The Fractal Audio AX8 is an all-in-one amp modeler and multi-effects pedalboard processor: a floor unit that carries the same core Quantum modeling engine as Fractal's flagship rack unit, the Axe-Fx II, with over 222 Quantum amp models on board12. Where Fractal's earlier FX8 floor processor supplied effects for players using conventional amps, the AX8 adds the amps and cabs, aimed at players who connect straight to a PA or power amp3. Premier Guitar called it the company's first "all-in-one" unit2.

Fractal describes the playing experience in its own words: in your hands, it "sounds and responds like a great tube amp, with an organic, 'juicy' quality often described as very 'musical'"1. The unit has now reached end of life, but its firmware is upgradeable and owners received many updates over its run, including a recent one with improvements borrowed from the Axe-Fx III1.

The AX8 is discontinued. Fractal Audio states the unit has reached end of life, though firmware remains upgradeable and owners enjoyed a long run of updates1.

What the AX8 does

The AX8 packages Fractal's amp and effects modeling in a floor pedalboard controller, built into a signature black steel chassis with aircraft aluminum end-panels and a top handle/guard15. Guitar World described it as "packaged in a powerful, industrial-strength floor pedalboard controller"6. Bass Gear Magazine grouped it with the Line 6 Helix as the two floor-based flagship models that do both amp and effect modeling5.

It runs on eleven solid-state stomp switches with no mechanical contacts to fail: eight main footswitches for instant-access effect switching plus three assignable "Function" footswitches1. The switches numbered one to eight can select the preset in a bank, switch individual effects in a preset, or call up the eight scenes every preset can hold3.

Amps, cabs and effects on board

The model counts come from Fractal's product page1:

  • Over 222 Quantum amp models, the same modeling technology as the Axe-Fx II
  • 130+ "Factory" cabs, plus 512 "User Cab" memory slots for entries from Fractal's Cab Packs
  • 29+ Drive Pedal models
  • 19 Reverb types
  • 7 Filter types
  • 4 Compressor types

There are 512 preset memory slots, each laid out on Fractal's "4x12" grid with eight easy-access scenes1, a figure Premier Guitar confirms2. A maker demo video by Cooper Carter and Matt Picone shows the range in practice: for a layered "Jedi guitar orchestra" piece, all backing parts used the Class-A 30W TB amp with many different cabs, including Top Boost BLUE and Top Boost SILVER, alongside a 3-Knob Drive model, tempo-matched multidelays and stereo tape delay7.

Power and connections

The AX8 is built as an industrial-strength floor pedalboard controller rather than a compact stompbox6. Its signature black steel chassis, aircraft aluminum end-panels and top handle/guard are made for stage use, and it is a mains-powered floor unit rather than a battery-driven pedal.

ConnectionDetail
Instrument input1/4" with Fractal's "Secret Sauce" circuitry1
Effects loopStereo in / stereo out, repurposable as a utility input or output1
Main outputsStereo, with XLR, 1/4" Humbuster and S/PDIF1
External controlJacks for four external switches or expression pedals1
MIDI5-pin MIDI in5

The stereo outputs let the AX8 send a cab-simulated signal to front of house while simultaneously feeding a power amp and conventional guitar speakers1. Premier Guitar summed up the connectivity as comprehensive, with 1/4", XLR and S/PDIF outputs2.

How it differs from the Axe-Fx II

MusicRadar notes the AX8 features the same core modeling engine as the Axe-Fx II for identical sound quality3. The difference Fractal itself draws is block count: you get one dual-XY-channel amp block per preset instead of the two in the rack unit1. One spec-sheet comparison also lists the AX8 as lacking the multidelay X/Y switching found elsewhere in the family8. In short: same sounds, fewer simultaneous blocks, floor format instead of rack.

MIDI control

The AX8's factory default MIDI CC settings are documented for the unit8. Selected assignments:

CC numberFunction
23External 88
24External 98
27External 128
110Flanger X/Y8
112Phaser X/Y8

What reviewers said

The AX8 collected strong verdicts across the press. Guitar World gave it a Platinum Award in 20176. Premier Guitar's reviewer called it "a landmark product release. The sounds are stellar," with top-notch construction and ergonomics, judging it a bargain at $1,2992. MusicPlayers.com's reviewers wrote that "playing the Fractal Audio AX8 felt like playing a real amp in the studio"4. MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen concluded: "Solid build. Good price. Loads of sounds," finding very few reasons to avoid it overall3.

"AX8 is a landmark product release. The sounds are stellar."
Premier Guitar2

On price and support, MusicPlayers.com listed the AX8 at $1,099 with a one-year warranty4. Fractal's downloads page carries the AX8 Owner's Manual (Version 6, dated December 19, 2016) and a Factory Presets zip archive dated June 5, 20179.
