The Collision Devices Crushturnal is a multi-effects pedal from the French builder Collision Devices, announced in May 2024. It combines four things in one box: a digital delay, a shimmer reverb, a sample reducer (a bitcrusher) and a clock sequencer. Collision Devices describes it as a pedal that "delays, reverberates, destroys, microloops, shifts the pitch or harmonizes your signal, and much more"12.

The idea behind it comes from a specific kind of digital failure. As the maker puts it, the Crushturnal "takes it inspiration from the glitch created by clock change on digital processors"1. Rather than treating that glitch as a fault, the pedal makes it a controllable effect, driven by a sequencer that can speed up, slow down or randomize what the delay and crusher are doing.

The three sections: ambience, digital repeater and sequencer

The pedal is organized into three parts, each with its own footswitch: an ambience (shimmer reverb), a digital repeater (delay plus crusher) and a sequencer12.

SectionControlsWhat it does
Ambience (Shimmer Reverb)Filter (Brightness)Sets the brightness of the reverb tail2
Digital Repeater (Delay + Crusher)Time (intervals), Feedback (repeats), Sample RateSets delay time, repeat count and bitcrusher sample rate2
SequencerMode, Rate (2 to 5 ms), Tap Tempo on the footswitch (hold = tap)Drives the clock as a multiplier or divider through step patterns2

The sequencer is what separates the Crushturnal from a straightforward delay and reverb pedal. Its Mode knob selects how the clock moves through its patterns, acting as a clock multiplier or divider. The available modes are Up 2 Steps, Up 3 Steps, Up 4 Steps, Up Infinite, Down 2 Steps, Down 3 Steps, Down 4 Steps, Down Infinite, Up Down 4 Steps, Up Down Infinite and Random Pattern2. In practice, the sequencer steps the clock through those patterns, which changes how the delay and the crusher behave over time, from steady ramps to random jumps.

Guitar Pedal X's Stefan Karlsson reviewed the pedal at launch and found a lot to like in what those sections produce together2:

"It's quite evident that this pedal is capable of some really beautiful and distinct ethereal / celestial tones and textures"2

Collision Devices describes the Crushturnal as a "DIGITAL DELAY - REVERB - SAMPLE REDUCER - CLOCK SEQUENCER"4. Its three footswitches split those functions into sections: Sequencer, Digital Repeater (Delay + Crusher), and Ambience (Shimmer Reverb)2. A reviewer found the pedal "capable of some really beautiful and distinct ethereal / celestial tones and textures", with the effects together sounding "quite superb" overall2.

Power and connections

The Crushturnal runs on 9V DC with a negative center plug and a maximum current draw of 500mA2. That draw is high for a compact pedal, so it needs a proper power supply rather than sharing a small daisy chain with a handful of analog stomps.

At 500mA maximum, the Crushturnal should be run from an isolated output rated for it. Check your power supply's per-output current rating before plugging in.

Connections on the rear panel cover audio and control. Input impedance is 1 MΩ and output impedance is 100 KΩ2.

  • Input: 1 MΩ input impedance2
  • Output: 100 KΩ output impedance2
  • EXP / CV In: controls the clock2
  • CV Out: sends control voltage out to other gear2
  • Sync: external synchronization2

The EXP / CV In jack is the pedal's route to external control: an expression pedal or a control voltage source can drive the clock, which in turn moves the delay and crusher. The CV Out jack works the other way, letting the Crushturnal clock other gear. The sequencer can also be synced to a tap tempo or an external signal14.

Crushturnal and Nocturnal

The Crushturnal shares its control layout with Collision Devices' Nocturnal pedal3. Where the Nocturnal's three footswitches carry its own three sections, the Crushturnal keeps the same three-footswitch, three-section format but fills it with a sequencer, a digital repeater combining delay and a bitcrusher, and a shimmer reverb ambience section2.

Versions and availability

The standard Crushturnal comes in a black finish1. Beyond it, Collision Devices has released a series of limited editions, each restricted to a single unit:

  • Coldcrush LTD: sold out4
  • Mirror Polished LTD5
  • Pink knobs LTD: anodized finish with pink knobs, limited to a single unit6

The maker has also sold a B-Stock unit at €299.00 against an original price of €332.50, described as sounding the same as the new product but with minor visual imperfections7. At launch in May 2024 the pedal was priced at $390 RRP, €332.50 + tax or £299 + tax21; the maker's current page lists €332.501.

For US and UK customers, Collision Devices ships from hubs in those countries to avoid extra import fees, and VAT is calculated at checkout for European customers6.

Questions

Is the Crushturnal stereo?

No. The Crushturnal is mono in and mono out, with an all analog dry signal path. The wet effects are digital, but the pedal has a single input and a single output, so it is not a stereo delay or reverb.

Does the Crushturnal have tap tempo?

Yes. The clock sequencer can be synced to a tap tempo or an external signal. Tapping is done on the Sequencer footswitch, and holding that footswitch acts as the tap control, with the Rate knob covering intervals of 2 to 5 ms.

What is the difference between the Crushturnal and the Nocturnal?

The two pedals share the same control layout, but they are different circuits. The Nocturnal is a shimmer reverb, modulated delay and dynamic tremolo pedal, while the Crushturnal is a digital delay, reverb, sample reducer (bitcrusher) and clock sequencer built around the glitch created by clock changes on digital processors.

Can the Crushturnal be controlled with CV?

Yes. The rear panel has an EXP / CV In jack to control the clock, plus a CV Out jack, so the pedal can both receive control voltage and send it to other gear. There is also a Sync port for external synchronization.
