The Dunlop Authentic Hendrix '69 Psych Series Fuzz Face Distortion (JHW1) is a fuzz/distortion pedal in a mini enclosure. It sits alongside the other Psych Series minis, such as the Dunlop Authentic Hendrix '69 Psych Series Octavio Fuzz (JHW2) and the Dunlop Authentic Hendrix '69 Psych Series Band Of Gypsys Fuzz (JHW4), and with the wider family of fuzz pedals on the site1.
What it does
The JHW1 is built around the two Fuzz Face Distortion sounds associated with Hendrix: an aggressive silicon-based crunch and a smoother second flavor, per Guitar World's announcement1. For a player, that means one small pedal that can cover both the biting, gated fuzz character silicon transistors are known for and the rounder side of the Fuzz Face design, without swapping between two full-size units.
Unlike the vintage Fuzz Face pedals it draws on, the JHW1 adds what Guitar World calls "modern appointments such as a status LED, true-bypass switching and a 9-volt power jack"1. True bypass means the pedal is out of the signal path when off, and the 9-volt jack means it can run from a standard pedalboard power supply rather than relying on a battery alone.
On the board
The mini MXR housing is the practical selling point: it takes up little room on a crowded board, which is how Dunlop has approached its whole line of Hendrix Fuzz Face minis, including the Dunlop FFM3 Jimi Hendrix Mini Fuzz Face Distortion and the Dunlop Authentic Hendrix '69 Fuzz Face Mini1. Guitar Pedal X included the JHW1 in its 2022 selection of mini fuzz pedals, listing it at $1302.
