The BOSS SDE-3000D is a dual digital delay pedal from Boss, built as a floor-based reproduction of the Roland SDE-3000 rackmount digital delay from the 1980s12. Where the original rack unit was a single mono delay, the pedal packs two full-featured delays into one wide-format box, each with independent parameters, mono or stereo modulation, and panning23. Boss released it in 2023 alongside the SDE-3000EVH, a sibling model made in collaboration with EVH Gear45.

Guitar World's reviewer Alex Lynham described it as "a relatively faithful emulation of the rack unit in pedal form. As a result it keeps the sounds but improves on the player ergonomics."6

Two digital delays in one pedal

The core idea of the SDE-3000D is that it holds two authentic reproductions of the Roland SDE-3000 in a single pedal2. Each delay runs its own parameters, and the two can be routed in series or in parallel2. Premier Guitar's launch coverage noted the practical gain over the original: while the SDE-3000 was mono, the SDE-3000D provides two discrete delays with series or parallel operation, independent settings, and mono or stereo modulation on each3.

Boss says the pedal delivers the classic warm digital delay sound of the rack unit, with extended features for modern rigs2. The panel itself leans on the original, with a distinctive retro display and controls based on the SDE-30002. Delay time is widely adjustable with two range settings, 0 to 1500 ms and 0 to 3000 ms, matching the 1 to 3000 ms maximum of the rack unit28.

Beyond the two delays, the feature set includes:

  • Characterful modulation inspired by the original circuit design2
  • Phase switches for the primary delay and the delay feedback loop9
  • Adjustable low-cut and high-cut filters for shaping delay feedback sounds2
  • Two inputs and two outputs for dual mono, wet/dry, or stereo setups29

On That Pedal Show, the hosts pointed out one technical distinction from the rack original: the SDE-3000 was a true 12-bit delay, while the pedal uses a simulation of that 12-bit character rather than actual 12-bit processing7.

The controls and footswitches

Three onboard footswitches provide instant control of memory selection, tap tempo, delay hold, momentary effect engagement, and more2. Footswitch functions are assignable, so a player can set the switches up for tap tempo, hold, or other functions2.

For players who want more than the onboard switches, the rear panel carries jacks for extended operation with up to four external footswitches, two expression pedals, or the GA-FC or GA-FC EX foot controller2. GuitarPlayer's launch report described the rear panel as a simple layout of two inputs, two outputs, MIDI, and a pair of jacks for expression pedals or footswitches10.

External footswitch jacksUp to four additional footswitches2
Expression pedal jacksTwo expression pedals2

MIDIMini TRS MIDI I/O2

One thing to know about EQ: on That Pedal Show, the hosts found that the only EQ on the pedal is a single filter button, and it is subtle. One host said he expected more EQ control before realizing that was all there was7.

MIDI

The SDE-3000D does not use 5-pin DIN MIDI ports. Its MIDI I/O sits on space-saving mini TRS jacks2, and Boss's own history of its delay pedals describes the pedal as offering deep MIDI support among its onboard and external control options4. Gearnews flagged the practical consequence at launch: with no DIN-MIDI or USB-MIDI ports, you need additional patch cables or adapters to gain MIDI connectivity11.

If your MIDI controller or switcher uses 5-pin DIN connectors, budget for TRS-to-DIN adapters or special patch cables, since the SDE-3000D's MIDI jacks are mini TRS only211.

History: from the Roland SDE-3000 rack

The SDE-3000D traces back to the Roland SDE-3000, a rack unit introduced in 1983 by Roland, Boss's parent company12131. Delicious Audio notes it was one of the first delays to feature dual delays and a modulation section14. Boss says the rack unit is revered for its beautifully rich sound and distinctive modulation2, and the SDE-3000 found its way into studios and session rigs through the 1980s; Guitar World's reviewer notes it was famously used by studios, session guitarists, and one Edward Van Halen throughout the '80s2.

Boss relaunched the design for its 40th anniversary as two wide-format, feature-laden pedals: the SDE-3000D and the SDE-3000EVH, the latter made in collaboration with EVH Gear5. In Boss's own timeline of its delay pedals, 2023 is the year the SDE-3000D brought two authentic reproductions of the rack unit to a floor-based pedal4. The line continued in 2024 with the compact BOSS SDE-3, which Boss describes as carrying the SDE-3000 legacy to a smaller pedalboard footprint15. Delicious Audio notes the SDE-3000D is almost three times as big as the SDE-314.

