Boss SDE-3 Dual Delay

The Boss SDE-3 Dual Delay is a compact stereo digital delay pedal from Boss that condenses the vintage digital character of the Roland SDE-3000 rackmount delay into a pedalboard-friendly box¹. Where the original rack unit was mono, the SDE-3 runs two parallel delay lines, so you get a dual delay in a single compact stompbox². It shipped in the United States in October 2024, priced at $219.99 in the announcement press release, though GuitarPlayer reported it available that September for $219, so the two sources disagree on the exact street figure¹³.

A dual digital delay in stereo or mono

The SDE-3 runs two delay lines in parallel, emulating the tones of not one but two Roland SDE-3000 Digital Delay rack units². In mono it reproduces the SDE-3000's original mono sound, with up to 1600 ms of delay; in stereo each line reaches 800 ms⁶¹⁷.

There are two stereo modes to choose between⁸:

• Discrete stereo: independent left and right delays
• Panning: repeats move across the stereo field for what Guitar.com's news desk called "ultra-wide sounds"⁸

Guitar World's reviewer Alex Lynham found that "it's in stereo mode that its true potential is revealed," and highlighted the stereo delay and doubler features among the pedal's strengths⁴. Bass Magazine's announcement described the tonal range as running "from basic mono delays and '80s-style mod/delay combos to moody textures for ambient, chill, and lo-fi music"¹.

The controls

The front panel carries eight knobs and a switch⁴:

The modulation section gives you independent rate and depth knobs, which is what makes the '80s-style mod/delay combos possible⁶¹. The Offset knob is the pedal's signature control: it shifts the second delay line against the first, which is where the dual-delay rhythms and panning motion come from¹.

Power and connections: MIDI, expression and footswitches

The SDE-3 runs on 9V DC center negative at 75mA⁴. Beyond the audio jacks, it has two control connections:

• TRS MIDI input: syncs the delay time to external MIDI clock signals from DAWs, pedals, and drum machines⁹¹
• Control jack: takes up to two external footswitches or an expression pedal⁹

An expression pedal can be assigned to the Level, Feedback, or Time knob, which Boss describes as useful for delay mix adjustment, wild pitch effects, and dramatic self-oscillation⁹¹. Optional external footswitches give on-demand access to tap tempo and a hold function for on-the-fly looping¹.

Tap tempo itself lives on the main pedal switch: press and hold to enter tap mode⁹¹. Guitar World's reviewer called this "more of a bedroom or studio feature" than a live one, and Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson noted the tap "can seem a little laggy at times"⁴¹⁰.

Based on the Roland SDE-3000 rack delay

The SDE-3 traces back to the Roland SDE-3000, a rackmount digital delay from the 1980s²¹¹¹. Boss's own masterclass article says the pedal "doubles down on the original Roland SDE-3000 sound with two parallel delay lines"². Guitar World's reviewer also heard the family resemblance further back, noting the pedal "has a distinctive voice, akin to the original 80s DD-2 delay, which also used the same bespoke IC chip as the original SDE-3000"⁴. The SDE-3 is the compact member of a small family. Boss released the SDE-3000D and SDE-3000EVH Dual Digital Delays in 2023 as larger twin-pedal units²¹². Compared with the SDE-3, the SDE-3000D offers two full-featured delays with independent parameters, mono/stereo modulation and panning, and delay time ranges of 0 to 1500 ms and 0 to 3000 ms¹³¹⁴. The SDE-3000EVH runs four delays simultaneously across full stereo¹⁵. The SDE-3 trades that depth for a single compact enclosure at a lower price.
