The Fractal Audio FX8 is a multi-effects pedalboard: a floor unit that takes the effects from the company's Axe-Fx II rack processor and puts them into a stompbox-style working format. As MusicRadar's reviewer Trevor Curwen described it, the concept was "taking just the effects from the Axe-FX II and putting them into a floor unit that has a basic working format of a pedalboard"1. It runs up to eight simultaneous effects using the algorithms made famous in the Axe-Fx II line2.
The FX8 was most recently available in Mark II guise but has since been discontinued3. Fractal Audio's current compact multi-effects offering is the VP4.
Eight effects from the Axe-Fx II
The FX8 is effects-only: it does not model amplifiers. Its job is to replace a pedalboard of individual boxes with one unit running eight effects at once, drawn from the same algorithms as the Axe-Fx II24. Each effect type lives in a block, and the blocks cover a lot of ground:
- The DRIVE block includes simulations of 34+ different fuzz, overdrive, distortion and boost pedals2. MusicRadar's review of the original noted the Drive block "offers 33 options including modelled Tube Screamer, Fuzz Face, RAT and more"1.
- The DELAY block offers types for analog, digital, tape, and more2.
Fractal Audio says the signal path is built to deliver ultra-low noise and pristine sound quality, and the unit is designed for unity gain with true bypass, so it leaves your tone alone when the effects are off2.
The controls and footswitches
Editing and navigation are handled by five knobs beneath a bright display24. The footswitches are the working surface: eleven of them, all solid state with no mechanical contacts to fail, which Fractal Audio describes as quiet and durable24.
MusicRadar's review breaks down how they are laid out5:
- Footswitches one to eight switch the eight effects.
- A further three footswitches handle multiple functions. Two of them select the preset banks but also call up the onboard tuner, operate tap tempo or turn on the unit's looper.
- The switches sit in two tiers, so you can easily hit the right one without a problem1.
The 128 preset memories are organized in banks of eight, matching the eight main footswitches, so each bank behaves like a pedalboard of eight effects you can switch individually21.
Connections: MIDI, USB and expression jacks
The rear panel carries two switch/expression pedal jacks, USB, MIDI and more24. The MIDI implementation is bidirectional: the FX8 can control or respond to other MIDI gear in your rig through its MIDI IN and OUT/THRU ports2. That makes it a candidate for running as the master controller of a larger rig, or for being commanded by another controller.
For players who want to integrate it with a traditional amplifier, the FX8 supports the optional four cable method. Using that setup, you can place each effect PRE, between guitar and amp where pedals go, or POST, in the amp's effects loop2. The practical benefit is the classic split: drives and compression in front of the amp, delays and reverbs after the preamp, all from one unit. There are also dual TRS relays for amp switching, so preset changes can also switch channels on a compatible amp2.
Where it came from
Fractal Audio Systems announced the FX8 in October 2014, with shipping expected to begin in Q4 20144. The announcement pitched it exactly as it turned out: a floor unit running up to eight simultaneous effects with Axe-Fx II algorithms, 128 onboard preset memories, eleven solid state footswitches and five knobs beneath a bright display4.
The Mark II revision that followed changed the cosmetics, with an all-black aircraft aluminum bezel and end panels, while keeping the same effects engine2. The hardware itself is built for the road: a rugged steel chassis with aircraft aluminum end-panels and a convenient top handle2. MusicRadar's review of the original described the chassis as "practically sized with a sloped top"1.
Firmware and support
Fractal Audio's downloads page hosts the FX8 Owner's Manual, a PDF dated November 14, 2016, and a manual covering both the original FX8 and the FX8 Mark II, updated for firmware versions 3.0 or newer6. The final firmware release was version 5.04, a zip archive dated November 14, 2017, which the maker provides as an unsupported beta6. With the unit discontinued, that beta is where official firmware support ends36.
What reviewers said
MusicRadar's Trevor Curwen reviewed the original FX8 and was unqualified in his verdict1:
"There are no compromises here: this is the most comprehensive and best-sounding all-in-one effects processor you can currently buy"1
MusicRadar, overall verdict1
Writing in Guitar World in 2026, Curwen noted the FX8 "was most recently available in the MKII guise but has since been discontinued," placing it in the history of Fractal's floor units rather than the current lineup3. Players looking for a current Fractal floor unit in a similar spirit can read about the VP4, or browse the wider field on the multi-effects page.

Questions
What is new in the Fractal Audio FX8 Mark II compared with the original?
The Mark II keeps the same effects engine and feature set but changes the cosmetics: an all-black aircraft aluminum bezel and end panels in place of the original's finish. Fractal Audio's owner's manual covers both the original FX8 and the Mark II in one document, updated for firmware versions 3.0 or newer, so the two versions operate the same way.
How many presets does the FX8 hold?
The unit stores 128 onboard preset memories, which Fractal Audio describes as 128 totally different pedalboards. MusicRadar's review notes these are organized in banks of eight, so you step through them bank by bank from the footswitches rather than scrolling through one long list.
Does the FX8 have MIDI?
Yes. It has MIDI IN and OUT/THRU ports, so it can control or respond to other MIDI gear in your rig. It also connects over USB, which Fractal Audio lists alongside MIDI among its connectivity options, and has two switch/expression pedal jacks.
Can the FX8 be used with bass?
Fractal Audio does not market the FX8 specifically for bass, and the published material on the unit does not address bass use directly. Its effects blocks, including drive, delay and more, are guitar-oriented, but nothing in the maker's description restricts it to guitar.
What does the four cable method mean on the FX8?
Using the optional four cable setup, you connect the FX8 to your amp so that each effect can be placed PRE, between guitar and amp where pedals normally go, or POST, in the amp's effects loop. This lets you put drives and compression in front of the amp while delays and reverbs sit after its preamp, all from one unit.
Is the FX8 firmware officially supported?
The final firmware release was version 5.04, dated November 14, 2017, which Fractal Audio provides as an unsupported beta. The unit itself has since been discontinued, so there is no further official firmware development.