The SDE-3000D and the SDE-3000EVH

The two 2023 pedals share the same basic design, but they are not identical. The SDE-3000EVH comes preloaded with the settings of Eddie Van Halen's own Roland SDE-3000 rackmount unit [F5-source]. Pricing differs too: the SDE-3000D listed at $499 and the SDE-3000EVH at $599 in the U.S. at launch3, and Guitar World's review of the EVH model frames the choice in terms of "the differences that the extra $100 investment provides"16. On That Pedal Show, the hosts also noted that the EVH model gives you wet/dry/wet, which the SDE-3000D does not7.

What reviewers said

Reviews of the SDE-3000D and its siblings have been positive, with some caveats. Guitar.com's reviewer called it "a superb bit of kit, but it's not cheap"17. Gearnews took a different angle on the price, judging $499 reasonable when vintage Roland SDE-3000 units come up for anywhere between $200 and $80011. Premier Guitar's review of the SDE-3, the compact sibling, described the family as "a texture machine, bubbling with subtle-to-odd triangle LFO modulations and enhanced dual-delay patterns that make tone mazes from dopey-simple melodies."18

On That Pedal Show's comparison of Boss's big-box delay pedals, the hosts were direct about where the SDE-3000D fits among the DD-500, the DM-101, and the RE-202: asked which pedal to buy for the sound of 1980s digital delay specifically, the answer was the SDE-3000D, while the DD-500 got the nod as the all-rounder7. On the sound itself, one host said Boss "have done has gone to the nth degree with this new engine technology they've got and it really is a really spectacular sounding thing"7.

That Pedal Show's video walks through each of Boss's large-format delay pedals, comparing the SDE-3000D's 80s digital character against the DD-500's flexibility, the DM-101's analog BBD delays, and the RE-202's tape echo modeling, including a segment on choosing between the SDE-3000D and the DD-500 in dual mode19. The SDE-3000D also appeared in the channel's earlier digital delay comparison alongside pedals from Meris, Strymon, Line 6, OTO, and Keeley20.

Boss has kept the pedal's software current since launch, with system updates issued through 202321.

Questions

What is the difference between the SDE-3000D and the SDE-3000EVH?

Both are dual digital delays based on the Roland SDE-3000, released together in 2023. The SDE-3000EVH was made in collaboration with EVH Gear and comes preloaded with settings from Eddie Van Halen's own Roland SDE-3000 rack unit, and it lists for $100 more at $599 versus $499 for the SDE-3000D. On That Pedal Show, the hosts also noted the EVH model adds a wet/dry/wet option.

Does the SDE-3000D have 5-pin MIDI?

No. The SDE-3000D carries its MIDI I/O on space-saving mini TRS jacks rather than 5-pin DIN ports, and there is no USB-MIDI port either. Gearnews noted when the pedal launched that you need additional patch cables or adapters to connect standard MIDI gear to it.

How long is the delay time on the SDE-3000D?

Delay time is widely adjustable with two range settings: 0 to 1500 ms and 0 to 3000 ms. That matches the 1 to 3000 ms maximum of the original Roland SDE-3000 rack unit, and each of the pedal's two delays has its own independent parameters.

How many presets does the SDE-3000D store?

The SDE-3000D saves and recalls sounds with 100 memories. Boss describes these as memories for storing custom setups, covering the settings of both delays along with their modulation and routing options.

How much power does the SDE-3000D need?

It runs on 9V DC with a center-negative plug, drawing less than 500 mA. That is more than a standard 100 mA output on many pedalboard power supplies, so plan for a higher-current output rather than a typical analog pedal supply slot.

Is the Boss SDE-3000D a reissue of the Roland rack unit?

It is a floor-based reproduction rather than a literal reissue. Boss describes it as a faithful reproduction of the Roland SDE-3000 rackmount digital delay from the 1980s, and Guitar World's reviewer called it a reissue of the rack SDE-3000 in pedal form. One difference: the original was a 12-bit delay, while the pedal uses a simulation of that 12-bit sound.
