/delay combinations, using the onboard modulation19
  • Two stereo modes: discrete left/right delays, and a panning option for ultra-wide sounds that move across the stereo field1
  • Moody textures suited to ambient, chill and lo-fi music, as described in the launch coverage1

Guitar World's reviewer found that stereo mode is where the pedal shows its range, writing that "it's in stereo mode that its true potential is revealed"2.

The controls

The front panel carries eight controls, as listed in Guitar World's review2:

ControlWhat it does
TimeSets the delay time
FeedbackSets how many repeats and how they decay
LevelSets the delay mix level
DepthSets modulation depth
RateSets modulation rate
Hi CutRolls off high frequencies in the repeats
OffsetOffsets the two delay lines against each other
Carryover switchEngages the carryover function

The modulation section, with independent rate and depth knobs, is what enables the '80s-style mod/delay combos1. The Offset knob is central to the dual-delay concept: Guitar Pedal X highlighted the pedal's "smart offset function" as a key feature of the compact design2. An expression pedal can be assigned to the Level, Feedback, and Time knobs for delay mix adjustment, wild pitch effects and dramatic self-oscillation5.

Tap tempo mode is available with a press and hold of the pedal switch1, and the pedal also includes a carryover function, which lets repeats continue ringing when you switch the effect off rather than cutting them dead1108. Optional external footswitches provide on-demand access to tap tempo and a hold function for on-the-fly looping1.

Power and connections

The SDE-3 runs on 9V DC center negative at 75 mA2. Its full connectivity, per Guitar World's review, is:

  • Stereo in and out (inputs and outputs A and B)2
  • Mono in and out (input and output A)2
  • Power input2
  • Control input for an expression pedal or external footswitches2
  • MIDI in2

The MIDI input and control input are unusual features on a compact pedal, and they are part of what separates the SDE-3 from simpler compact delays in Boss's range. Premier Guitar's review noted the "expression pedal control that opens up additional options" as a distinguishing feature811.

The SDE-3 uses buffered bypass, not true bypass2. Like other Boss compact pedals, it keeps a buffer in the signal path at all times, which preserves tone through long chains but differs from the hard-wired bypass some players prefer.

History: the SDE-3000 rack delay in a compact pedal

The SDE-3's lineage goes back to the Roland SDE-3000, a rackmount digital delay from the 1980s that Boss describes as "trendsetting"121. Boss first brought that circuit to pedals in 2023 with the SDE-3000D Dual Digital Delay, a large-format dual delay pedal, followed by the SDE-3000EVH edition developed with Eddie Van Halen's brand3. The SDE-3, announced in September 2024, is the compact version: MusicRadar described it as Boss having "now made its acclaimed dual delay pedal compact"13, and Guitar Pedal X called it "a really cool miniaturisation of the Boss SDE-3000 Dual Digital Delay"14.

The digital delay story at Boss goes back further still. The DD-2 Digital Delay of 1983 was, in Boss's words, "the world's first compact digital delay pedal"15, and GuitarPlayer (www.guitarplayer.com) has described it as "the world's first digital delay in pedal form"16. Guitar World's reviewer connects the SDE-3's voice to that same era, noting the shared IC chip lineage with the original SDE-30002.

What reviewers said

Reception was positive across the press. Guitar World's review concluded: "All in all, on features, sounds, and compact form factor it's hard to fault the SDE-3"2. Pedal of the Day wrote that "the SDE-3 fuses vintage digital character and wide-ranging versatility into one unique and inspiring BOSS compact pedal"9. At the end of 2024, Guitar Pedal X's round-up of the year's best spatial, immersive and time-based effects gave the SDE-3 a Bronze award14.

Questions

Is the Boss SDE-3 true bypass?

No. The SDE-3 uses buffered bypass, as is standard across Boss compact pedals. A buffer keeps the signal strong through long pedalboard chains, though players who prefer a fully passive signal path when the pedal is off will want to know this before buying.

Does the Boss SDE-3 have tap tempo?

Yes. Tap tempo mode is available with a press and hold of the pedal switch, so you can set delay times in time with the music without bending down. Optional external footswitches also provide on-demand access to tap tempo and a hold function for on-the-fly looping.

Is the Boss SDE-3 stereo?

Yes. It has stereo inputs and outputs (A and B) alongside mono operation, with two stereo delay modes: discrete left and right delays, and a panning option for wide sounds that move across the stereo field. Maximum delay time is 800 ms in stereo and 1600 ms in mono.

Can you use an expression pedal with the Boss SDE-3?

Yes. An expression pedal connected to the control input can be used to control the Level, Feedback, and Time knobs, which opens up delay mix adjustment, wild pitch effects and dramatic self-oscillation, all in real time while you play.

Where is the Boss SDE-3 made?

The SDE-3 is made in Malaysia, as reported in Guitar World's review of the pedal. Boss compact pedals have been produced at various facilities over the company's history, and Malaysia is where this model is manufactured.
