The Electro-Harmonix 1440 Stereo Looper is a looping pedal that records 1440 seconds, or 24 minutes, of uncompressed 24-bit/44.1kHz stereo audio, with an unlimited number of overdubs1. Following EHX's tradition of naming its loopers after the number of seconds of looping time they provide, the 1440 sits in the middle of the company's looper range: more capable than the simpler 360 and 720, less complex than the 22500 and 450002. Premier Guitar's reviewer described where it fits: "the compact 1440 inhabits a sweet spot between those worlds"2.

Electro-Harmonix makes the 1440, and it is available now13.

What it does: 24 minutes of stereo looping

The core job is simple: record a phrase, layer overdubs over it, and play it back in stereo. The 1440 offers 1440 seconds of high-quality, uncompressed stereo recording time, twice as much as the 7204, with unlimited overdubbing4. Premier Guitar's reviewer noted that "at 1440 seconds, or up to 24 minutes, there's a load of looping time to work with"2.

The pedal stores 20 different loops1, which you select with the Mode knob before recording1. Audio is uncompressed 24-bit/44.1kHz stereo3, and Guitar World's reviewer found the sound quality pristine1.

Two onboard effects shape playback6:

  • Reverse: plays the loop backwards1
  • Octave: drops a loop to half-speed and an octave lower1

Delicious Audio described these as "Reverse and Octave speed effects for extra creative options"4. There is also a 1 Shot playback mode and an adjustable loop fadeout time1.

The controls

Electro-Harmonix kept the front panel minimal: two footswitches, loop and stop3. Guitar World's reviewer explained how the Loop footswitch works: "you use the Loop footswitch to carry out recording, overdubbing and playback. A two-second press will do the job if you want to undo or redo a layer, while a double tap stops playback"1.

The second footswitch is always available to erase loops when held down, and its default use is to stop playback. It can be set to retrigger loops from the start or to bring in the Reverse or Octave effects1. MusicRadar lists it as selectable for Stop, Reverse/Octave Effects, or Loop Retrigger7.

ControlWhat it does
LevelSets output level1
TempoChanges the speed and pitch of a loop, from 60bpm to 240bpm around the 120bpm default1
OverdubSets how quiet the previously recorded layer gets with each loop cycle1
ModeSelects a loop number and settings1
Reverse buttonEngages the reverse effect1
Octave buttonEngages the octave effect1
1 Shot buttonOne-shot playback mode1
Ext Clock buttonEngages external clock sync1
Loop footswitchRecords, overdubs and plays back; two-second press undoes or redoes a layer1
Stop footswitchStops playback by default; held down it erases loops; can be set for retrigger or effects1

The Tempo control can work two ways. Premier Guitar's reviewer described a tempo switch "settable for bpm-regulated adjustments (fine mode) or for half-step adjustments (coarse mode)"2.

The looping order itself is programmable: REC/PLAY/DUB or REC/DUB/PLAY7.

Power and connections

The 1440 runs on a supplied 9V DC adaptor at 200mA1. MusicRadar notes it comes equipped with a standard EHX 9.6DC200mA power supply7, which gearnews listed as included with the $221.30 RRP at launch5.

Connections are standard inputs (L/Mono, R) and standard outputs (L/Mono, R), plus FC, MIDI and USB1. The pedal comes equipped with a standard EHX 9.6DC200mA power supply7, and the US list price of $221.30 includes that supply5.

The 1440 uses buffered bypass rather than true bypass1, worth knowing if you run it in a chain with other pedals and prefer a true-bypass signal path when the looper is idle.

Part of the EHX looper family

The 1440 is part of EHX's family of loopers alongside the 360, 720, 22500 and 450002. It evolved from the 720 Looper, released five years earlier, in 20157.

The main difference from the 720 is recording time: the 1440 offers twice as much, 1440 seconds against the 720's 720 seconds (12 minutes)48. The 720 stores 10 independent loops with unlimited overdubbing8, while the 1440 stores 201 and adds MIDI clock sync1. Delicious Audio called the 1440 "a rather affordable Midi enhanced looper"4.

Hosted in a case slightly bigger than EHX's compact format4, the 1440 measures 105 (w) x 120 (d) x 55mm (h)1.

Questions

Is the EHX 1440 true bypass?

No. The 1440 Stereo Looper uses buffered bypass, not true bypass. Guitar World's review lists it among the pedal's features as buffered bypass, alongside its 20 loop memories and 24 minutes of audio.

Can the 1440 Stereo Looper sync to MIDI clock?

Yes. The 1440 can be synchronized to an external MIDI clock, which lets it follow the tempo of other MIDI gear. It also has a USB connection and works with the 1440 Loop Manager app for managing loops.

How many loops can the EHX 1440 store?

The 1440 can store 20 different loops. You select a loop number with the Mode knob before recording, and each memory can hold part of the 24 minutes of total recording time.

Does the 1440 Looper have undo and redo?

Yes. Holding the Loop footswitch for about two seconds undoes or redoes a layer. An external footswitch can also be connected to the FC jack to access the undo and redo function.

Is the Electro-Harmonix 1440 discontinued?

Yes. Electro-Harmonix released the 1440 Stereo Looper in 2020 and lists it as discontinued in 2025. It may still be found secondhand or from remaining retailer stock.

What is the difference between the EHX 720 and 1440?

The 1440 offers twice the recording time of the 720: 1440 seconds (24 minutes) against the 720's 720 seconds (12 minutes). The 720 stores 10 independent loops, while the 1440 stores 20, and the 1440 adds MIDI clock sync.
