The Dunlop JC95IWB Jerry Cantrell I Want Blood Cry Baby Wah is a wah pedal in Dunlop's long line of Cry Baby signature models, sitting alongside pedals like the Jerry Cantrell Cry Baby and the Jerry Cantrell Firefly Cry Baby Wah. Like every Cry Baby, it is worked with the foot: rock the pedal back and forth and the filter sweeps through its range. Dunlop's manual describes the result as "the vocal, expressive tones that the Cry Baby Wah is famous for"1.
Controls and how it works
The pedal has one control on top of the standard rocker action:
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Rocker pedal | Sweeps the wah filter; push the toe down until you feel a "click" to turn the pedal on/off1 |
| FINE TUNE knob | Adjusts tone of the toe-down rocker position1 |
The FINE TUNE knob is the feature that sets this model apart from a plain Cry Baby. Dunlop's manual explains: "Rotate the FINE TUNE knob clockwise for a brighter toe-down response or counterclockwise for a darker toe-down response." In practice, that means you can dial in where the top of the sweep sits before you play a note, which is handy if your amp or pickups make the toe-down position too shrill or too dull1.
Filter range and signal levels
The manual gives the filter's center frequency at three points in the sweep, and the Fine Tune knob's effect shows up clearly in the toe-down figures1:
| Position | Filter center frequency |
|---|---|
| Heel Down | 320 Hz to 390 Hz1 |
| Toe Down, Fine Tune Min | 1050 kHz to 1270 Hz1 |
| Toe Down, Fine Tune Max | 1700 Hz to 2070 Hz1 |
So turning Fine Tune clockwise moves the toe-down center from roughly 1050 to 1270 up to 1700 to 2070, a noticeably brighter top to the sweep1.
Signal levels and noise, measured at VREF=1VRMS, A-weighted:
| Measurement | Heel Down | Toe Down |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum gain at center frequency | +18 dBV1 | +20 dBV1 |
| Noise floor | >97 dB1 | >89 dB1 |
| Maximum input level | -11.5 dBV1 | |
| Maximum output level | +6 dBV1 |
Power and connections
The JC95IWB runs on DC 9 volts and draws 1 mA1. Dunlop specifies the ECB003 9-volt adapter, or an MXR Brick Series power supply1. It can also run on one 9-volt battery, accessed via the underside of the pedal1.
The bypass type is Hardwire, not true bypass1. If your pedalboard or bypass looper depends on true bypass switching throughout, this is the specification to check against the rest of your chain.
Hooking it up takes two cables: run a cable from your guitar to the pedal's INSTRUMENT jack, then another from the AMPLIFIER jack to your amplifier1. To turn the effect on and off, push the toe of the pedal down until you feel a click1.
